Just go with "4 March, 2012" so no one gets annoyed or ambigued.

is that two-thousand-and-twelve or twenty-twelve?
1882  Economy / Speculation / Re: $5.5 today!? on: January 02, 2012, 07:18:58 AM
What's funny is that a lot of people haven't been paying attention to bitcoin. The people that looked last week saw $3, and the next time they're going to look it's going to be $6 and be like WTF?!.  Cheesy

12-18-11: $3
12-25-11: $4.2? (too lazy to look at charts)
1-1-12: $5.4 right now
1-8-12: $6.6?

WTF? As if your 'guess the price on (date format that only makes sense in the USA)' wasn't bad enough , now you've gone back to mid last century and decided 2-digit years are a good idea again?
You Date-format troll!

12-18-11 clearly means 2012-11-18
and 12-25-11 is obviously 2012-11-25

wtf? dumbass? you're from the future?

yes dumbass, i have all the charts for 2012 - 2043 sitting here on my desk.
problem?

1884  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Question. How large is the Block chain now on Disk? on: January 02, 2012, 02:26:28 AM
If it were me, I would allocate 2.5 GB to the vanilla Bitcoin client and its copy of the block chain. That should be more than enough for at least one year.

i'm going to take a guess and say we'll pass 2.5 GB during the next 6 months.
1885  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 2 blocks within ~2 seconds? on: January 01, 2012, 12:40:00 PM
Blockexplorer says 20 seconds, I don't think this will be a problem.

yeah, that's the time that each miner stamped their block with, but in reality they poppped up on bitcoin monitor in much closer proximity.

anyway, good to know that the 2nd one of these is valid and was built on that first one.

imagine if it was the same person who found 2 blocks one after the other... what a bonus.
1886  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / 2 blocks within ~2 seconds? on: January 01, 2012, 12:15:21 PM
last 2 blocks look like they were found within just a few seconds of each other... what's the chance that the 2nd of this pair is invalid and will need to be re-done?

If anyone asks, I really am into gay midgets - they're so hot.

even though there's a bit of joking going on, in all seriousness people trying this trick should be very careful that the actual porn they're saving is 100% legal in their area.

there are so many tiny little rules that you may find yourself in trouble even for seemingly innocent looking pics.

for example, did you know in australia you can get in trouble for child porn, if the 18+ woman's tits are too small?

...I told you so.

what if someone mis-quotes you? Wink
1891  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Secret wallet on: January 01, 2012, 09:18:19 AM
This reminds me of the best way to use TrueCrypt's hidden partition trick:

Put gay porn or pics of yourself naked on the outer partition - anything that is embarrassing (to give a plausible reason for encrypting it) but both harmless (aside from embarrassment) and 100% legal.

there are many reasons for encrypting less embarrassing documents... for example source code that you've developed that you want to keep out of the hands of the competition for as long as possible.

even things like 'lists of available domain names worth registering' would be best kept encrypted until the time comes to actually register them.

i guess i'm the more cautious type, but my 'my documents' directory only has one file in it. A 20 gb truecrypt container.

i'm sure a lot of people who don't encrypt would feel quite violated if their pc was ever stolen.

for me, it would just mean buying a new pc, and asking a certain friend for that encrypted bdr i stashed at his place.

http://www.gnupg.org/ (you will need to know casascius' public key in order to do this)

casascius published his key in post #13: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=56023.msg667061#msg667061

as far as i know pgp and gpg are compatible... someone correct me if i'm wrong about that.
1893  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: EPIC fail on: January 01, 2012, 04:00:32 AM
Positive the hex box is checked.

damn.

sorry i don't think i can help further.
1894  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: EPIC fail on: January 01, 2012, 03:53:03 AM
Message I get when I search 0420. Scope is set to begin.

damn.

are you sure you were searching as a hex string, and not searching for '0420' as text?

woah, did you type this manually or run it through ucfirst() ?
1896  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: EPIC fail on: January 01, 2012, 03:31:28 AM
No I dont even know what that means. Looking at this text editor and all these rows of numbers and letters its starting to sink in that I might not be able to handle this.

firstly, choose Search->Count... from the main menu

choose "Hex String" and type 04 20 (the space should be inserted automatically, just type 0420).

make sure 'scope' is set to 'Begin'.

click OK

when i do that, i get a count of 684... meaning 684 possible private keys in my wallet.

extracting them manually (copy+paste) would take forever... like, more than a week (a very boring week).

actually, do you need these 600 btc at the moment? if you're a long-term holder it could be worth just starting a new wallet and keeping this 'bad' wallet in a safe place for a while in the hope that easier, user-friendly tools to fix it emerge later.

1897  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: EPIC fail on: January 01, 2012, 02:36:52 AM
I have the hex editor open and the wallet loaded. I may ask a few dumb questions along the way but if somebody can tell me what to do I CAN handle this.

have you searched/found the first occurrence of 04 20?
1898  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: EPIC fail on: January 01, 2012, 02:23:35 AM
I know what you mean. I have people ask me for help with computers and its often difficult explaining things to them. You can tell them 10 times but they dont understand like you do. Like when I was trying to find the location of my wallet.dat on ubuntu. I looked up the location and had the command ~/.bitcoin/wallet.dat but I still didnt know what to do with it. Would be nightmare trying to walk me through this. Especially on a OS I know nothing about. Its not impossible but I can understand why you dont want to.

Im going to be honest. Ive been fucking with this for days. I dont know what else to do. Im desperate. I would appreciate you taking a stab at it but Im sure you understand why I would rather do it myself. Ive spent all this money on equipment and had all this stuff running day and night for months. Its hard handing my wallet over to somebody on the forums. You said your way isnt the only way. What other options do I have? I would like to do everything I can before I hand over my wallet.

ninja, do you have a copy of pywallet?

you could follow casascius' instructions for finding the private keys in your wallet file just by using a simple hex editor:

http://www.chmaas.handshake.de/delphi/freeware/xvi32/xvi32.htm

doing that is almost certainly the slow way, because you'd be copying and pasting everything individually (and who knows how many keys are in your wallet), but at least you'd have the hex strings corresponding to your private keys.

open that program, load (a copy of) your wallet into it, and search for hex string 04 20. select the next 32 bytes after each one and choose clipboard->copy as hex string.

1899  Other / Off-topic / Re: My cristmas present: Burnt House on: January 01, 2012, 01:03:25 AM
No offense, but a house burned down down the street and I was able to walk in it, talk with the owners, etc. I could have taken a hundred pics of it, myself, etc if I felt like it. Why is this enough to get bitcoins on a forum? Is everyone here braindead?

Hahahaha.. Let me paraphrase for Matthew..

"Merry Christmas, go fuck yourself!"

Personally Im sorry to hear about the fire, the pictures alone are enough proof for me, because if you take the time to look at what is being taken, its obvious the OWNER is taking the photos and not a random dipshit like matthew taking pictures of the local arson fires he sets for his scrapbook

I may act random, but I'm not really random. If I was truly random I would not be able to sustain this human form.

Also, when you're done dragging your knuckles read the point of the post again and you'll see that it has merit. Just because you're gullible doesn't mean anyone else has to be.

for what it's worth, when i first read the thread i immediately ran the images through tineye and found 0 matches.

hehe, i said 'matches'.
1900  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Secret wallet on: January 01, 2012, 12:55:36 AM
1 - Generate a set of private keys with high quality entropy
2 - Hash your password+a numeric string to an SHA256 hash
3 - XOR the hash from step 2 with each of the keys from step 1 to get your new private keys
4 - Repeat steps 2-4 an arbitary number of times to create multiple hidden wallets
5 - Pay small amounts into all your addresses
6 - If cooerced, give the password for a secret wallet with hardly any coins in it

Anyone got plausible attacks against this scheme?

i was going to say '$5 wrench' but i think you covered that scenario. EDIT - and it looks like fornit beat me to it anyway.

as an alternative, you could create a truecrypt hidden volume. put a low-value wallet in the outer area and your high-value wallet in the hidden area.
