evoorhees,

Can you confirm that bets over a certain amount now do not process until 1 confirmation?

I seem to be able to get 1.00 btc to respond immediately on occasion, but anything north of that appears to get held until 1 confirmation.

Is that normal across the board or is there some type of filtering that causes this? I'm just wondering if there is something slowing me down so that I can play without waiting 10-15 mins between bets since I am usually betting over 1btc.

From what I know your bet will receive an instant response provided:
- all the inputs to your bet are confirmed
- you add a suitable fee to your transaction

- all the inputs to your bet are confirmed
- you add a suitable fee to your transaction

The "advanced" part of the SD website says:

Quote
The best way for you to ensure your Bitcoin bet is returned to you quickly, is for you to include the standard fee of .0005btc in your payment transaction. This helps it get noticed by the network faster, and SatoshiDICE picks it up, calculates it, and returns it to you faster

0.0005 BTC is more than the required fee for lots of transactions, and way less than the required fee for others.  I don't know whether the website is accurate or not, but if they instantly process all bets with a fee of 0.0005 or more then they're asking for trouble.  I can construct a bet that requires a much bigger fee than that, and so will take a long time to confirm.

It would be good to hear the official position on how they decide which bets to process immediately, and to have it explicitly stated on the website.

2 BTC and up -always- requires confirmation [this is after hundreds of games], regardless of the fee attached.  I know my 1 BTC bets used to get instant response when they had a fee attached, but I never made any between 1 and 2 to determine where the exact cutoff was.

It would be nice to have the old instantaneous SatoshiDice back, but I can certainly understand the need to wait for confirmations on large bets.  It's just too easy to attempt a double spend when you lose, and on large bets, there is significant incentive to do so.

Hi, I'm new to this whole SatoshiDice business and so I tried to test it out to see how it works and I can't tell if it works.

First I sent .001 BTC like it says on the website to test it and here is the blockchain thing https://blockchain.info/tx-index/52328977/a285c66db31a8669e0002b700d941af6e106df83e0758abe78dcf0701b809558 I never got anything back like the website said I would so I tried again with 0.01 and I still haven't gotten anything back. Here's the blockchain thing for it https://blockchain.info/tx-index/52329479/c444df3fe71ef9bd79dbb2a2e66f3cfb2d56f3d98b77a71245e6c5e38bd8a429

I'm using the Bitcoin qt client that you get from the official website. Am I doing something wrong?

Nope, you did everything correct. Your first small bet is stuck. Many people have been having the same issue. Just be patient. If is still stuck after 24 hours, mention it again. (Including links to the transactions is a huge help.)

Your second bet (BTC0.01 on 97%) was evaluated. It won and you were paid a total of 0.01054424 minus the transaction fee of 0.001 resulting in a payout of 0.00954424 into your wallet.

Your payout transaction:

You can search for bets using your address or the transaction ID on the lookup tool once it has been processed.

ThickAsThieves is correct.  Minimum bet is BTC0.01 And I forgot about that.

Bets below the minimum are not returned.

I'm thinking input confirmation is what's slowing things down. I did a test by moving BTC into a fresh wallet and using a mixer to get "clean" coins and initially even my larger bets (5btc+) seemed to return almost immediately. Over time they slowed back down to what I had been experiencing before. Hardly conclusive, but I do think perhaps shoving your results into a separate account and only betting with fully confirmed coin will always yield quicker return times.

The initial reason for the test was that blockchain.info kept losing network connectivity resulting in the "double spend" warning being applied to that wallet, so I wanted to see if there was any noticeable difference in win rates or round trip times after being "badged".

"Only use wallets that allow you to receive Bitcoin from the same address you sent from. If you're not sure, test with .001 Bitcoins. If you get nothing back, then your wallet is not compatible."
That is a direct quote from the site.

Also how will I know that the bitcoins I recieved are from them? I got a payment of 0.00954424 from a random address I have in my receive coins tab and I don't know what it's for so it it them?

I can confirm that some bets will not pay out until a confirmation occurs. However the criteria we use for this is proprietary and we intentionally do not describe details about it.

To be sure, this is slightly more draconian that when SD first launched, but this has been a learning process. The threat of double-spends is real, and we're continually trying to achieve the most efficient balance between risk for the house and convenience for players. I will say that I've been extremely happy with our ability to stave off double-spends, and I greatly appreciate that people often bring new rumors or strategies to my attention. There's not a perfect solution to the trade-off, unfortunately, though there is a long-term project in the works that will very nearly solve this problem.

I need to update the site text, for sure. Thanks for the reminder, sometimes you get blind to the stuff you see every day  Smiley

Minimum bets are .01 (site text is outdated, sorry!).  We increased the minimum because people were complaining that SatoshiDICE was creating too many tiny transactions on the network.

Your .01 bet did indeed come back to you (as a win) https://blockchain.info/tx/797f5ea530393e8160ae8fd72d6e0bc467968b8bc6d18bb5c03e5ede61e5aed1

This is done not to be sneaky, but to discourage ddos and network spam. Rest assured that far more than these little "donations" are reinvested in the Bitcoin community in various places by SatoshiDICE.

While you're at it, this needs updating too:

If you're not sure, test with .001 Bitcoins. If you get nothing back, then your wallet is not compatible.

Also, the "MIN / MAX BETS" doesn't mention min bets at all.  It sounds like they're treated as donations, but it would be better to state that in the instructions.

I made a few .01 bitcoin bets over an hour ago that have already been fully confirmed but satoshidice still hasn't sent me back any winnings or .0000001s. Is it supposed to take this long for small bets?

I wish they'd add the ability to pick above OR below the RNG value. I've had a ton of 7+ string of losses in the "50%" game, and even a 30+ string.  I've NEVER seen a winning streak of more than 5 though. Ever.

Yeah I know it shouldn't matter, etc.

Apparently offering such a feature would only help you 'feel' better about your delusions...

It really does make no difference because the numbers are truely random and are used only once for each game- you can't bet against another player, only against the house, so it wouldn't catch on.

Your argument is similar to saying that we don't need the 'red' bet on a roulette table, since there's no difference between 'red' and 'black'.

Mathematically that's true, but players like to feel like they have some control.  If you feel the lucky number is going to be high next time you play, wouldn't you like to be able to play "over 32767" instead of "lessthan 32768"?
Ah nice - help people 'feel' better about their delusions Smiley
