Way too many people using this service now.  Leased work finishes way too fast for it to be viable as a primary income source, unlike how it used to be

 Roll Eyes

There are two types of users: purchasers and miners.  I need to know which you are to fully understand your statement.

Either way, you just need more purchasers so that the hashing power is leased more often and split between more purchasers.  So, there are not enough people using this service Tongue.

Yeah, I'm talking from the mining point of view.

The amount of purchasers is way too thinned out I believe.  I'm sure quite a few people that apply check only the purchase option to get accepted faster but then decided only to mine  Tongue

If I follow you correctly, People can sign up as purchasers then never purchase but only mine?
If that is the case then I hope their applications didn't get to hop over people honest enough to let pirate know they just wanted to mine.

Has pirate made any progress on trying to get leased work for other applications beside bitcoin mining?

I really believe gpumax would take off if there was leased work for things like rendering, password cracking, scientific research, etc. it would also help people with large farms hedge if bitcoin ever had any issues.

I totally agree, those options seem like they would have so much potential as there is a wide range of industries that could utilize the hashing power. Ideally to have some type of secure API that a customer could plug into to get work in and out. It would future proof GPUMAX for bitcoin and beyond. It would be a hell of a lot easier to secure funding too. Right now they read your business proposal and are like bitcoin what??

That "secure API" would be very difficult to design.  GPUs can upload code to CPUs and hijack the OS.  Don't keep any wallet.dat's on your hashing machines.  If you're talking about just performing various hash functions, that might work, but generic computation is a can of worms I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole.

Any thoughts on what other fields would benefit from brute forcing numbers through 2 rounds of SHA256?  Realistically that's what we're all doing, and that's all our miner hardware software is designed to do.

I assumed they meant utilizing GPUs, because if you're talking about custom mining hardware then it's probably pointless.  Although, I suppose a system could be set up where bitstreams for FPGAs could be sent out.  You would only have a limited list of supported FPGAs, but that could work.

I was half-heartedly being facetious.  What they're suggesting would be (IMO) a logistics nightmare.

Well none of my rigs have wallets, not sure why anyone would put a bitcoin client on their mining rig.

I don't claim to understand how it would work, I just seem to remember pirate suggesting this was a possibility when he first started this.

Video rendering is certainly an application which would be applicable. Especially for 5970's or other cards with 2GB of ram or more.

Some people have mining cards in their desktop systems.  But yeah, there is no reason to have one on a dedicated system unless your mining p2pool, and then you can just have an empty one.

So is there any reason for concern if I have a Bitcoin wallet on my desktop (which is mining)?

No... we were talking about a hypothetical system where people sell generic GPU power.  That would be a security nightmare, but you're fine with mining software (as long as you don't download some shady guy's SuperSpeedHashAmplifier(TM) that is really a wallet stealing trojan).

Not sure what happened to it but CPUshare used to do something like that. I say like because it was far before GPU programming was big time. I have no idea why it shut down but they had a secure system. Insert ISO imaged disk into drive boot from it and sell hardware. Encrypted traffic, they made the images etc. Downside was you had to run everything off a live CD and make a new one anytime you changed prices. Upside was linux live cd that just worked was pretty awesome. Not sure if something like that is an option but would sure solve a lot of issues if something like GPUsmax did the same.
EDIT: not wallet stealing trojan but since it was before bitcoin it wouldn't be.

Has pirate made any progress on trying to get leased work for other applications beside bitcoin mining?

I really believe gpumax would take off if there was leased work for things like rendering, password cracking, scientific research, etc. it would also help people with large farms hedge if bitcoin ever had any issues.

I've long thought this is really where GPUMAX needs to go.. even made a post about it a couple months ago.. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=60511.msg717568#msg717568    there is demand out there for it  (www.hoopoe-cloud.com, amazon ec2 GPU clusters, etc..) ..  I also think there is already a secure method of implimenting a distributed GPU cloud -- I think it is http://boinc.berkeley.edu/

Currently Pirate gets ~10% margin on leased shares..  I'd wager that would be a pittance compared to what he could bring in re-leasing GPU time ..    just for comparison.. a 7970 at current BTC prices and difficulty will bring in (very roughly) about 10 cents per hour.  the on demand price for GPU's on an amazon ec2 cluster is 52 cents per hour per GPU ($2.10 per hour on a quadruple rig) ..

Heck, pirate could double his take to 20% margin, and we'd all still be maxing out the newegg credit lines trying to bring more power online.

Just my 2 cents..

Exactly what Siggy said...hahaha

Seriously though, would be great to help GPU people to stay in the game, we could lease to other services and secure the network in downtime. Everyone wins.
