All these calculations are worthless.  You forget you can sell your miner.  In any case, an s1 today is still profitable with decent electricity rates with undervolting (I<m assuming it still it, maybe someone knows for real, im tired dont feel like doing some math).  also my miner heats my garage/house, so you have to factor that in too.

Also its a lot more fun than a simple garage heater, which costs money for heat.
1942  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Mining hardware in a car ? on: December 24, 2015, 02:32:45 PM
well it would have to be well built...i mean all the vibration and the bumps, etc.  Plus you would need an extra battery or something, I suppose it would keep the alternator on too much.
1943  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Beginning of mining and hardware investment. on: December 24, 2015, 01:37:33 AM
I just looked closely at my electric bill and my kwh charge is actually .07257 and a .03194 delivery charge with a few other little taxes here and there. The .14kwh rate I just got from a local Google search. So my rate is .10 per kwh.
Even starting out I just don't want to use something with a smaller hash rate, just like you wouldn't go NASCAR racing in a golf cart.

Thats not really how it works. Its about how much you pay $/gh. And how much you pay for your electricity.

So with your .10 per kWh on a S7, you would profit for 6 months, having paid 40% back of the unit + PSU, then spend as much as you earn for the next few, and then the halving halve your BTC return and you're left with units worth little and 600 USD loss per unit.  8% Diff raise, stable BTC price.

Well not really, because you sell your miner after.  So you sell it for 1000$ maybe, there is 400 profit.  and if btc price goes up, then you make more.
1944  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Here's a converter that will turn your 120 volt US plug into 220 volt plug. on: December 24, 2015, 01:34:12 AM
No...no....I would not do that.....a 220v line needs two 110v lines.  It doesnt matter whether the little chinese fire box outputs 100000v, what matters is that your antminer is pulling about 1300w or more.  So what really matters is what wire you have going from the plug to the breaker box, including all other appliances/things that are plugged into that circuit.  So lets say you have a standard 14 wire, with a 15A breaker..you could put an antminer on it, but you are cutting it close to 80% load, which is pretty much the maximum always on load for a 15a circuit.  Better be safe !  As for chinese made stuff....I wouldnt trust that stuff unless it has real certification, idk what they are, like CE or something like that.  my2cents
1945  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why even use BitCoins? (read the post!) on: December 22, 2015, 04:36:15 PM
Cryptocurrency, bitcoin included, is great to buy goods and services on a global level.  If I am canadian, buying from china for example.  I have to convert to usd, then send it, then they convert it back to their local currency.  with btc its simpler and the fees are lower.  transaction times are fast compared to a wire transfer.  Also its peer to peer, no passing through a bank or other intermediary.  The block chain tech is useful for record keeping and it is safe, secure, fast and innovative.  I have bought many things, usually with dogecoin as transaction times are much faster.  Those that say its just a store of value are wrong.  Bitcoin derives its value from its usage and how useful it is.
1946  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Going solo at ckpool on: December 22, 2015, 02:52:18 PM
Id recommend Kano.is pool, stats are fast and good.  pool runs great.
1947  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Need help with my PSU for Antminer S3 on: December 22, 2015, 02:26:32 PM
yeah since its not connected to the motherboard....the psu wont turn on !
1948  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S7 is available at bitmaintech.com with 4.86TH/s, 0.25J/GH on: December 22, 2015, 02:22:06 PM
My S7 arrived on Black Friday (USA delivery).  A few weeks later I got a bill from Fedex for a Customs Duty of 2.6%.  I was under the impression all of the taxes and duties I've seen mentioned in this forum were for people receiving these outside of the US.  Is this legit?  Go ahead and pay the $50?

Thanks!

hmm well they messed up if they send a bill AFTER giving you the miner....I say forget the bill until they really start bothering you to pay.  You will probably get some automated phone call in a while.
1949  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [5 PH] Kano CKPool (kano.is) from the cgminer devs [0.9% PPLNS] on: December 22, 2015, 01:57:22 AM
Ok, thanks for the info!  much appreciated
1950  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [5 PH] Kano CKPool (kano.is) from the cgminer devs [0.9% PPLNS] on: December 22, 2015, 01:23:53 AM
Hi guys.  I just turned my s7 to the pool ヽ༼◕ل͜◕༽ノ and I have a smallish question.  I set min diff to 4096 but I'm sure its supposed to be x2 or x4 higher, I know the pool adjusts it automatically but i've been on it for over 5 hours and it hasnt.  So question = what diff should I manually set, or put it to 0 ?
1951  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S7 is available at bitmaintech.com with 4.86TH/s, 0.25J/GH on: December 21, 2015, 08:26:03 PM
I switched to Kano pool, looks good, I like that stats update really fast, and you have lots of them.  UNFORTUNATELY, I had to change settings in the antminer batch 8, big mistake, as it took many "soft reboots" and 2 actual "reboots" to get it at 4720ghs, with good hw.  I also see lots of X's for the chips, but thats just a bad reading or something because the hashrate is good and it goes away after 5 minutes.

Note to self:  dont ever change anything in the settings ever again.  ever.
1952  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer S7 Bitmain Power Supply Issue on: December 21, 2015, 02:53:51 PM
you need over 200v, or else it will turn on but will not power the antminer s7.
1953  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitfury: "16nm... sales to public start shortly" on: December 18, 2015, 03:03:31 PM
You may be right.  After all, they will need to cash out at some point
1954  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitfury: "16nm... sales to public start shortly" on: December 18, 2015, 02:09:00 PM
Just when I was hoping difficulty increases would stabilize a little bit

 ROFLMAO!!!!!

 Not this year.
Perhaps middle of NEXT year, with a drop at the halfing for a short while.

You've OBVIOUSLY not been paying attention to "new gear in production" or "new gear available SOON" announcements.

They have been having these announcements all the time. Wasn't KNC suppose to come out with some 0.05Gh/W miners also in 2014?

Like Cointerra in 15Q1.

Bitfury has its own PR weirdness which is why we have to be cautious with promises. Talk is cheap when you're paying close to 7 figures a year for PR.

Bitfury will not be listed on the NYSE....going public means having top notch and clean operations and finances.....verified finances.  Reporting obligations.  Regulation by SEC and others...methinks Bitfury is full of crap, and = "oh invest in us, we got all these new products, hype hype hype such wow, and you'll cash out and make a killing when we get listed on the NYSE, give us money money".  my 2cents, I smell the bullshit from here.
1955  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Next Generation ASIC's - How do we recycle the past? on: December 18, 2015, 02:05:41 PM
You could always mine some low diff altcoin with the s1, and hope the price jumps in the future.  Other than that....what if btc price goes up ?  then your small amounts of btc are worth something....so dont mine at a loss, but why not if the profit is small ?  Also, you may consider to mine solo (solo ckpool for example) and have a little lottery thing going on.  I sold all my old miners, but I did keep a usb block eruptor for posterity.
1956  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain S7 + 1300W Power Supply? on: December 18, 2015, 02:02:31 PM
It can be done with the 1300w, see dogie review of the antminer s7.  he plugs only 2 pci per board with the 1300w evga.  but this voids the warranty I think.  (touching the machine voids the warranty lol).  Else get the 1600w evga, its a beast and it has all the pci cables you need, but its expensive.  good thing it has the 10 year warranty too.  Other than that, you have to get a server psu (loud) on 220v.
1957  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Big banks creating Bitcoin alternative on: December 18, 2015, 01:20:13 AM
I think its more about the blockchain, they are seeing if they can use it in their business.  for example a lot of OTC contracts are traded, swaps, etc.  these are cleared by a clearinghouse and you have a lot of credit risk, counter party risk, etc.  But with the blockchain...it could change a lot of things for them.  I dont think they care about bitcoin.
1958  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: But coin today a shitshow - an UMNITGATED disaster the last few days on: December 18, 2015, 01:13:53 AM
yeah its frustrating...something must be done.  But then again, you must pay at least 0.0001 btc or something like that as a fee.  so 5 cents.
1959  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S7 is available at bitmaintech.com with 4.86TH/s, 0.25J/GH on: December 18, 2015, 01:10:39 AM
Speaking of duties and fees, taxes and such.  I paid 330$ cad to DHL...Im filling a CBSA informal adjustment request form to the customs agency and I hope i'll get 2/3 of that refunded.  You can also dispute the Merchandise value that bitmain put on.  I will do that too, as they put 100$ usd or so more than I paid.  I'll let you guys know what happens, (probably in a few weeks...months) if you are interested, this is for people in Canada (im in quebec so i paid quebec tax too).
1960  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitfury: "16nm... sales to public start shortly" on: December 17, 2015, 07:32:41 PM
Anybody else think that current antminer s7 / avalon production is bumping the diff a lot, and that this is hurting big time bitfury's profits and older gear profitability....I'm just saying, knowning how this world works, I wouldnt be the least surprised if these anouncements are made only to make people delay or suspend their own purchases or data center plans for bitcoin, to make them "wait" or rethink their own profitability....so that the diff rises a little less and bitfury makes a little more money, for a little longer.
