2301  Economy / Economics / Re: Miami mayor considers investing in bitcoin with public funds on: January 28, 2021, 05:42:18 AM
here's an interesting update from the city of miami.

no word on direct investment yet, but in reaction to the recent faketoshi/whitepaper controversy, they started hosting the whitepaper on the city's website: https://www.miamigov.com/Government/City-Officials/Mayor-Francis-Suarez/Bitcoin-White-Paper

is CSW gonna threaten to sue them now too? Cheesy

Wow!!! This is like an open endorsement for Bitcoin from the city of Miami. So can we say with 100% surety that Francis X. Suarez (the Republican mayor of Miami) is pro-Bitcoin? I would like endorsements from more Republican politicians, as the Democrats are moving in the opposite direction (with Janet Yellen threatening legal action against Bitcoin). I am not expecting much from RINOs such as Murkowski and Romney, but GOP should come in support for cryptocurrency if Yellen and her cronies are planning a crackdown.
2302  Economy / Economics / Re: Russian currency big problems on: January 27, 2021, 07:47:15 PM
Resource economy mixed with sanctions and technological degradation = the rebirth of a once competitive country into a militarized, embittered third world country, with a totalitarian regime, they are not able to really rule the country ... No need to compare a beautiful picture from a financial center in Moscow or St. Petersburg with life in Rostov, Syzran or Kaliningrad! According to official statistics (imagine how much in reality!?) 30% live below the poverty line. The incomes of the population are falling rapidly, the population is taking huge consumer loans, and its solvency is falling rapidly. Businesses stop, unemployment rises. After the imposition of sanctions,% of the presence in the EU gas market is reduced, entire sectors of the economy are falling apart, regions are dying out ... Mortality exceeds the birth rate, and the "indicators" of the population are still held up by a large flow of migrants. The prospects are even worse, they will soon have to be responsible for state terrorism (MH-17), crimes against Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, Syria, .... Therefore, the currency of such a state has no prospects.

All this is true, but the reason is not sanctions that were imposed in 2014. Even without the sanctions, Russian economy would have been in ruins right now. Back in 2014, they were overly dependent on the export of oil and natural gas. The price of these commodities declined by more than 50% in 2014, and on top of that the Russian monopoly in the most profitable market came under threat from American LNG and piped natural gas from Azerbaijan. They should have diversified away from the oil-based economy when the crude prices were above $100 per barrel. But the regime never bothered about that and as a result they are suffering now.
2303  Economy / Economics / Re: Vaccination Started in India | Impact over Indian Economy & World? on: January 27, 2021, 07:37:58 PM
India is not just vaccinating its own population, but also exporting the vaccine to other countries as well. A few days back, the Brazilian president thanked India for an emergency supply of 2 million doses of the vaccine. India has also provided large number of vaccine doses to all the neighboring countries (except Pakistan). By the end of this year, Indian manufactures will be producing more than 3 billion doses of the vaccine.

2304  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2021-01-13 BI - Man offers city $70M to dig up lost 7500 btc hard drive on: January 27, 2021, 06:24:35 PM
Perhaps that were the case if the hard drives were kept in a sterile environment. It may be a different story considering the dirt and water exposure from the dump, plus possibly getting crushed and run over by dump trucks and cranes. I've read in the article that he will bring the hard drive to data recovery specialists to rebuild it and have any the parts replaced if needed, but can the data be recovered once the pieces have been replaced to new ones?

Most of the landfills contain some amount of chemical and industrial waste as well. Even if parts are made of aluminium or plastic, they can get corroded in this environment. Data recovery agents may face difficulty in retrieving the data even if it is in a stable condition. If the hard drive is corroded, then I'd give it less than 0.0001% chance. I read that he is earning good amounts by charging anyone who wants to interview him. Why can't he stick to that business and leave the hard drive where it is right now?
2305  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: T20 and T20I cricket prediction and discussion on: January 27, 2021, 06:11:53 PM
Bravo was doing exceptionally well in the death overs and if the last season laid in the Chepauk then it could be a different story because CSK got the players to bowl in that slow conditions so I don't think CSK will remove the Bravo from their playing XI in this season.

Bravo is more of a bowling all-rounder and hit big sixes in the last few balls and he was match-winner for CSK on many occasions.

There is no doubt that Dwayne Bravo is one of the legends of T20 cricket. But similar to what happened with other West Indies players such as Chris Gayle and Andre Fletcher, age seems to have taken its toll on him. Now it is the turn of younger players such as Nicholas Pooran Shimron Hetmyer and Evin Lewis to take the legacy forward. 36-37 year olds may perform well in test cricket. But in T20 cricket, it gets tough for them. Even Indian players such as Dhoni, Kathik and Uthappa struggled in last year's IPL.
2306  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Test Cricket Prediction and Discussion Thread [self - mod] on: January 27, 2021, 06:01:54 PM
Rishab Pant's keeping is not that bad but his batting skills are surely better than Saha. Moreover, his past form do make him a strong contender for starting XI

Saha is 36 years old and he has only 1-2 years of international career left. That also should be considered while the slot of wicket keeper is decided. Very few of the teams go with a specialist keeper nowadays. The preference is for a keeper, who can bat as good as the others in the top/middle order. Pant is a good batsman, but he has made costly mistakes when he kept wickets. But my take is that his keeping skills will get better with experience.
2307  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: OMG !!!!! You BitCoin people were right. I wish I had bought back in March :( on: January 27, 2021, 01:28:17 PM
Don't worry, you're not the only one who experienced the same and feel regret because of the action that they did way back March.
Many investors also didn't bought at the bottom probably because of the doubts that is on their mind like "Bitcoin will not recover anymore" or "This is the start of the Bear Market" etc.

I myself didn't bought last March too not because I doubted it but because I don't have any funds to buy and I feel a bit of regret because of it and adjusted to that too that is why I'm always saving cash so that I can buy when Bitcoin went down again although I don't expect that it will go all the way to $3-4k again, at least I can buy at a lower price.

Now people are aware of this 4-year cycle, when Bitcoin undergo correction and then rebounds. Given these facts, I am skeptical on whether we will get the same level of correction that was witnessed during 2015-16 and 2018. Those who can hold on to their coins for 3-4 years will try their best not to sell them. So I agree with this post. Even if there is a correction, I don't expect the prices to fall to four-digits.
2308  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2021-01-20] Janet Yellen suggests 'curtailing' cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin on: January 27, 2021, 01:18:12 PM
I don't know what will happen, but tether and other centralized parts of the crypto scene are vulnerable to big government authoritarian policies much more so than bitcoin.  If one didn't have to worry about control freaks in government, things would be much better.

Stablecoins such as Tether are vulnerable to authoritarian action, because unlike the case with Bitcoin or Ethereum, they are not decentralized. The authorities can seize Tether assets and make that token completely worthless. And there will be big impact on the cryptocurrency market. If Tether is not safe, then none of the stablecoins are safe. Trading will come to a halt, especially in jurisdictions where fiat currency is not permitted for trading (such as China). And indications are that USDT will be the next target after XRP.
2309  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it possible to still make a good return from Bitcoin? on: January 27, 2021, 01:08:33 PM
The essential reason for Bitcoin's rebound starting in 2020 is that people are worried that the large amount of money printing and debt spending in countries around the world will cause the instability of the global monetary system, so in the next few years, the rate of return is still relatively high.

That is true, but still I would advice the new investors to wait for some more time. The indications that are coming from the new Biden administration are not very positive. Janet Yellen made a very controversial statement and Bitcoin immediately lost 10% of its value. So you can imagine how the market will react if Yellen and the rest of the reptilian overlords make any move against cryptocurrency. Better to wait and watch for a few more months rather than jumping in right now.
2310  Economy / Economics / Re: Food prices doubled this year on: January 27, 2021, 12:58:46 PM
This year's grain production has been severely affected by natural disasters and the epidemic. The global food production has been affected to a certain extent, so the supply is correspondingly reduced, and the demand is relatively stable, which has caused the increase in food prices.

Wheat production is stable and major producers such as Russia and Ukraine have reported harvests slightly below that from last year (78 million tons vs 86 million tons for Russia). Predictions were quite gloomy a few months back, but then improved weather conditions have helped the farmers. Same is the case with soybean and corn as well. There is no large scale decrease.
2311  Economy / Economics / Re: What We Should Learn From Elon Musk Influence on: January 27, 2021, 12:48:14 PM
I don't want to go off-topic, but previously scammers had used Elon Musk's Twitter account to promote scams. Check this:

https://www.theverge.com/22163643/twitter-hack-bitcoin-scam-july-2020-elon-musk

The hackers tried to push a crypto-based Ponzi scheme and a lot of unsuspecting users lost their money after clicking the link. Even before that, there were several attempts to use Elon's Twitter account for scams and I had posted a thread detailing it here:

2312  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Toronto women win jackpot lottery on: January 27, 2021, 11:41:42 AM
Of course,  that's just a coincidence, and there is no point in betting on the same number/numbers all the time. But, on the other hand, there's no point in changing the numbers either. Your probability of winning is always the same, so why not stick with the same numbers?

Nowadays, the winning numbers are picked by a computerized system, which makes sure that there is no bias with any of the combinations. So it is just pure luck and coincidence. Sticking with the same number or not is not going to change your luck. So rather than spending your valuable time in researching about the winning numbers, I would advise you to do your research on the odds of winning the jackpot. It will be different for different draws of the same lottery (based on rollovers and number of tickets sold).
2313  Economy / Economics / Re: Florida bank says it has closed Trump's accounts on: January 27, 2021, 11:29:09 AM
“Negative consequences” on the what? The price? Its “reputation”? Bitcoin’s main value proposition is censorship-resistance. ANYONE should use it without fear of being censored. I would like to see Trump use it.

In that case since Trump was using fiat currency for more than 7 decades, the price and reputation of the US Dollar should have been affected, right? Some of the users like slapper never fails to amuse me with their ridiculous logic. Trump was the president of the United States from 2016 to 2020 and any endorsement from him would be earth shattering for Bitcoin. But I know that the chances are very minimal.
2314  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Another insane win!! $ 1B mega million jackpot on: January 27, 2021, 11:19:11 AM
This money isn't that easy to hide especially if you already said it to other people and for sure he said it already to some people since we have an instinct that if we won a huge money, we tend to share it to other people or some relatives at least.

Either way, still congratulations for him and he is a very lucky bettor. I don't bet on lotteries because I believe that I will not win on it and it has a low chances of winning on it. Instead of putting it on lottery, I will just save it and invest into other assets

In some of the lotteries, there is no option for the jackpot winner to remain anonymous. As per the terms and conditions, the details of the winner will be made public. And these lotteries need this, as an advertisement. Only a minority of the games give you an option to remain anonymous. Therefore you may need to deal with the inundation of "born-again" relatives and friends for the initial few months. The question is how to deal with them. You are under no obligation to share even a penny with any of them. Be strict with this, because if you become soft then your winnings may vanish in a few years time. If you feel that there is someone who genuinely needs your help, then there is no problem in spending 1% or 2% of your winnings for that purpose. But for the rest, you need to be very strict.

2315  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Test Cricket Prediction and Discussion Thread [self - mod] on: January 27, 2021, 11:09:19 AM
Fawad Alam may score another test century today, almost one month after doing the same against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui. Nice to see at least one player other than Babar Azam scoring the runs. Their bowlers performed well during the first innings. So if they can get the lead to 100-150, then there is a very good chance of Pakistan winning the match. And that will enable Pakistan to promote themselves to the 5th position in the ICC World Test Championship points table.
2316  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: T20 and T20I cricket prediction and discussion on: January 27, 2021, 10:55:54 AM
Bravo got injured in the early stages of last IPL season that is why he got ruled out for few weeks but later in the stage, he was included and at that time CSK already lost their hope of getting into the qualifiers. I don't think he was injured after that so he will be completely fit to play for CSK.

Right now it will be premature to say whether Bravo will be a permanent fixture or not. CSK is already playing with so many players over the age of 37-38, and Bravo is another addition to that list. I am sure that during the upcoming auctions they will try hard to purchase some of the younger emerging players. Once we know the team roster for 2021, it will be possible to calculate the chances of players such as Bravo and Tahir.
2317  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin hits $40k on: January 26, 2021, 12:42:23 PM
We need to consider seriously about a possible market correction. The initial statements from Janet Yellen (Biden's nominee for United States Secretary of the Treasury) indicates that the current administration is going to be much more hostile to the cryptocurrencies when compared to the previous one. And this may have a negative impact on the investment from institutions. I won't be surprised if the prices go back to the levels we had before PayPal adoption.
2318  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: ODI cricket and general cricketing discussion [self - mod] on: January 26, 2021, 11:57:53 AM
You are right. The West Indies players are new. And their experienced players are very few. And we can see the results of the match without experienced players. The West Indies are losing in a very bad way. There is no good batsman in their team. It looks like they will lose the Test match too

This ODI series was very important. With a large number of matches from the 2020–23 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League called off or postponed, all the remaining matches have a lot of importance. In order to receive automatic qualification for the 2023 World Cup, West Indies need to finish within top 8. Right now they are at the last position, even below Ireland and Afghanistan. Last time also, they had to play the qualifier tournament (in 2018, for the CWC2019).

Florida has offered to host this year's Olympic games, in case Japan is unable to do so.

https://www.japantimes.co.jp/sports/2021/01/26/olympics/florida-olympics-tokyo/

Quote
Florida’s chief financial officer on Monday told the International Olympic Committee that the state would be happy to host the Olympics Games amid speculation that current host Japan may back out. Jimmy Patronis sent a letter to Thomas Bach, the head of the IOC, “to encourage you to consider relocating the 2021 Olympics from Tokyo, Japan to the United States of America, and more specifically to Florida.”

I understand that the Japanese officials are reluctant to host the mega sports event, which would mean tens of thousands of athletes and support staff arriving in that country. But Florida is not doing that well currently, with ballooning cases of COVID 19.
2320  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Another insane win!! $ 1B mega million jackpot on: January 26, 2021, 11:17:25 AM
It's right but it's more attractive and alluring offering that huge amount.

For sure the desire of those bettors are very high, bringing more people to buy the ticket and take part ot this big event, we are all have that instinct hoping to win huge amount of money. Once in a lifetime opportunity if ever you are the lucky person who win that such amount, imagine the changes in life that will bring you.

That is how the lotteries work. They will always overhype the winners and as a result new users will purchase lottery tickets hoping that one day they will also become lucky. But the sad fact is that no one talks about the losers, who fails to win anything despite taking tickets continuously for many years. And no one goes back to the lottery winners after 3-4 years, when a large part of them would have gone broke.
