If they have significantly changed the service (Such as making it require validation before rolling) it would have been nice to have an official message on here, or on the site saying "By the way, we had to change the following to protect ourselves from cheating"

Because yeah, the added delays have made it much more complicated to execute any kind of betting strategy at all.
Well, all I can tell you is that yet two days ago I was able to do few bets (one after loosing another) within one block.
And today I need to wait till my transaction get mined, plus few more extra minutes, to get my bet answered.

Plus, obviously they had a problem with double-spending cheating.
In fact I was thinking about cheating like this myself Tongue
But I did not have to, since I was eventually always winning after all.

So I'm glad they fixed it and the service will not get insolvent, because I actually like it.
Even though it's much less responsive now. Sad

I love the service, and certainly dont want to see it be cheated... but I wont use it anymore if its not 'instant'... it completely kills the fun for me... I cant wait multiple blocks to finish 1 martingale round...

This has such HUGE potential... I really hope the SatoshiDice operators figure out how to make it work as intended.

Well, the only way to make it instant would be to deposit your funds into their wallet and play with them then.
Accepting bitcoin transactions without confirmations, acting upon it, is like shouting out "steal my money!" Smiley
I don't think they can do anything "to make it work as intended" - it's just how bitcoin is designed; you must not trust any transaction that has not been mined into the chain. If you do, you are screwed - sooner or later.

It doesn't work as quickly as it used to.

I think the service had suffered from double speeding cheating and so now it only rolls the dice after the incoming bet is mined in at least one block.

Well, still better than nothing... Smiley

No, when I said something about this "Double Spending" I was referring to their service!

My transaction was way back (like 30 blocks ago) and my payment is still waiting to be sent, now it's like 5 hours later and it still says:

Warning! this transaction is a double spend. You should be extremely careful when trusting any transactions to/from this sender.

Unconfirmed - Double Spend

On blockchain.info, so does this mean that Satoshidice is trying to cheat me?? I'm not trying to cheat them - nor do I even know how! I just want my btc that I won fair and square...!

I would be happy to make an account and deposit funds to play
...
but then I would have to trust the site operators alot more than I do now...shit...

EDIT: Not that I dont trust the operators... just that a lot of the value in a service like this is the fact that you dont have to trust the operators.

Maybe they could structure it so that the net loss to any address, should they double-spend, would be less than the net profits gained from said address.

For example, I send 1 BTC to a satoshidice address.  1% of that, on average, would be kept by them.  So now they have "made" 0.01 BTC on me, and I could send a 0-conf, 0.01 BTC bet to them that would be immediately accepted and processed.  A 0.02 BTC bet would still require 1 conf.  After 100 bets of 1 BTC each, they would trust me with any bet up to 1 BTC, since that is the amount of profit they would have gained from me at that point.  So, I could do a 0-conf bet up to 1 BTC instantly.

An alternative would be to send a deposit from a specific address.  So satoshidice has an address 1deposit, and if I send 1.0 to that address, it just holds it there.  Any bets up to the deposit amount that I make that come from the same address as the deposit are automatically 0-conf.  I can unlock the deposit and have it sent back to me if I send a satoshi to the deposit address from the same address.  If I double-spend one of my bets, then satoshidice just permanently takes that much of my deposit.

I think require deposit + login would be a good idea to allow instant results.

Hey all - yes today (and yesterday) were very messy with the payments. We've change the coding now and we think it will be much better. I really appreciate all the patience and feedback. We're working on it until it runs smooth as butter.

To address some former posts - we have not/will not change SatoshiDice payouts to require a confirmation. The goal is always for the payout to be instant.

And if there are any material changes to how it works that would affect your bets, we will absolutely post it here.

Hang in there everyone!

PS - as the site owners, we are at a net loss thus far as our luck has been terrible last few days. So, I hope you're all enjoying your net winnings! SatoshiDice has been a charity to you all so while I'm crying I hope you're happy!  Cheesy

I think it's not your luck, some one is cheating the system, I've been watching for 3 days as your btc pool fallen from 250+ to now 14, there's some type of cheating going on. Some one is winning consistently, with large bets, on very low winning odds, though he does throw in some small losing bets to make it look more natural.

You have obviously put a lot of careful thought into SatoshiDice.  Have you figured out your odds of losing all your capital?  Just like a gambler can run out of money the house has a probability of running out of money too.  You can tune your going broke chances with your invested capital, bet limits and the house cut.  Your expenses will figure into this too.  Did you calculate a going broke probability?  Do you have a quantitative measure of the risk you are taking?  It's an interesting math problem for which I don't have the skill or energy to figure out.

Real casinos go broke too.

the max is dynamic and changes on every single bet placed.

Anyway that can be verified?  Otherwise the house could cheat by this sequence:

Max bet = 1000 BTC.
Player places bet for 1000 BTC.
House determines if bet wins or loses.
If lose - then record as a loss
If win - then reduce max bet to 900 BTC and record as over max.

Hey,

I've decided to try this out and I have received return payment (using official client). My txid is this one: http://blockchain.info/tx-index/5415494/abf8280956d429425ce0beb9e4fe6691c1627f328a207cc6eaee7efd440c4564

on the web, I deducted that the info about transaction can be shown here: http://satoshidice.com/full.php?tx=abf8280956d429425ce0beb9e4fe6691c1627f328a207cc6eaee7efd440c4564 (although my doesn't appear to be listed on the site). Also, the address appears to return the funds directly and quiet a few transactions does not seem to be processed: http://blockchain.info/address/1dice9wVtrKZTBbAZqz1XiTmboYyvpD3t

Bug?

Edit: I've received response now and the list of recent bets seems updated.

Quick update:  Since our house run of luck has been terrible (though we still believe, within the bounds of statistical possibility without cheating), we are increasing the house edge just slightly, up to 1% from .818%. We may bring the edge back down in the near future. We need to do this as the house pool is not large enough to enable people to be placing the size of bets they'd like so this should help with that aspect.

Also yes, the max bet changes as each bet is calculated. While it sucks to win and have it not count due to a changing of the max before you bet was processed, it's also just as likely that you will lose, and then have it not count either. So, the + and - should equal out. As the service runs for longer, and the house pool is more healthy, the volatility of the max bet should fall over time.
