241  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin to use 0.5% of world’s electricity by end of 2018 on: May 17, 2018, 06:31:16 PM
Quote from: coinminerdotcom link=topic=3912280.msg37582538#msg37582538

With mining facilities looking to be more and more electrically efficient with the coming years, I feel they will be pushing our electrical technology to tiers that will help us on a global scale.

Electrical efficiency would not immediately result in a decrease in electricity consumption. What matters is the cost of electricity and the price of Bitcoin. If electricity is cheap, miners will add more capacity. It doesn’t matter if the mining operations are efficient.
242  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-05-17] Thailand Waives 7% VAT for Individual Cryptocurrency Investors on: May 17, 2018, 07:12:28 AM

So how are they going to tax it then? In most countries they define Bitcoin as a commodity when it is traded on exchanges, so the traders have to pay Capital Gain taxes on their profits. VAT is supposed to be charged, when Bitcoin is used as a currency.

In the end it comes down to the use case. If you use it as a currency, then you pay VAT and when you trade with it and you make a profit, then you pay Capital gains on the profit.

I don’t thing any country charges VAT on currency transactions. If you think about it, what is the value you are adding by buying and selling currencies? Exchanges which charge a fee or commission may have to pay VAT, but not individual traders. Traders would be liable for capital gains tax.
243  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Europe Wants To Know Who You Are? on: May 16, 2018, 07:17:56 PM
well, I think they are doing this to protect people of fraud, some government may  ask people  to submit their investors information in order to know who they are and thus are subject to tax. The government are doing everything to get money from people to also ensure that the economy runs perfectly for the good of its  people.

How is collecting data about investors going to protect them fraud? People who raise money through ICOs shop around for the jurisdictions with least regulations. Innocent investors are burdened with extensive know your customer and anti-money laundering requirements.
244  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2018-05-16 Microsoft’s Search Engine Bing Says It Will Ban Crypto-Related Ads By on: May 16, 2018, 06:54:20 PM
Microsoft seems to be mirroring what Google is doing. In any case, Bing does not have a significant market share in the search engine space. I find it funny that they feel the need to ‘protect’ their users. They have no qualms about showing pe*is enlargement advertisements though.
245  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Cricket match prediction discussions on: May 15, 2018, 09:14:04 PM
I think Pakistan has underestimated Ireland as being the new team at test match cricket and thought that they might get an easy win however Ireland has shown that they are capable of putting up a fight and may even win or come close to winning this test match. If Ireland can get a 200 run lead it would be tough for Pakistan to chase it down.

If Ireland gets more than 200 runs lead, then either they will win the match, or it will end up in a draw. But one of the disadvantages Ireland may face is that they lack a quality spinner for the fourth innings. But then again, the chances of an Irish lead of 200+ is now very slim, after Kevin O'Brien got out.

Imam-ul-Haq really saved Pakistan. At somewhat like 10 for 3, Pakistanis were looking like they're done for, but then, partnership of Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam saved the game.

Now the 2 test series is beginning in Lord's, London from 24th May between England and Pakistan. This series is literally something for which I'm real excited.

Ireland had their moments in this test match. In both innings, they managed to get a few quick Pakistani top order wickets. A more experienced team may have been able to sustain the pressure and make inroads into the match. They definitely look more at ease in tests compared to Bangladesh in their initial test matches.
246  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain can help banks on: May 15, 2018, 07:20:03 AM
Another indication that banks can use blockchain as an ally, instead of seeing as a competition.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-hsbc-blockchain/hsbc-says-performs-first-trade-finance-transaction-using-blockchain-idUSKCN1IF01X

They don’t see the blockchain as competition; they see Bitcoin as competition. They are intent on milking the blockchain model to improve efficiency in the banking system. There definitely is potential to do that, given the armies of back office staff that banks employ for reconciliation.
247  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-05-14] First Bitcoin Smart Contracts Sidechain Now Secured By 1 in 10 Min on: May 15, 2018, 07:08:58 AM
I wonder with developments such as lightning network and eventually also smart contracts, what purpose is there left for other altcoins? Technically it's possible to add any feature altcoins are rocking right now.

I am strongly of believe that when lightning network becomes fully deployed and easy to use at client level, it will cause a major shift from capital that will be flowing from altcoins back into Bitcoin.

With all that in mind I wouldn't feel comfortable hodling any altcoin for the long term. People keep saying that Bitcoin is slow and lacking features, but time will show them what Bitcoin is really capable of. Wink

You cannot have everything on the Bitcoin blockchain. There will be some who want privacy and some who want total transparency in all transactions. So there will be those who use altcoins. Plus you need consensus to implement changes on the main chain- not a quick process.
248  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Cricket match prediction discussions on: May 14, 2018, 07:41:58 PM
The Ireland vs Pakistan match has taken an interesting turn. Pakistan were in the driver's seat for most part of the match, forcing Ireland to follow on and taking control of the match. However, a century from O'Brien has helped Ireland wipe out the deficit and they are right now 139 runs ahead with 3 wickets in hand. If they add another 40-50 runs to their score, it could become very interesting.
249  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BYTEBALL: Totally new consensus algorithm + private untraceable payments on: May 14, 2018, 06:27:47 PM
Paying for marketing in bytes can result in price down. There I mean on signature and social media promotion. Probably 80% of publishers selling immediately his bytes when received them for his job.
I did not have enough free time to analyze that but can be chance to buy cheap.
You are wrong!
Those participants can only make price down a bit for a short period of time. They can not control and make long-lasting, strong impact on the price of Byteball.
If you remember or spend several seconds to look at Byteball price chart, you will see that during the current signature campaign, Byteball price has surpass 0.034 BTC. It was significant rise, right?
I don't know whether the rise was mainly due to signature campaign impacts or not, but it is one thing which can prove your stance is wrong.

This is true. The dumpers will have a short term impact, but if they are getting new people into Byteball, then it is worth it. Think of how the initial airdrop resulted in Byteball becoming known to almost 90% of the Bitcoin community. Similarly, the signature campaigns may have a positive impact too.
250  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is the basis of bitcoin? on: May 14, 2018, 06:17:40 PM
The basis of Bitcoin is decentralized trust. If you get your head around that, you will have no problems with anything else. All the other arguments - block size, transaction cost, confirmation time, etc are parameters which are incidental. Decentralized trust was the real breakthrough.
251  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-05-14] Facebook wants to create its own cryptocurrency! on: May 14, 2018, 03:46:56 PM
Facebook reportedly wants to create its own cryptocurrency

Earlier rumors indicated the social media giant was researching blockchain.
Now it looks like that's for a payment system.

Source: https://www.cnet.com/news/facebook-reportedly-looking-to-get-into-cryptocurrency/

Facebook certainly doesn't need to raise money through an ICO for development. Evn if Facebook does issue a cryptocurrency, it would be the equivalent of fiat on Facebook and would probably be spendable only for Facebook advertisements. Who would be interested in buying a currency like that?
252  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Cricket match prediction discussions on: May 13, 2018, 09:05:27 PM
Ireland wasted a great opportunity yesterday. If they had taken one more wicket, then Pakistan could have been bowled out for less than 200. But the Irish captain put too much faith on the inexperienced Tyrone Kane and he bowled more overs than the experienced pacers Tim Murtagh and Boyd Rankin.

First test match and it's a follow-on, how worse can it get?

IMO, Ireland will take a while to understand how stuff goes in a test match. They've made very silly mistakes and dropped easy catches, like three catches in total were dropped of the top-scorer of Pakistan (Faheem Ashraf). Some oldies are still playing in their team, like the O'brien brothers, they need to train the new blood instead of relying upon the old one.

Anyways, the start of second innings by Ireland has remained fine. 64 for 0. Let's see how they continue tomorrow.

I thought that you could  only impose a follow on only if you get a lead of more than 200 runs. Apparently, if the number of days in the test match get reducd, then the lead for a follow on gets reduced as well. Ireland have started well in the scond innings reaching 64/0, but they are still a long way from safety.
253  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: BitCoin Futures on: May 13, 2018, 08:43:22 AM
I think that derivatives, in particular futures for bitcoin will affect the market of cryptocurrencies, but only on a psychological level, because large exchanges that already support bitcoin futures (Chicago, CBOE) will correct the market, but only if the volumes of trading will be impressive

The derivative market has more than a psychological impact. It provides an opportunity for institutional investors to short Bitcoin. That gives then the confidence to enter the market in the first place.
Volumes may be low now, but that will change when the market matures.
254  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-05-11] Norway’s Largest Bank Has Won a Case Against a Local Cryptocurrency on: May 13, 2018, 08:12:04 AM
This is not surprising at all. Banks are not obligated to provide services to all and sundry. They have their terms and conditions and if they suspect that providing services to cryptocurrency companies because of heightened risks, then they are well within their rights. Some banks even refused to provide services to American citizens.
255  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: the birth of bitcoin will cause google to die? on: May 13, 2018, 07:46:53 AM
I don't see any correlation in birth of bitcoin and the collapse of google. Google has its purpose in the internet of things, and bitcoins has its also purpose, both has existed together without any competition,so why do one make such claims.

Exactly. If anybody should be threatened by Bitcoin's rise, it is the old guard - governments, banks, Central Banks. Google can actually benefit from the rise of blockchain based businesses. Micropayments can open up a lot of opportunities for Google and other tech companies.
256  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-05-12] ‘Bitcoin is a Reaction to Warren Buffet and His Crony Capitalists’ on: May 13, 2018, 07:38:32 AM
Max Keiser delivered a scathing rebuttal to Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger May 10 after the Berkshire Hathaway moguls compared Bitcoin to “rat poison” and “baby brains.”
Full article on Bitcoinist

When Warren Buffett talks against Bitcoin, it makes news. All these rebuttals are hardly heard outside the crypto community. They are a waste of time. People who follow Buffett's old school thoughts would never come close to investing in Bitcoin anyway.
257  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Cricket match prediction discussions on: May 12, 2018, 10:19:02 PM
Pakistan vs. Ireland test match started today (from Day 2) after constant rain yesterday. Right now, 268 for 6, while Shadab Khan and Faheem Ashraf still staying & playing pretty good.

This time, Pakistan's middle order made the innings. Usually, if Pakistan's top order fails, the middle-order fails as well, but that didn't happen this time. Asad Shafiq's inning was quite a good one, but captain, Sarfaraz Ahmed, yet once again, played a disappointing innings. He has been unable to get rid of "twenties" in each inning for a while now, if we take a look at his all matches from 2017-2018.

Let's see how the second day goes tomorrow.

Pakistan would have been a little bit worried, when they slipped to 159/6. Ireland could have hardly asked for a better start to their debut match. The continuous rain the previous day would also have helped the Irish bowlers. Thankfully for Pakistan, their lower middle order has bailed them out.
258  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BYTEBALL: Totally new consensus algorithm + private untraceable payments on: May 12, 2018, 09:58:16 PM
I’m pleased to let you know that Byteball team is growing. This week we welcome two new members, well-experienced and passionate about the project. Elena Tairova and Luke Angell will be respectively taking over Communications / PR and Partnerships / Events.

Elena is a PR and corporate communications consultant with over 8 years experience of building and implementing large-scale campaigns for top global brands. Luke is an entrepreneur, growth consultant, startup mentor with a wide network of contacts in startup ecosystems around the world.

You’ll get to know both of them better very soon as they introduce themselves in the upcoming weekly newsletter. I’m very hopeful with this reinforcement of Byteball’s team and certain Luke and Elena are going to be a good fit.

Also, Eli is stepping down from his position as CMO of Byteball due to his additional commitments. After the discussion, we have made a decision to change the way we cooperate. Eli remains a Bytes holder and, together with us, looks forward to the project being not just at the forefront of technology but on the tongues of everyone.

For the next month, I expect there will be more strategic reinforcements of the team at the top level. We will keep you updated on the developments.

It is good that we will have somebody in charge of communication and public relations. I always felt that if the message of Byteball was better communicated, the valuation would be much higher.
Partnerships with global brands should also be good to increase adoption.
259  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: why gas price? on: May 12, 2018, 09:35:35 PM
just curious why is there gas when banks send funds for free.

Try and make a cross border transaction. Even if banks don't charge a fee for the transfer, they make a killing on the exchange rate. There is no way banks will leave money on the table for others.
260  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-05-12] 5,000 Developers in India Ready to Work on Crypto Projects on: May 12, 2018, 09:11:40 PM
They may have the requisite skill but it is not necessary that they will indeed work on blockchain projects. The top software professionals are usually in demand and blockchain skills will be just a part of their skillset. So if there are other higher paying jobs, it is obvious that they would go there.
