I'm willing to bet a large chunk of Cypriots interested in moving money out of the country are already in another country themselves. North and East London have massive Cypriot communities, most of them with local businesses and hence money in the 'old country'.

Also, Geo-locating IPs is becoming less reliable as IP4 addresses dry up.

The stats on sourceforge show Cyprus down near 50th with a negligible percentage of downloads. Not what you would expect if there was serious amount of investment going on. However, the last weekly count for Cyprus, 149 downloads, is greater than 50% of the monthly count, so there is *some* increase in interest recently.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/bitcoin/files/Bitcoin/stats/map

It would be cool to see these numbers normalized to population.

Cyprus has a population of less than 900,000. You wouldn't expect it to be close in number of downloads to Korea (50 million people), but it is.

Journalists exaggerate and sometimes even make stuff up. I guess in this case you could say it's just exaggeration.

I'm still not sure what to make of this. If I understand correctly verification is necessary only to withdraw money and to deposit more than $50,000. I doubt these 8000 people want to really deposit more than 50,000. Maybe these are mainly people who want to be able to withdraw fiat?

It's required for Aussies to make domestic transfers, the only other option without verification is bank transfer which shows the following when selected, I'm not sure if domestic transfer is better with fees etc but I would hope so - it seems you need ID either way.

----

Note: Please be sure to instruct your transfer to be sent in a specific currency that you wish for to ensure that they are not converted by the intermediate bank or receiving bank in the process in order to avoid any exchange rate losses. For example, if you wish to receive USD in your Mt.Gox wallet, please instruct the bank for the funds to be sent only in USD and ask the bank to add a message, "Do not Convert" to avoid the intermediate bank from converting the funds as well.

You can do bank transfers in any currency that we currently support in our currency markets to our bank in Japan.  Any fee charged by your bank or an intermediate bank will be deducted.  Our bank charges a 1,000 Yen receiving fee.

If you plan to invest more than 50000 USD or equivalent on the long term in bitcoins, we need to know about you. In this case please use our verification system to get your account verified first.

Please also be advised that all deposits are subject to an ID check by our AML team and this process would take up to 1 business day.  First-timer depositors are requested to upload their copy of the official ID to facilitate this process (you will not have to be fully verified at this point if your deposit is lower than 50,000 USD)
.
Submission of forged documents will result in declaration to the appropriate authorities.

Not following the instructions written below can result in your funds being lost, or handed over to the local authorities while pending investigation.

Also note that International deposits lower than 50 USD (or equivalent) typically result in only a small amount of funds being deposited into the receiving account or may be rejected because the amount of fees went over the amount of sent funds. This is due to intermediaries and banking fees.

If you plan to do a EUR transfer from Europe, we strongly encourage you to send money via the Euro Bank Transfer deposit option. It is a much cheaper way to deposit, however it is only available to accounts that have a "verified" or "trusted" status.

500 is also a round number.

and around 30 will then be the re-test of previous breakout. Therefore sell at 500, put buy orders near 30 and then ride it to the moon!

Any ideas on how come Slovakia and Czech republic are that high on the list? Quite unexpected. What's going on there?
Nothing going on here, the high position is from previous time.

Love the action this weekend. Feels like we're building a nice base here above $90.
