Yeah, I too think I eventually found the holy grail thingy after like 6 months or so, iirc.
I also recall stumbling on an “Easter egg” screen of the Starship Enterprise that cruised by.
It didn’t answer when I tried to communicate though.
Fun times for sure. And many beers and bong hits....
Yeah. Eventually I just started taking on the Galactic police. If you're fully upgunned and armored it can be one hell of a battle....

Weird game. Way way ahead of its time.

That reminded me of Starflight that I used to play obsessively on my roommate's Tandy 1000 back in the mid eighties. That game was epic.

Oh starflight.... First game I loved right till the end, then wanted to stick my head in an oven....

Herd immunity is already there.

Numbers are going down.

https://www.ft.com/coronavirus-latest

Virus is running out of warm bodies to infect.

True, warm bodies have been kept distanced, away from each other, etc and the numbers are going down. More in countries that did this well, less in countries that did not do this well. "Herd" immunity works when the herd is being careful.

Now we get to see what happens when you re-add bodies to the pool.

I have a feeling I know which way this is going to go, when you tamp down a fire to coals and then pour gasoline on the coals you get a predictable response. But hey, maybe "this time it will be different"....

Let's check back in 2 months. Place your bets folks, just remember that chip you're betting with is your life.

That was the machine I cut my teeth on and yeah that 16k expansion pack was a f**king mare. The amount of times you would spend tediously typing in BASIC only for it to glitch and lose everything.
Who remembers trying to back up to cassette tape and trying different volume levels on the mic before it would work (if ever).
Ah those were the days.

The Timex Sinclair was an amazing computer. I think it had 4 chips and used a CPU data line to directly drive the screen or something like that. Also made an excellent shim to hold a door open.

I should dig mine out and see if I can boot CP/M on it. Why not....

... so back-of-envelope for the Flu-Bros ... only 13x more people needed to catch it (and 13x more people die supposedly) until "herd immunity" ... France current death toll ~30k x13 ~~ 390k total .. for example, without better therapies (which exist but are currently being denied by establishment Vaxx-bros), other interventions, etc.

1) How do you die "supposedly"? Are they sinking the bodies in the ocean with cement shoes?
2) Hm. 84k people dead in the US. Multiply by 13x and you get 1.1 million dead. We're well on the way to that number....

I really can't believe it is still like this.   It really does not inspire confidence.  It is horrible.

The gas chambers this time around will be a softer gentler approach...

Vaccines utilizing radical new technology that's never been tested will do the trick in a much easier way. They're already implementing plenty of measures to ensure people get the vaccine without forcing them. But they will be given little to no choice.

A softer, gentler gas chamber?

Hm.

Yep, bitcoin is on a 20% sale right now. Get it while you can.

I live in a nation that can conceptualize and produce this:

Nothing to really fear in the long term.

You can keep your liberties.

Much as I would like to thank you for your magnanimous offer, I'm afraid that my fellow 'merkins -- many of them at least -- would rather cower under a benevolent boot than take responsibility for their own well-being. And accordingly are making an irresistible force determined to throw away their liberties - with mine thrown right out in the process.

As for myself, I'm perfectly capable of limiting my exposure to disease vectors on my own volition.
We'll see. At the moment our loving leader is beginning to realize the limits of his control of reality....

More to the point: Requiring the wearing of masks is like requiring the wearing of pants. Sorry, otherwise you smear your shit everywhere you sit, thus society requires pants. You exhale virus particles and infect others so society requires masks.

I'd think it would take more energy to escape the sun's gravity (i.e. "the solar system") than fall into the sun, unless you're in a high orbit like a comet.
Physics Man's speculations leave out lots of specifics.  Do you first have to launch a rocket from the earth?  That adds a bunch more energy required.
And what's with the Delta V business?  That's just acceleration, which is an instantaneous measure and doesn't tell you how much "propellant" you're going to need for the stated job of going to or from the sun.

Well, in order to fall into the sun you have to stop orbiting it. De-orbit is tougher than you think because you're starting off with a lot of velocity from the Earth. Now you can lose energy by doing flybys of the inner planets, but since they are smaller than Jupiter you lose less energy than you can gain by a Jupiter/Saturn flyby. So it is easier to go out of the solar system from Earth than into the sun.

Messenger's wikipedia page (mercury orbiter) probably has a good write up on the process.

I love how every fucking coin goes down in unison. Guess someone had a hankering for cash to buy a planet or something.

I (if I controlled the government) would have done the same thing the government does during a bad flu season.

If I also controlled the government I would likely use the crisis as an opportunity to turn the health care system into a completely decentralized blockchain aided free market system.

If it was truly a bad pandemic people would be able to buy respirators (or 3D print their own), have a negative pressure room in their home/garage/basement, and AirBnB the hospital space. Uber Doctors and Nurses that come and check on patients and give monitoring advice to AirBnBs.

Elwar, if you were in control with the government this would never have been an issue. Heck if a fucking chicken had been in control this would probably have been a minor issue. The thing that really ticks me off is that this happened THREE times in the past.

  • In 2002 we had the SARs epidemic. World governments worked together to contain and mitigate it, and the result was a minor issue with no recurrence.
  • In 2011 we had the H5N1 nightmare. World governments tried to suppress, then because of me they worked together to identify and create vaccines for it. No problem.
  • In 2012 we had the MERS epidemic. World governments worked together to contain and mitigate it, and the result was a minor issue with no recurrence.

Now in 2020 we have COVID/SARS. Same thing but this time world governments are all fighting with each other over pointless shit, did not work together, and the US government in particular not only did nothing but instead spread lies that allowed it to not be contained, to arrive on cruise ships released by fucking political pull, and spread like wildfire in the country.

As icing on the cake this moron leader disbanded the teams who knew how to work on this in 2018, ignored the runbooks, and put the president's moron son in charge of responses that were not only laughable but totally counterproductive.

Sorry. Those trillions of dollars down the drain is the complete and final responsibility of one Donald Trump and his less than worthless Rethuglican cronies. Their lies, inaction, and malicious response has directly cost this country trillions of dollars and as of this afternoon 78,397 dead people.

Yes, I do believe Elwar that you would have done a great job. Really, I do. But this is what the people of the US wanted, and this is what they get. They can deal with it.
