Hi,

just want to see if there's anyone on the forums located in or having bonds to Malaysia.
I'm considering setting up an exchange, but want to start small trading directly with ppl.
Any Malaysians wanting to send money home from abroad using bitcoins f.ex. , are welcome to contact me.

There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.

Yep, I'm running a small farm of 2.8~GH/s. I normally just sell/buy directly at US though, I've a bank account there.

Interesting. Was wondering if it could be profitable to mine here - how are your power costs?
Since there is not much BTC available here, you might be able to get slightly more for your bitcoin here.
I'm certainly interested.

It depends on your electricity tariff. I run my miners in a spare room leading to the side patio due to the extreme heat here, and the tariff is calculated as domestic use. Check the tariff here : http://www.tnb.com.my/residential/pricing-and-tariff.html
The now defunct (due to the sheer size now) Bitcoin Map (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2346.0) showed before that there was bitcoin nodes in KL and Penang last year, so there should be unknown bitcoiners quietly hashing in their storerooms.  Cheesy

Also, do you know where to buy mining hardware around here?

You could probably pick up GPU's here -but the best choices like 58xx and 59xx series are either sold out or depreciated. I did manage to pick up my GPU's earlier last year when they were still up for sale, though. You could try looking around for the newer 7970 series at Lowyat Plaza (if you're in KL) or some other computer parts shop like PC Depot and so. If you're rolling in cash, you could try ordering some FPGA's or even that ASIC from ButterflyLabs as they save space and electricity.

Not involved, but I bought there until they had zero bitcoins left...
Expensive service though. And they don't buy coins yet.
Would like to see a proper exchange around here.
Maybe I'll set one up...

My thoughts exactly.

I thought about that too. However SG is very tight when it comes to money matters. I guess you'd need a good lawyer, not even sure if it'd be legal here...

Do you have places selling liberty reserve and the like? There's a dozen in Malaysia. If they're legal, this should be legal. Of course, you should always include a lawyer if setting up a site that handles other people's money.

Seek and you shall find: http://ecurrencyzone.com/exchange.php (scroll down a bit) in Singapore. They quote 5.25 USD per BTC -> ~12-13%

Interesting. Doesn't look like they accept bank transfers though, you can only buy bitcoins with okpay. Whatever that is...

Nope, not me either.

Be careful of those liberty reserve exchangers; I've known a few to have folded shop suddenly without honouring their part of the deal, only to have set up shop again under a different name tomorrow. There isn't any express rule pertaining to the banning of the usage of e-currency though, so that should be legal over here.
