Hey community !
I have a very important topic I want to discuss with you
We've been approached by Channel 4, a very well known TV channel in UK. They liked spells of Genesis and they might open the discussion for a publishing deal.
Just to make it clear - they liked the game itself and they are probably unaware of the whole blockchain thing. It's just a beginning of discussion with them.
The role of a publisher is to provide marketing and visibility for the game studio. Making a great game is one thing, having people downloading it even if it’s a great game, it’s another challenge. Usually the game studio provides the creative input and the publisher makes sure the game is sustainable and makes money. A game can also be self-published but in that case the game studio requires solid marketing people, people who are emotionally not involved in the creative process but are on hard numbers. A good balance of both is required to have a great success.
Having a publisher implies a cost in the revenue share, but it’s worthy if the publisher invests in customer acquisition (marketing) and is able to make his job and drive revenues. Choosing the good publisher is critical, because he needs to be able to drive downloads to justify his cut. Big publishers usually are masters as analysing how much cost to acquire a new customer and how much revenue to expect from it.
So Channel 4 is a big name in UK, but a small publisher. Their cut is also very reasonable (confidential for the moment)
Basically their offer is to promote Spells of Genesis trough their community platform, which has a good amount of users. It could definitely give a boost to the game, but since it’s mostly UK based, does it justify to give a cut to the worldwide sales ? They say they have good relation with Apple and Google UK (note all publishers say that) and that way the game could be pushed on the front door of the stores giving a lot of visibility and downloads. According to them, having a good visibility in UK store usually might lead to acquire a good visibility in other European countries and US too.
Advantages of working with channel 4:
- Small cut on the revenue, comparing to other publishers
- Reach towards their content channels with several millions users
- They are looking for new content, so it might be relatively easy to talk with them
Disadvantages:
- New to the games field, their ability to successfully promote the product still has to be proven
- Reach limited mostly to UK (could snowball but still to be proven)
Since Spells of Genesis is also YOUR game, I’m asking you for your feedback before we go any deeper in the discussion. Remember this is only the beginning of our discussion, no deal will be signed before discussing further all the implications of such a deal. My question here is more this: Should we start discussing with them, knowing the fact it’s an investment in time?
I’m listening to your thought.
