Even if it doesn't work, or isn't profitable, maybe it's effective as a denial of service attack against the site, polluting their wallet with transactions which will never confirm.

Good and interesting point, time for me to go read up on double spend attacks some more and the results of one on a victims wallet.

Well, SD pays out unconfirmed bets.  When your bet loses, you get 0.5% of it back, and the other 99.5% goes into their wallet as change, and is used to pay out the winning bets.  If the wallet has lots of old confirmed change from losing bets, that's fine, but what if the only coins available in the wallet are unconfirmed change from losing bets?

When you win, and they pay you out with unconfirmed change from other people's losing bets, it's possible that at least one of those losing bets was double-spent and never confirms.  That means the 0.5% returned payment never confirms, and so neither does the change you were paid with.  That in turns means your winning payment won't confirm.

I don't know how you fix that, but I'm guessing it requires manual intervention.

This payment was never put into a block but it remains as an unconfirmed deposit in my client.  Can anyone explain what happened?  I would like to get rid of this because it is a permanent unavailable balance.  How do I remove it?

ok with regret I am r re-adding the note about their regular outages.

I had the request just 1 week ago and it has been 1 week of large payouts not being processed with no response from the site ops.
Im still sure they will resolve this when they get around to answering their mail but gamers need to be warned.

I switched to BTCDice, for the time being, for this exact reason... not a fan of missing payments for days at a time... hope it gets fixed soon.

http://www.blockchain.info/double-spends

what is the deal with all the double spends on Satoshi Dice?  Is someone trying to ruin the fun for everyone?

You are paying many times more in transaction fees than those satoshis are worth.  You would be better off just throwing the dust away.

If you want to consolidate the dust, and have some large amounts with lots of confirmations you can try sending (large_amount + 0.00000010) to yourself.  The large amount should be high enough priority that the dust can 'ride for free'.

Or keep on paying the high fees - I'm sure the miners don't mind that at all.

I see three possibilities:

1) it's a competitor trying to slow down SD payments so their crappy clone site looks better in comparison
2) it's someone trying to cheat by double-spending their losing bets
3) it's an accident - someone has some double-spent inputs in their wallet or buggy client software or some such and doesn't know what's going on

I don't know if 3) is plausible.  The first two would seem to be the more likely.

Notice that the double spends started around the time that SD suffered large losses.

i consolidate it myself every now and then, but would prefer to not use them, those tx are made by a bot over rpc, no idea why when there are a lot of better fitting inputs*, and it causes problems up the wazoo, but none of that matters when the dice aren't replying

*better fitting was a bad choice of words, i meant there were inputs larger than what i wanted to send with more confirmations, so it could have used a single input^

If you don't want the satoshi coins to be spent, you can change the source code quite easily and rebuild.  There's a single place you can change:

In src/wallet.cpp:

Code:
                if (!(pcoin->IsSpent(i)) && IsMine(pcoin->vout[i]) && pcoin->vout[i].nValue > 0)

Change the 0 to any number N and it will only spend outputs worth more than N satoshis.

You'll have to change it back (or keep multiple copies of the program around) to consolidate the dust manually.

I reported this on the bitcoin bugtracker since it seems like a bug to me: https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/issues/1643

Can you give details of the "betting fitting inputs" you had?  I mean the inputs it used fit perfectly - the sum of the inputs is exactly equal to the bets plus the change plus the fees.  The problem is that the fee is 40 times bigger than the amount you were trying to send!

oh, by better inputs i mean it could have used a single input and given change, I didn't really think of it as the inputs fitting perfectly, I will have to get around to building the dust ignoring version for windows

Yeah, I think the only think the client tries to optimise is the 'fit' - ie. it tries to minimise the amount of change you get.  Even if that ends up costing you 40 times your payment's value in fees...
