Unlike traditional banking where clients have only a few account numbers, with Bitcoin people can create an unlimited number of accounts (addresses). This can be used to easily track payments, and it improves anonymity.

Do I need to post something about my stuck transactions, or is it something that just fixes itself if I wait long enough?  I've got two been unconfirmed for 4 days.

I don't see any bets from 4 days ago in the blockchain that haven't got corresponding payments from SatoshiDice.

I suspenct that either your bet never got into the blockchain, or you've been paid already.

Can you post the transaction IDs?

I've looked deeper.  The transaction IDs are not in the blockchain.  They simply show as unconfirmed in my wallet.  Is this what happens with orphan transactions?  It's only .019 btc so not a big deal.  I'm redownloading the blk files so it'll be sometime tomorrow before it'll let me get to the trans IDs, but I'm sure it'll only confirm what I've already discovered.

I don't know what would have caused your transactions never to confirm.  Could you have double-spent some of your coins maybe?  If you have another copy of the same wallet on a different computer that can happen.

I can look into the details for you if you do the following:

* copy the transaction ID of one of the unconfirmed bets
* on the Help menu, click 'Debug window'
* select the 'console' tab
* type getrawtransaction xxxxxxx (where xxxxxxx is the transaction ID you copied above)
* post the result

That will allow me to see the transaction, even though either your client or the bitcoin network as a whole is rejecting it.

On my end, I'll open the debug console the same way, but will run this instead:

* decoderawtransaction yyyyyyy (where yyyyyyy is the result of your getrawtransaction that you post)

You can try it to see what information you're revealing.  It's exactly the same information as if the transaction you tried to make had ended up being sent.

From https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=120199.msg1298954#msg1298954:

Quote
The problem is with the bitcoin network / miners have trouble with large chains of unconfirmed transactions. Since the memory pool of bitcoind miners is limited sometimes if an unconfirmed chain reaches a certain size the transactions at the beginning maybe pushed out of the memory pool. Meaning the rest cannot confirm.

If that is indeed what happened, then wouldn't the client automatically be resending the transactions on a regular basis?

You can force it to try resending a transaction.

Go to the debug console (Help > Debug window > Console) then:

  * getrawtransaction transaction-id-to-resend
  * sendrawtransaction big-long-hex-string-from-the-above

Now, I can show my ignorance.  I'm using the standard client and 'debug' isn't an option in the help menu.  In any case, here is everything I know about the unconfirmed transaction.  The bet went thru and I even won, but the transaction from satoshidice to me is the one that is unconfirmed.

Like I said before, it's not a big deal. But I'm learning a lot about how all this works by troubleshooting an issue.

Sometimes someone flooding SD with a lot of small bets. And the others have to wait until the game chews all these txs. I wish they do anything to speed-up their engine. Necessity to wait 5-10 seconds after each bet kills the fun.

You won't lose coins even if their server is hit by a meteorite. Every bet is stored in the blockchain.

And I don't see that transaction anywhere.  What's the transaction id for your corresponding bet transaction?  You can find it by right-clicking the bet in your client and selecting 'show transaction details' and then can copy/paste the txid.

What exactly happens to all of the unconfirmed transactions? Will they get stuck or will they eventually confirm?

If a bet is confirmed, it will eventually be paid out.

If a bet never confirms, it will eventually disappear.

So it really depends which half of the bet/payment it is that's "stuck".

you get to see the 3 outputs.

You'll see that all 3 are marked as 'spent', including the two satoshidice outputs:

That means they've processed the bets and payed you out.

Click the two 'spent' links next to the two satoshidice bets to see how much they paid.

and the 0.01 bet to the 50/50 address won:

So maybe you just didn't notice the payouts in your wallet?  Or are you sure they're not there?

So maybe you just didn't notice the payouts in your wallet?  Or are you sure they're not there?

Thanks for all the effort in looking into this tiny problem.  I went back thru my transactions, and sure enough, on the 25th I have an unmatched .01953848 transaction.  That must be it finally clearing in.  I still however have those unconfirmed transactions that should disappear.  Do you know of the magic keystroke to get those to go away?

I don't know of a good way of removing unconfirmed transactions other than using the PyWallet program which is a little awkward to use.  But if you want to try, there are instructions in the first post here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=34028.0  See "Delete transactions from your wallet".

Close down bitcoin and make a backup of your wallet before you try it.
