If I run bitmonered.exe am I running a node when it syncs? I want to help support this community any way I can and that, for now, seems the best support I can offer.

Yes that is right, and if you type start_mining in the wallet you will be solo mining as well (mostly supports the network but you might get lucky and win a block). Usually the best number of threads to use is the L3 cache size of your CPU divided by 2 MB.

Thanks for all the help everyone. If I run the miner in the wallet I will be helping the community more, but will that burn out anything on my laptop? I dont care if Im successful in obtaining a block, I just want to help and dont want to f up my computer.....it cost me 800$....alot more than Ill get from ANY mining I might be capable of...how do I change the number of threads ? Step my step cuz Im slow like a four yr old type talk please. Thank you so much....

Best way I have found to run a node and help the network: https://getmonero.org/getting-started/running Smiley

Hi guys. I need a logo for Crypto Kingdom the game, and it should also symbolize CKG, the gold asset central in the game. ~0.5 BTC bounty is possible, or more if it's slick and professional.

Monero guys, help me. I cannot even define what constitutes a "logo" really.  Embarrassed
Coat of arms. On a pile of golden coins, one or more heraldic beasts to the left and right (a pony, a dwagon, a bear or a bull see more at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Heraldic_beasts). Lots of cryptic key emblemes. Well http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charge_(heraldry) summarieses it.

Needs a motto. How about "datorum, sed nusquam perfecti" ? (means the database will never get finished)

Okay first of all, nobody wants you to damage your computer. If it is properly designed and you don't block any vents then it should be fine, but if you have doubts, don't do it.

You put the number of threads after the start_mining command in the wallet.

If you don't know your L3 cache size (and most four year olds wouldn't) tell us your CPU model we'll help you. For most laptops the best number of threads to use is 1 but it varies.

A little question about memory footprint on 0.8.8.6. Is it okay? Or should I move my wallet to linux machine?

I had the same problem with my Windows machine. It seems this is a "normal" behavior, it maintains the blockchain running at RAM. I do'nt know why this still wasn't fixed, DarkNote already claims to have fixed this.

There is a "quick and dirty" way to reduce the memory usage without a database that some other cyptonote coins have adopted. We're not using it. The database code is available for testing now though, and should hit a release fairly soon.

The only thing I know Smooth is that it is an HP, I run Window 8.1 and it has a sticker on it that says

                  E1
               Vision
                AMD

I went to the AMD website a few days ago and updated all my drivers because I was trying to download a miner that suggested it, so I did. Because of that I would assume all my drivers are up to date. If that helps. I guess I just want to run the miner in the wallet to the best of my ability, contribute to the community, and maybe make a little something by accident. Thank for your help guys

                 E1
               Vision
                AMD

AMD E1 has 2 MB of L2 cache (no L3) so I would recommend one thread for solo mining. That leaves one core unused which should both reduce heat and not hurt your performance too much if you are also using the computer.

You may also be able to get a GPU miner going, using the AMD integrated GPU. It would depend if Claymore's miner (not open source) supports it. Here are your resources for that:

So I listened to the podcast and they mentioned that in the future minimum mixin will be changed to 4.
Was just wondering if there is going to be a even higher mixin option available by then?
So you can choose what mixin you want. I was thinking in the future the option might be 4, 5 or 6.

You've always been able to choose your mixin. I have made loads of transactions with a mixin of 100 on mainnet, and some with even higher mixins on testnet. This Missive covers the *minimum* mixin that users can set, nothing more:)

Oh god wow. That's a big, big boost. I never knew you can do a mixing over 4. Sweet!

I had the same problem with my Windows machine. It seems this is a "normal" behavior, it maintains the blockchain running at RAM. I do'nt know why this still wasn't fixed, DarkNote already claims to have fixed this.

They've borrowed/inherited/used the code Bytecoin wrote a few months ago to basically do the swapping your OS does already (that's not a slight or a negative remark, before the DarkNote dev jumps up and down, it's a dispassionate statement of fact).

Comparatively, this is Monero before the DB:

And after the DB:

That second screenshot is testnet and mainnet both running.

Incidentally, the database has been pretty stable for ~2 months now, although there's been a pretty constant stream of improvements to improve catch-up and sync-from-scratch speeds, hence us not finalising it and merging it into upstream just yet.

I was just trying to point out that he will probably not get short term results. Assuming he has 250H/s it would take him 45 days on average to find a block, or is my math wrong?

No, your math is probably right, and 250 H/s is probably high for a laptop. Maybe a better word than mining (which suggest perhaps a steady stream of useful minerals) to describe the process is prospecting or wildcatting.

WAY high - my MacBook Pro has a 3.0ghz dual-core i7 Haswell processor, and that does 34h/s:)

Something is messed up there, maybe extreme power management, using the wrong number of threads, no-AESNI build, etc.. You should get about 60 H/sec per thread.

Yes that's right about what it should be if properly configured with large pages, no low power management etc. use 2 btw. 8 will use more power.
