I am coming to the conclusion that in the future it may be best to be able to defend your home/property yourself. I could either buy vast acreage and build a fortress, or buy an island that is easier to protect as the only people coming will be coming by boat...which can be defended against.

you know there are these things called "aircraft" that make a lot of traditional defenses useless.
1142  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Elon musk is for crypto or just for attention to boost Tesla, SpaceX? on: May 08, 2021, 11:01:18 AM
i think hes just having fun. and the doge phenomenon is fun to play with especially when you dont really care about money (to a point anyway).

sorta like hes testing doge like he tests rockets. beat it, test to destruction (or success) and learn what you can. then apply anything applicable to the real deal.. bitcoin.

of course being in the media for this doesnt hurt his companies either.

got my doge sells lined up on an exchange, should be fun tonight on SNL.
1143  Other / Meta / Re: {LIST}of the Merit Sources asking for more smerit. New Round. on: May 08, 2021, 10:55:18 AM
The current sources have already raised the rates for evaluating posts, it is already rare that anyone throws 1 merit per post, at least 2, 4, or even more.

Rare? I send 1 merit/post almost half of the time (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;u=359716), even though i focus on specific board/topic without being too generous.

same here. 90+ percent of mine are 1 merit sends as i try to spread it out as much as possible. i think the most ive given out was 3 or 4 (rare, those) except for a couple fat finger sends.

Nice shiny new Gretsch 5 piece added to studio. Thank you bitcoin.

I have no idea what a "Gretsch 5 piece" is (thought it was the drumset first but that has nine pieces so whatever it is, congrats!) but if it makes you happy, I'm happy for you.
It's so nice seeing and hearing about people being able to do what ever they want instead of having to wait for the next paycheck, or taking a loan or just not do it because no money.

in drum kit you only counts the drums themselves, not cymbals and such.

nice setup sirazimuth. is that a fender precision bass on the right?

At least some of us can be less mad at [REDACTED] in regards to that ideological position, even though I was not making any claim about your ideology but instead your wanting to post off topic shit in order to edumacate us in ways that you believe that your shitcoin is supposedly related to bitcoin because you have been making more bitcoin from it blah blah blah.

some peeps work jobs to make money to buy btc. some mine btc directly. and some peeps mine whatever coin makes the most per watt and buy bitcoin with the proceeds. i see little difference.

personally i found [REDACTED]s explanations as to btc difficulty vs price as a functions of power temporarily being diverted from straight up btc mining in power limited farms interesting.

disclosure: i mine shitcoins on gpus/fpgas and trade for btc. small scale, i dedicate one 20 amp circuit (and only draw 15 amps max from it to follow the 80% rule) to my mining and thats it. so profit per watt is important, as the more profit per watt the moar btc i get by trading whatever crap im mining.

stacking sats is stacking sats. however you do it.

hooray for me

i got picked for a 6700XT (sapphire)

now i gotta read up on if its actually any good at anything. wanted a 3070/80/90 but beggars cant be choosers.

I want to say they only do like 47mh or so.  I don't even select the 6700, 6800, or 6900 series.  Of course that being said I have one 6700 and one 6800.  Also I was once again not selected but I'm glad at least two people here got selected today.

yeah i rarely picked the 6xxx series before but having not ever won a thing in the shuffle ive since started to include them.

mid 40s for eth is fine (well depends on power). i am building new game rig too so it wont be wasted either way, at least until i (hopefully) get a better one for the game rig.

i have sigs turned off forum wide. in fact most all forums im on i disable sigs as they just waste space and most of the time are actually annoying wit those ridiculous colors and fonts etc.

avatars are still on for now as theyre an easy way to find a particulars persons post when scrolling. but any animated avatar get the user ignored instantly.

if i want moving content in my monitor ill turn on the telly. when i read i want static images and sensible fonts etc.
1149  Other / Politics & Society / Re: [POLL] What is the best covid-19 conspiracy? on: May 06, 2021, 03:13:16 AM
But yeah, Bill Gates, 5G, microchip implant, and all that stuff is by far my favorite.
Oh, that's not a conspiracy. I've been personally injecting 5G microchips in to all my colleagues. I couldn't get a decent WiFi signal in the OR, you see.

have you tried pfizers 5G nanobots? i hear they are the best.
1150  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: May 05, 2021, 11:25:56 AM
I once had 50M dogecoins  Shocked

sheit

I once had 1200 ETH :/

I once had 3 BTC :/

OT: dumping old doge from way back and converting to btc with a smile right now. sorry for mentioning that "other" coin WOers. ill try not to name that coin again here.

and BHphoto tells by I can buy a 3070 aorus

I stumble on the email perfect timing and I am clicking link in under 30 seconds and fuck you sold out.
My timing to find the email was basically perfect my clicking to buy was basically spot on and yet sold out.

you can see the unstuck and out of stock notices below

but I was on the website in about the time of 8:59:35 which is pretty much perfect.

So a shitty way to end the day.

well did you at least score the dress for your wife (or for yourself, no judging here)?

btw im zero for like 30 entries in the shuffle. starting to be a time waster waiting for that "you have not been selected" email but at least its delivered by like 9:30ish pm (EST) lately, one was like 11 pm at night. had to set an alarm to check my mail for the results.

worst part? im want it for my VR game build as much as mining. ive still got my 1080tis; looks like they will have to do for gaming till card production starts ramping up and miners stop just buy pallets of gpus off the factory docks. business is business after all.

well its a dream anyway.
1152  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Best Way to Carry Your Seed When Traveling Or Moving Abroad? on: May 02, 2021, 08:50:46 PM
I heard about yubikey but what happens if its lost or stops working though?

its recommended you buy several (well at least two) and register each of them with the services you use as so to have at least one backup as any of them will work at that point... and since trezors can be configured as as a yubikey a trezor counts as a backup. with the trezor in yubikey mode it still uses seed words so if your trezor dies or gets lost you can restore the seed to a new trezor and it will function as the same yubikey.
1153  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: IRS now wants to Hack Hardware Wallets on: May 02, 2021, 02:23:05 PM
the irs doesnt need private keys or the seed to achieve their main objective; all the need is a list of addy you control. at that point they have all the info they need as they can then monitor those addys.
Imagine they had an 8yo seed which was used with coin control ever since it's been generated. Having the seed means knowing its entire history and, moreover, you now know all this history is of one single person's finance. It's their wet dream..

yeah, with the seed thats the icing on the cake. yes the seed give far far more info into the history. who wants transactions you did 10 years ago scrutinized even if you did something totally legal (goat porn is legal right?).

i can build an open source trezor from the published schematics and BOM. and compile the code. so hard to hide a backdoor there at least.

I heard that Biden is gearing up for a $6 trillion additional spending plan, which is conveniently named as the "American Families Plan". Obviously not all of this amount can be sourced from printing banknotes alone. Some of it needs to come from taxing successful people. The long term capital gains tax for the highest slab is about to touch 60% in cities such as LA and Portland. I don't understand why the successful people still want to remain in the United States. Is it that hard to renounce your citizenship and move to some Caribbean country?

to do that you 1st have to pay a one time "exit tax" on basically your entire net worth. that may or not be worth it to some.

they could get those addys from ledger (trezor etc) servers now if they tried which is much easier.

all the more important to run your own full node for your hardware/software wallets and use that for your transactions. then only you know the addys.
1155  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Best Way to Carry Your Seed When Traveling Or Moving Abroad? on: May 02, 2021, 12:29:24 PM
I think it is very risky if we bring a piece of paper that says a list of hardware wallets abroad, if someone finds the paper then it will be likely to be subject to customs because it has brought it to a different country. I think it's safer to keep a list of your hardware wallets on the internet such as Google Drive, DropBox, MediaFire etc.

trezor has modes where you can use it like a yubikey for 2FA and as a password manager, so you could list them as that on your declaration form and technically not be lying.

of course anyone that sees the device itself would know what it is.

to send the hardware wallet itself i would probably have a friend mail it to me later. wipe it in case it gets confiscated and then just restore it (after reflashing the firmware in case it was compromised in transit)
1156  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Best Way to Carry Your Seed When Traveling Or Moving Abroad? on: May 02, 2021, 12:15:44 PM
There are many ways to store the seeds, I send them to my friends in the email message box or social media. Before I send it I will change a few characters that only I know.
Another way is I send a message in the Saved section of my Telegram account.
If you don't need a cryptocurrency, you don't need to care about the seed chain.

this is the worst possible way to store the seed and the "change a few character that only i know" is next to worthless. might as well publish it on a billboard for all the security it gives.

So I read an article last night, saying that Nvidia was re-nerfing the 3060's.  I hadn't followed this super closely since none were available to buy, but I think my understanding was this:
 - They came from the factory nerfed for mining.
 - They accidently released a driver update that didn't have the nerfification applied, and tried to retract it, but ooops, too late - it's out in the wild and everybody downloaded it to bypass the nerf.
 - Now they plan to release all new GPUs with another update that re-nerfs the boards.

So my question is, can we all still just re apply that accidental driver update to bypass again?  I know nothing of modding or updating GPUs yet, I'm not messing with the rig I bought unless I have to.  Just leaving everything running as is.  But I am curious for these future boards.  Will we be able to override them?

seems like they will prevent that. heres an article from anandtech explaining it a bit. a small quote below.

Quote
In short, NVIDIA has tweaked future RTX 3060 cards to require this driver (or newer), which will prevent them from using older drivers that can bypass NVIDIA’s hash limiter. As a result, RTX 3060 cards shipping starting in mid-May will once again be fully locked down against running Ethereum at full (native) speed.

1158  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: banks and if they allow buying bitcoin on: May 02, 2021, 01:51:32 AM
banks will continue to always decline cryptocurrency purchase because its against their policy. they see cryptocurrency as a competitor which shortchanges them thats why they dont allow by standing under the guise of volatility and unregulations. the best way to buy is to use p2p on any good exchange like binance.

USA here. some banks do.

many here have long bought and sold btc with bank accounts. i linked coinbase in 2013 and gemini in 2019 to mine and they have NEVER asked me any questions.

ive spoken to the branch manager, she knew a surprising amount about bitcoin. i got the impression she may own some and use coinbase as she knew all about coinbase crashing under loads and such.

this may not help the jakesun64 as he is in canada but i wanted to add some clarification.
1159  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Best Way to Carry Your Seed When Traveling Or Moving Abroad? on: May 02, 2021, 12:08:48 AM
I wrote my wallet password and security phases in my daily notebook and when I started to travel then I keep my notebook in my luggage. Though it's a dangerous because when I would lost my luggage them what would be happened?

important stuff like that goes on carry on luggage or your person only, never put it in checked baggage where TSA pokes around in it. as well as bags going missing of course.
