thanks for the update but could you consider some status page for users to refer to in cases like this - like redirect them somewhere cos right now i had to search google then other post on here and only then i found the link to your official post.
cheers!

I'd like to thank eduffield and the other developers for this critically important evolution in virtual currency. DarkCoin is what bitcoin should have been. Some might call it "Bitcoin 2.0" but would do better by saying: "DarkCoin is digital cash."  -  Child Harold - February 28, 2014

Been a while now.  Cloudflare doesn't help, it just makes it impossible to check if it's down with sites like downorisitjustme because cloudflare makes it look like it's up.

You should also consider using Twitter for situations like this.

A short status there will calm a lot of people.

Maybe we shouldn't all hate on Gox so much. Given they handle ~10x the volume of number two their down time is not that bad. And so far they haven't stolen or lost our money.  Undecided

And now a contradictory twitter update:

"We are under attack. Will be back as soon as possible."

Maybe it's an attack but not a DDoS. In that case it's not contradictory.

Is there such thing as a reliable bitcoin exchange?

UPDATE: Our peliminary result shows we are not currently suffering a DDoS attack. We are still investigating the exact cause of the unscheduled service outage and we will update you when we have more information.

Yep, everything seems to be in order. At first I was a little scared that they might have been hacked, but then I understood that Bitstamp should be able to cover their losses even if the hot wallet is breached some day.

Speaking of security, I recently enabled two-factor authentication for my account. While it works well, it was disappointing that withdrawals can still be made freely after logging in. I wish there was a way to make withdrawals require the 2-factor authentication code. It's always best to use a separate, high-security computer when dealing with large amounts of money. However, every little bit helps, and this extra authentication requirement should be easy to implement.
