Can Monero use Sztorc's ideas for "smart-contract income-smoothing" and "scheduled blocks" to completely removes need for pools?

If yes, that would also remove the need to make p2pool work with Cryptonote.   Cool

Posted some comments re this r/Monero thread but it seems to have died:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/5uko8q/research_goal_new_difficulty_algorithm/

I still think its a worthwhile discussion so I repost here to see what you guys maybe think:

[–]ozkraut 4 points 3 days ago

that is a most interesting discussion which opened up a lot of thoughts about difficulty algorhitms and mining in general. The discussion on moving averages brought up some analogies in my sphere of expertise which is decision support tools for supply chain / inventory optimisation.Which includes a variety of forecast algos where I see some synergies in terms of measuring volatility and smoothing of spikes. Running multiple moving averages with different horizons to weigh the std deviation of each to smooth out peaks and troughs come to mind. Interesting topic. Thanks for the link. I shall think about it some more.

Maybe contribute to the discussion as well, if you have relevant knowledge

Been reading. Deep topic. Do we have historical hashrates stored anywhere? If so : were there any known attacks and can they be related to said hashrate history?

So far: As these events are initiated by at least one bad actor and as such are random from the observers perspective I shall deviate from my earlier view which drew analogies to demand history etc etc. This seems more motorracing related. Specifically suspension. What I understand so far is that it seems the issue of rebalancing the difficulty algo dynamically opens all sorts of opportunity to oscillate difficulty and take advantage at each end of the spectrum. Which gets me to back to suspension. What it seems to me is that we have the spring but we don't yet have the dampers which deaden the spring. Not sure if thats a great analogy but it resonates with me in terms of the randomness of the attack and the response the network has to give. I shall go away and look at some stuff on active suspensions and their approach. Just a hunch but it may be that an attack can be treated like a bump in the road......

edit: looking at this just for a sniff

To prevent this, I'd suggest to comment on the Github issue too. Stuff on reddit gets buried pretty fast. In addition, the search function isn't optimal in my opinion.

4. Help translate this and other important Monero content:

6. Get active on Monero Stack Exchange, help keep our activity levels high and share interesting questions with others:
https://monero.stackexchange.com/
http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/98617/monero

7. Every time you spend Bitcoin, use the services below then email the merchant to let them know that you would prefer if they accepted Monero directly. Let you favorite business know that Monero users are loyal to those that value privacy.

https://shapeshift.io/

8. Mine Monero and run one or more full nodes:
https://getmonero.org/getting-started/running

https://getmonero.org/getting-started/merchants

12. Create Monero related audio and video and share existing content on social media.

13. Register an account and start becoming active on https://forum.getmonero.org

14. Start using https://bitsquare.io/ and help increase trading liquidity for Monero on the P2P decentralized exchange.

15. Compile from source, test new features and report issues on GitHub:
https://github.com/monero-project/monero/issues

Users have the option to prove an XMR tx happened using a view key.

No they don't.

The viewkey is only available to the sender. It's the receiver that wants the "proof".

It's also a third party (arbiter) who may want the proof.

Not sure why no one did not posted this here

Wolfram Warptangent, Point Release 2

This is a necessary point release of Monero v0.10 "Wolfram Warptangent", and is a strongly, strongly recommended update as it includes massive efficiency improvements to the RingCT validation code and various other necessary bug fixes.

Some highlights of this release are:

- massive speed improvements to RingCT validation
- cache tx hashes for failed txs with bad semantics
- added an update notification / download / verification system (to be expanded to include opt-in auto-updating for unattended daemons)
- initial smart mining implementation (Linux only)
- improvements to IBD (initial block download) and sync speed
- switched to a portable serialiser so that wallet files can be used on any operating system
- added uptime to daemon status
- added support for separated mempool / peer datasets for multiple nodes on the same machine (with different p2p ports)
- added a change_password command to monero-wallet-cli
- addes support for restoring wallets from a certain date
- added mempool prioritisation of older txs
- added fixes to fluffy blocks (not enabled by default on mainnet yet)
- add HTTP digest authentication support to all RPC interfaces
- added a connection limit for incoming connections from the same IP
- switched to EasyLogging++ for logs
- added a gray peerlist house keeping system
- added support for multiple daemons using the same LMDB database
- added additional password prompting for monero-wallet-cli actions
- added additional output detail for ring output selection in monero-wallet-cli
- fixed issues with wallets dealing with large reorgs
- massive additions to libwallet_api for additional functions used by the GUI
- removed support for BerkeleyDB, as it is now deprecated
- added support for Android
- added support for DragonFlyBSD
- fixed armv8 build issues

Because the devs don't give a shit about BCT anymore.

Can you explain why this was added?

According to https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/5vsmom/psa_monero_0102_is_out_and_is_a_strongly/  the GUI update will be out "in the next few days or so", so I'd just wait for that. If you want to use 0.10.2 in the meantime, you can use the CLI.

Very sad, I liked your great work, thank you for all ! :-)

How must we configure official GUI to use a remote node, please ?
(this info should be clearly visible on the wallet, or at least on the wallet download page :-)

Many thanks :-)

That can be ignored, that peer will just be dropped, and replaced if it's an out peer.
