UP plz correct me if I'm wrong here. I might have missed a few things earlier on in the registration process...

I wan't to give my perspective on the matter as well because I wasn't involved when NEM started but I am now especially with the taint analysis and the stakeholderlist.
First I want to say to so far NOONE has been kicked from the list because of sockpuppeting. That's what the audition is for which is still ongoing but I think it'll be finished by next week.
I also want to point out that noone will be kicked willy-nilly. Every one will  be given time to make their case. Additional to that we're only weeding out people with more than 5 stakes which is imho already generous. Also we're only refunding additional stakes. This means that people are not even being kicked out of the movement they just get their money back for additional stakes and receive only one stake (plus the sockpuppets we didn't find ) so I don't think we're stopped attracting newbies by kicking out sockpuppets.
I can't comment on the retrospective part because I was under the impression that the disclaimer about the dev team to refund if they feel someone is being unfair has been there from day one.
All in all I think the process is very fair. It has absolutely not been ideal and some people may get out of it with a bad feeling but in the end we're going to have a community where everyone has relatively the same amount of NEM and that was the goal. Rule changes or not that's what matters imho.

If you'd like to discuss this further I think we might wan't to move it somewhere else since this thread is currently still the main source for updates and it turns people off. We can totally keep it public I just think this thread might not be the right place anymore.

patmast3r, thanks for not dismissing me as a simple troll deserving of insults and nothing else! I agree with nearly everything you say, and I can obviously see that NEM is trying to be fair, and I appreciate utopianfuture's efforts.

Thanks also for the offer to continue this discussion elsewhere, but I've had my say, and I'm over the sockpuppet issue.

I will say that the original NEM post was edited & changed so many times, so when exactly the 'disclaimer' was included I'm not sure. I do know it wasn't there in the original post, and my belief is it was included sometime between the 26th & 29th  of January.


I believe UP started to appreciate the sockpuppet problem when he wrote this on 26 Jan

So I saw an attempt to accumulate NEM stakes by one person making 5 accounts in the same manner https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic ... msg4750698 which somewhat goes against our egalitarian principle so my first instinct is to refund him the money and allow the sockpuppet only one stake.

But I realized it is explicitly said in the front page that multiple buy-ins are allowed. So I added a qualification in the front page "the development team reserve the right to refund you the money if an effort to unfairly accumulate NEM stakes is discovered"; however this qualification is added retrospectively so I think I would have to let Mr. sockpuppet to keep all of his 5 stakes if he wants to.

I want the community input for this decision.

Either way, there was a grey period when sockpuppets were allowed. There are a whole bunch of UP posts where he's talking about why sockpuppets should be considered ok, but they've all been disowned, and replaced with the 'but now we have new DNA profiling type tech so sockpuppets have ALWAYS been fraudulent .....", which is the type of spin I'm disappointed by.

Utopianfuture should be above that sort of stuff, "read my lips, I did not condone sockpuppet relations with that woman ... NEM Lewinsky".

I also have to stress that i think the key isn't in just distribution or the fear of dumping, but also in making sure we have ACTIVE stakeholders who are prepared to donate a portion of their NEM to community promotions and other initiatives.

This is the big problem with NXT right now. In order for the idea to succeed in such a competitive market, it'll take community effort to make NEM stand out. This also means, imo, getting NEM to have some presence on the deep web as well as more legit retailers.

I will be donating NEM for a forging system that runs on the Raspberry Pi, waiting for some NEM and waiting for that RPi bounty to be listed.

Funfact: NEM will probably note use the term forging as it is connected to POS and NXT. If you read some of my posts I already used the word foraging (i guess people thought it's a typo)

That's one measure. Unfortunately for you, we do have some more new measures such as taint analysis + activity analysis to detect people with many accounts. I would consider applying them retrospectively is similar to applying DNA testing to samples from raping cases occurred before the invention of DNA testing. In both instances, they are quite useful, don't you think ?

No ETA on updated to the dev plan but I'm not sure there'll be one because I don't think it's necessary. Alpha is due sometime in april (If I remember correctly) and there'll be a whitepaper for POI.
