2121  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is owning bitcoin a crime? on: March 30, 2018, 09:57:19 AM
The article doesn't even state that owning Bitcoin is a crime, it just mentions that it's used often for criminal activity on the internet.
This isn't even newsworthy, everything that's mentioned in the article is stuff that has been written down before in other articles. Not exactly new stuff..

They will probably use this to impose tighter regulations though.
2122  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bank Hackers Set up "Enormous Network" to Mine Bitcoin for Laundering Money on: March 29, 2018, 02:02:09 PM
You know what I find strangest about all of this? That bank employees are able to download these malicious files while they're connected to the company network.
Time for those sysadmins to put some more restrictions on those people if the damage could be that huge.

Criminals using Bitcoin to launder money, what else is new... They'll eventually switch over to something that's more anonymous.
2123  Economy / Services / Re: I can make a Bitcoin-clone, is anybody need it? on: March 29, 2018, 01:46:54 PM
It can't hurt to try and offer this service, you can start right away on this forum. I'm sure there is at least some demand for this.
Then have a trusted member review your work, by providing a free example.

I'm not saying that you will get a lot of customers, but you'll never know if you don't try.
2124  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Is it possible to have one wallet for all cryptos? on: March 29, 2018, 01:18:48 PM
One option could be to install every wallet separately onto a very large USB drive. I mean, you're not having one wallet, but you do have a way to access them all.
Besides, you're not going to use every crypto that's out there, it's just not possible from a practical point of view.

I would also not be surprised if there are going to be more hardware wallets that will have support for maybe 50 coins in the future.
2125  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: The idea that will make the world a better place on: March 29, 2018, 12:56:04 PM
75 thousand is not enough to make the world a better place. If you want to make it a better place, then invest in organizations that help raise awareness to people. If you are going to spend money on charity, the money will fade away eventually and your fingerprint will follow. However, if you persuade people to donate, they will have lots of money. It has always been about people whether they want to help or not. That's how to make the world a better place bit by bit.

Why would 75k not be enough to make the world a better place? With that kind of money you can already make meaningful investments in small scale projects that make a big difference for entire communities.
You can look into micro-financing people who want to start a business in third world countries for example. I like that approach better that just donating x amount to a big charity organization.

Whatever you choose, pick something that's preferably small-scale and something that's transparent about their finances.
2126  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Request: Blockchain Project Promotion Ideas, Experience & Best Practices? on: March 29, 2018, 12:24:36 PM
1. What is the best way to promote our project to you? what medium makes you pay attention to new ideas?
2. Where are you getting your crypto-related information?
3. What are the promotional best practices in your opinion?
4. What channels of communication you use to get that daily crypto-juice?

1. I personally look at some well-known Bitcoin news websites almost daily. Usually reading TheMerkle and Coindesk. I've also found some exciting new projects through Steemit.

2. See above response

3. I don't care much for traditional advertising, since I'm running adblocker all the time. I do enjoy reading in-depth pieces, even if they are purely promotional.

4. Already answered this

You're basically asking the same question 3 times...
2127  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: If your coin increased 40% - 200% in value over night. What would you do? on: March 29, 2018, 10:57:41 AM
Depends on what coin we're talking about... If it's a project that I believe in, then I might be tempted to hold onto those coins indefinitely and sell very small amounts from time to time.
But if it's something more questionable, then I'd probably sell them all at once. Not that I regularly invest in projects I'm not 100% behind, but sometimes I do purchase random coins for testing.

I've also had better results than a 200% increase, so it's not that it would be that strange to see.
2128  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Looking for a list of best bitcoin cassinos according to their users on: March 29, 2018, 10:43:34 AM
In this thread a lot of people gave a review of their most favorite gambling site: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1417922.0
You're looking for real reviews, right? It's probably best if you just browse in this forum to find some real reviews.

I can definitely recommend Crypto-Games though. Payouts happen instantly and I've withdrawn a lot of coins there over a period of 3 years.
They accept a number of different altcoins and their games are provably fair.
2129  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Best VPN Providers that are accepting Bitcoin and others Cryptocurrencies on: March 29, 2018, 10:35:37 AM
While you make a good point that you shouldn't be using Paypal to buy VPN service if you want to stay anonymous, that's not why most people are using VPN.
Most people just use it to circumvent geo-restrictions for media services.

In those cases it doesn't really matter that much that you're anonymous, you're just using a VPN to access Netflix or Hulu from abroad.
2130  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Would you fight for satoshi? on: March 29, 2018, 09:33:54 AM
Many companies, banks and goverments are lobbying against bitcoin, while praising the blockchain technology Sathoshi invented. Soon they will use the open source software to develop their own blockchains, without ever expressing gratitude to satoshi or the bitcoin community. Isn't that stealing?

Stealing? No, since it's free and open-source software, I wouldn't call it stealing if people are using chunk of the code to create their own blockchain.
The original Bitcoin core client was released under the MIT license, which is pretty permissive.

Where do you get the idea that it would be stealing if banks or companies make their own implementation of something that's released as FOSS software?
Thoughts like that go fully against the principles of FOSS.
2131  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: The consequences of gambling on: March 28, 2018, 02:40:56 PM
I'm sure that gambling has had some consequences for me personally, even though I think they are pretty small.
You could say that the money spent on gambling could have been spent on something more meaningful, so I'd definitely say that having less money is a consequence.

Other than that, I'm not particularly impacted by gambling, it's just something I do for fun.
I don't gamble more than I can afford an I manage to hold myself to any limits I set.
2132  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Purchasing biggest crypto exchanges by banks on: March 28, 2018, 12:33:02 PM
Do you know examples of banks buying cryptocurrency exchanges? This is not and never will be. Bankers will not destroy their business with their own hands. Wall Street has been present on the cryptocurrency market since the appearance of futures contracts. Maybe the collapse of prices is their game.

Well, Circle just bought Poloniex a while ago, Circle is backed by Goldman Sachs. That's just one example of banks (in)directly investing in cryptocurrency exchanges.

Then there's also the largest Japanese bank that's launching its own crypto exchange, so they're definitely interested in getting into cryptocurrency trading.

2133  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: poker stars raised their rake .. again on: March 27, 2018, 12:07:27 PM
PokerStars has been going towards to being a more traditional online casino for a while now. Not only have they added a bunch of casino games like slots, blackjack and so on they have a sportsbook now too. They have also added a lot of poker games that seem more like luck games than skill games. This makes me think poker has become less profitable and thus they are starting to tax it. I don't know any numbers so this is just a hunch.

I don't like this direction they are going to but then again I gave up with online poker a while ago.

They are adjusting to the market it would seem. Poker isn't nearly as popular as it was a few years ago, people don't want to spend hours at the poker table anymore.
I think it probably has to do with the fact that they want to keep some retention on the newbie players.

Newbies would get tired of playing long games, so it's more profitable to invest in trying to combine poker with more fast-paced casino games.
You see it with the addition of those spin & go tournaments for example.
2134  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: JUST TRANSFERED 20K USD AND BANK CHARGED ME $700 !!!! on: March 27, 2018, 11:22:40 AM
I have noticed this too actually.  I mean, how long did it take for the security chips to make it on the credit/debit cards and for stores to actually accept them?  It took the longest time ever.  And not only that but people where bitching the whole time too because it was a minor inconvenience to be told that you have to insert the chip rather than swipe.

Things are always slower in terms of progress here in the good ole US. Sad

It's a total disgrace. And when you realise how pathetic bank transfers there are and how much ATM use costs you also realise that BTC serves a useful purpose that simply isn't called for in Europe.

In the EU there's masses and masses of innovation when it comes to banking. It's getting faster and more convenient all the time. It's still built on the same old crud of course but at least they attempt to be convenient.

Yeah I can't really complain about banking here in my country (Belgium), with SEPA it's just cheap and easy to send payments to any country in Europe.
Also banking + bitcoin is pretty well developed here too. I can just go to a Dutch exchange (Bitonic), pay with my debit card and receive Bitcoins instantly, without any transfer costs.

Same for cashing out Bitcoins, I can send my Bitcoin to a Dutch exchange and have the money on my bank account the same day.

Idea is nice and we will add it. Thanks. We don't really need code examples... Smiley

Code example was a bit of a backhanded response to Joel, all in good fun though.
Not intended as an actual coding example of course Tongue

I see you've already added it, thanks for that!
2136  Economy / Gambling / Re: ★ Crypto-Games.net ★ 10 coins ★ Since 2014 ★ 7 games ★ 103 ETH Jackpot ★ on: March 26, 2018, 01:55:49 PM
It would be easy enough to disable the cursor over the button via css (cursor: not-allowed;) while the timer is running.
Wait..a second..Don't want to coach you with the HTML/CSS basics but adding cursor : not-allowed just adds that cross icon overlay on hover of the button and doesn't actually disable the button.To disable the button,an additional attribute "disabled" should be added to the button tag programatically. Like so

<button type="button" disabled>Claim</button>

Sorry Lutpin,you know I'm not a fan of posting such stuff in the official threads.I hope you'll forgive me. Tongue

I'm not a web developer and I was just referring to the visual aspect with that Tongue

Should probably be something like this:
Code:
<div class="buttons">
  <a class="button" href="#">Click enabled</a>
  <a class="button disabled" href="#">Click disabled</a>
</div>

Code:
.button.disabled {
  opacity: 0.65;
  cursor: not-allowed;
}

Might not be a web dev, but can use Google Wink
2137  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Does ethics count in winning/gambling. on: March 26, 2018, 11:33:09 AM
Ethics matter everywhere, you aren't ethical if you just pick and choose the circumstances where you decide to be ethical or not.
You are either practice good morals or you do not, there's no in-between, at least not according to me.

The same with gambling, for me it would not be okay to cheat, whether you're playing with friends or at a big casino.

Now I do see a gray area if you're just using skill to get an extra edge in the game.
Counting cards in blackjack is an example.
2138  Economy / Gambling / Re: ★ Crypto-Games.net ★ 10 coins ★ Since 2014 ★ 7 games ★ 103 ETH Jackpot ★ on: March 26, 2018, 10:25:17 AM
I have a suggestion to improve the faucet just a little bit, this shouldn't be too hard to implement if you think it would be useful enough.
It would be great if clicking the 'Claim' button was disabled for as long as the timer is still counting down.

Not that it happens a lot, but sometimes you just accidentally click it when you've already solved the captcha, but the timer is still running.
It would be easy enough to disable the cursor over the button via css (cursor: not-allowed;) while the timer is running.

2139  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Definitive List of Celebs [et al.] Embracing Bitcoin/Crypto w/Links (proof) on: March 26, 2018, 10:13:33 AM
John Oliver had an episode about crypto a while back, in it he showed a clip of a reporter asking Michael Keaton about Bitcoin.
Here's the clip with the correct time stamp: https://youtu.be/g6iDZspbRMg?t=80

So you can add Michael Keaton to your list, I think that this counts as him 'embracing Bitcoin' ;-)

2140  Economy / Economics / Re: Cost of Living Comparison on: March 23, 2018, 04:54:25 PM
I should really consider moving to Prague, it would save me a ton. I actually don't think I would mind living there, always liked Prague when I visited.
My city doesn't seem to have too high of a cost of living, but it's not exactly cheap either.

The only things my city has going for it is the good, cheap beer and relatively cheap rent. It's also very centrally located, so travel is cheap and easy.
