OK, here's another technical question: How do I programmatically find out at what block height the network is at? Interrogating (with get_info) a daemon in the process of syncing only shows the last block the daemon managed to get to, but not where the network is. You can query any pool API or explorer. Not sure if a local RPC call you can make.

Interrogating (with get_info) a daemon in the process of syncing only shows the last block the daemon managed to get to, but not where the network is. With the caveat that you can never know what the network really is at because you can never be certain you're not in a network partition... If you're currently syncing, the target_height field will be set to the current highest known height among the peers you've connected to. If you're not syncing, the target height will be 0, and thus the current height is the (part of your locally known) network's height.

Does anybody know what is the approximate ETA for the upcoming GUI monero wallet?
Soon. Hello, Do you find CloakCoin recent rise disturbing, and their new Enigma code as potential threat? They didn't open code so far, but plans are there. Can we see debate on this topic somewhere so people can judge for themselves. Wich system is better and gives more..? Thanks.
No and No. And yup your right this should be debated in another thread, why don't you start one? Does Bob Surplus still hold a bag of cloak?

I finally got around to installing win64 monerod 0.10.2.1 'ERROR - block recognized as orphaned and rejected' It's trying and failing to update my 0.9.4 blockchain lmdb. Incompatible? Is there a quick fix, or should I delete and start over? I wasn't paying attention in class I think the 0.10.x release moved from leveldb to lmdb, as a default option, and this option has now been removed. There are blockchain import/export tools you could use, or start a fresh blockchain download instead. Monero has always used LMDB as its database (well, since the first Hydrogen Helix release (0.9.0)). If I recall correctly, the database format changed though between version 0.9.4 and 0.10.0. @explorer, it's generally advised to resync from scratch if you are coming from 0.9.4. Thus, delete your old blockchain (data.mdb) and monerod will automatically resync from scratch. Gave up on it entirely in early 2014, and didn't even try again until Hydrogen Helix (0.9.0 thru 0.9.4). after a hiatus I've finally got the space and connection to get running again, sync going smoothly. Thanks hyc and all those making this easier by the day!

Yup, it's run by one of the Monero developers. I also heard (but can't verify) that only you can access your funds when you use them.

Fluffypony runs the site - he's one of the leading XMR devs. Sure, many thousands of dollars have been stolen using MITM attacks due to crappy vpns and poor openssl updates... A user here named Birr lost a LOT of money there, so be wary, i'm quite sure he will chime in. Edit - Shameless plug for physical original Monero coins here - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1828463.msg18204098#msg18204098Thanks!

When I made my first transaction this morning and my balance went to zero and almost broke something beautiful. Couple that with taking FOR-fucking-ever to confirm...30 confirmations are a drag. I'm synching my own wallet now, also taking forever.

Monero and Dash competition is fierce again, let us watch the result, will Monero's surge will stop Dash's bullish market? If yes, We will see XMR no.3.

A bit over 7k xmr, worth about ninety three thousand dollars at the time of theft. Your humble correspondent is bloodied but unbowed, as the expression goes. Been using command line daemon and wallet on linux ever since. At least one other person lost a significant amount, but I don't remember how much. Fluffy would have done well to require 2FA on that site, instead he had a laser focus on being user friendly to promote monero use and make it easy for newbs to get in... well, newbs make mistakes. Mistakes like using Fluffy's web wallet.

There's a hell of lot more money supply involved in DASH, so when Monero hits its tail emission (an ever decreasing money supply inflation rate) it is quite possible that its market cap will surpass dash. The GUI application will open up XMR to less technically minded people. The anonymity technology is much better in XMR than DASH. DASH as gone on such a thin market astronomical pump it going to take quite a constipated squeeze to get that dump out. Then it will plop with a big splash.

XMR had huge volume over 100000 BTC in last ATH, but Dash has less, maybe more small investors have Dash, so they can pump so high, if whales have many Dash, they will dump crazily to cash out.

Concentrate on the technology and real world application use, and the market cap will look after itself. Speculation is the overwhelming dictator of price at the moment, that will eventually reduce with real supply and demand.

He is out of Cloak for a long time! He probably already forget for this project, which has entirely different development team and plans. New tech has entirely new approach, we can discuss about it, if you are interested in new topic. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1829362.new#new

I watched it all and that community was just too low brow for my taste, but thx. Toss the link to your new thread and I'll lurk it but I can't conceive of any way I'd get involved. Edit: I see the links in your sig, subbed.

When I send 1 XMR, 100 XMR is sent and 99 XMR comes back.
How can I limit or lower the amount for sending coin? It's quite annoying that I can't send next payout immediately because all coins are sent temporarily.
Is a bug from wallet daemon? Or intended? I'm using v0.10.1.0-release.

You must have many small chunks of XMR if you want to send small amounts. Else, if you have, say, chunks of 50 or 100 the mixin will select them and then you must wait for the balance to mature (become spendable) again. It's not a bug.

That entirely depends on the kind of inputs your wallet owns. Think of inputs as bills. If you only have a $100 bill and try to buy something worth 1$ you'd need to use the $100 bill and you'll receive $99 as change. Monero works similiarly. If your wallet only has a 100 XMR input it will use this input to transfer 1 XMR to the recipient. The change will then be 99 XMR minus the fee. Thus, this is simply how Monero works and intended. I presume you are running a mining pool. Therefore, over time, you should receive a lot of (relatively) smaller inputs from the coinbase transactions (block rewards + fees of transactions included in the block). I'd advise the simply be patient. Your situation will eventually resolve itself and you'll be able to make quicker payments.

Monero is great and I've heavily invested into it, however I don't see it getting enough pace of developement, enough funds (giving incentive) for developement and dealing with the scaling problems when the network actually gets big in a few years. In a way it is not Bitcoin 2.0 it is Bitcoin 1.5...
User friendliness, marketing, scaling. Monero's governance needs to deal with these and it can't cause' it's poor as it is. Get some models going to get those funded and governated please. The code is law, but it's not artificial intelligence, thus cannot solve real world implementation problems by itself.
The way Monero is today, if community does not act before it gets full of retards, a day will come this will be nothing different than anon bitcoin, which is sad. Because an anon bitcoin can only hope to make it to a slightly better level than bitcoin. And we already see other cryptos flying by with inovation in government and fundraising for developement.
I'm drunk, so sorry for typos... Cheers
