so why do we need a partnership for that?

Perception, PR value and integration. I (for one) am in the trenches. Every day I try to convince companies to use the block chain for application building. I had (still have) a hard time convincing people to do this, even with (because of) all the negative connotations (abuse, crime, etc.). Once MS started supporting this, my job became a whole lot easier. There was immediate perceived value. But that probably only works if the potential customer has/runs MS products. This would not make much sense to an outsider (i.e. a customer who doesn't use MS products).

EDIT: Partnership is probably not the correct term. More like cross promotion, you are listed as a "Value Added Solutions Provider" (or something like it)

Good point.

But there you have it, I see all the benefits that microsoft gets from this deal.
I just don't see the benefits our community is going to have, especially if true decentralization is our main goal.

Again, don't want to crush anyone's dreams/hopes here, but the only real immediate effect I see from this is an expected SPR price rise,
simply because many people feel very fuzzy and warm when they hear the words microsoft/spreadcoin/partnership mentioned in the same sentence.

But I like that we finally explore this with the necessary depth.
It was sitting on our table for quite some time now.

100% behind making the application to join. If later you discover any issues, the devs can just pull out at any time.

That's what I don't understand. The devs can decide to pull out?

Why not you or any other node operator?

From a decentralization standpoint this sounds like a nightmare.

Don't wanna be debby downer here, but... once we start affecting the whole spreadcoin network by pushing it onto Azure,
we can then later simply decide to revert this action, should there be problems?

Why do devs get to decide that, where is the power of "one node" = "one vote" ?

See, I wouldn't have the slightest problem with you deciding that you want to run your node on an Azure server.
I also have no problem whatsoever if you "partner" with Azure so that you can to run a whole armada of spreadcoin nodes and get a special rate or something.

I just don't understand this sort of "partnership" a coin has to officialy enter to be accepted.

More info needed to make an educated decision.
463  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: March 08, 2016, 09:27:06 PM
The lead dev, Georgem, wants to know what the community thinks and he want to listen to the pros and cons. He is open to the idea of working towards joining the Azure program if the overall feedback warrants a closer look and it doesn't end up compromising the project or the principle of decentralization.

I personally support this simply because I can make IMMEDIATE use of this inclusion to build applications on top of the SPR block chain and integrate this with other Azure components (database, websites, etc.). Many companies (that I know) already have Azure services and it instills a lot of confidence having SPR be part of that service offering. I don't believe this takes away from the decentralization principle simply because there are no modifications needed on the SPR side of things. Provide an API and everybody is happy!

Killer post in favor (see, I even used the US spelling). I'm considering closing the vote early because of this post.

My questions are more about the nature of the partnership.

I mean I can run a spreadcoin node on any other virtual server anyway, and can start building applications on top of the blockchain too, without azure...
so why do we need a partnership for that?

How exactly is azure "integrating" our blockchain into their other Azure components?

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but doesn't microsoft become a middleman between you and the blockchain?
How does this help decentralization and/or privacy?

More info needed.
464  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: March 08, 2016, 09:01:53 PM

More explanations /docs would be nice so that people can give a more educated vote.

What are the benefits of a "partnership with azure"?

So if I understand this correctly the idea of a "partnership with azure" is that once one of their customers rents an ubuntu virtual machine,
there will be a spreadcoin node preinstalled on it, ready to use if needed. Is this correct?

For this to happen, azure requires that a coin actually adds value/services etc to be considered.

You know, like a decentralized blockexplorer for example.

@coins101 what services/apps do you have in mind?
465  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: March 08, 2016, 08:48:30 PM
in other news, someone snatched mr.spread's original yet dead spreadcoin domain away:

http://www.spreadcoin.net/

there is currently something weird and japanese going on there.
466  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: March 08, 2016, 11:18:31 AM

So you didn't code the spreadcoin vanity address? Elbandi did that?

Just say you created it, no need to insult.

This is the open source world, it's not about "who created it"... nobody owns this, many people have contributed to make it happen.

Originally I think 100% of all vanity gen implementations out there are atleast partially based on samr7's work:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=25804.0

Elbandi forked it and simply adjusted for the usual spreadcoin network bytes.
But that isn't enough, since spreadcoin uses "compact transactions", as described in mr. spread's whitepaper.
(So https://github.com/spreadcoin/vanitygen doesn't work in its current state)

My vanitygen implementation goes a tiny little bit further in that I dissected samr7's code, accounted for "compact transactions" , embedded it in Qt and gave it a GUI.

Hope this makes it clearer.

468  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: March 07, 2016, 10:23:20 PM

Just to bump this, does it mean the standalone vanity gen is useless, or can it be configured to generate compressed addresses?

Yes, it's missing something.
This early standalone vanitygen won't work as it is.

Elbandi's adjustments were too few:

https://github.com/spreadcoin/vanitygen/commit/4a662ea48abef0fb146c945455832333a5d18535

As you see in the adjustments he made, he didn't account for anything compression-wise.

I'll have to look into it at another time.

Gentlepeople and Idiots Alike!!

Rejoice, for INSIDER NEWS IS HERE:

The update coming soon (one year from now, fret not) is actually Georgem's newest in coding capabilities. Fortunately for us, he has discovered he is able to copy and paste two whole characters as opposed to one, resulting in a 100 percent increase in efficiency.

Stay tuned!

I agree with everything, except the .gov!
What's with the .gov?
Never go full .gov!

What you're looking for is a hugbox or an echo chamber and both of them have plenty of things wrong with them.

Exactly... next they will demand that .gov creates #safespaces for them, so that their feelings are "protected".

Sigh!

I was actually reverse trolling. But it probably went over everyone's heads.  Grin

It came thru as such.
I just didn't have time to create an appropriate "reverse reverse" trolling GIF.

Right at this moment I can only tell you this:

soonz your moniez will multipliez!

Why can't you tell us anything else?

Because I'm preparing a tangible update, so that I don't have to "just give you words"?
473  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: March 07, 2016, 03:42:11 PM
Goal post shifted. Prior commitment void.

@georgem,  we need some dates so we know when we can expect to get more BTC.  This waiting is like:

Right at this moment I can only tell you this:

soonz your moniez will multipliez!

The community forum http://spreadcointalk.org would do exactly that "bringing people back together, instead of being scattered and divided." I'm not saying stopping this thread (the jungle), I can see the appeal to a point. But, if the overall goal of this community is to succeed as a top10coin in the work place, then it needs to grow a healthy community. I don't believe this can be done here, it's a jungle.
When this coin goes big, and it will, organisation are going to come and look at what SPR is about. Do you want them to find the "Jungle" or a well defined community, mature, with a good flow of information that is easy to find and digest, instead of having to trawl through 100's of post, most of which are little help?

Imho self-mod is more like a well balanced community of like minded people, nothing wrong with that. Without rules/self-mod you are only left with anarchy (the jungle).
No big players, say MS, will entertain us if we have a free for all with the "ISIS brand" popping up all the time (that goes for all coins actually). We do need to control our "Brand" for our future image.

I understand "FoS" and that can be had as long as basic forum etiquette is acted upon, respect for all, it works both ways that one. Remove the bloody flag and tag.

Taken from another forum that I use (xrpchat.com), some basic etiquette, short and simple to follow. It does work, see for yourselves:
It should go without saying that we all want a forum that encourages free debate and healthy discussion. However there are lines that must be drawn. XRPchat will not accept:

    flaming or insulting other members
    excessive swearing
doxxing of ANY kind (i.e posting personally identifiable information)
disrespect towards forum users, Ripple employees or others in general
Suggesting or attempting to get other users to make their secret key public

Lets keep things positive and on topic, even if its criticism.

Again, we had this exact same discussion a year ago.

Did Darkcoin/Dash ever require a self-moderated thread? No.
Does any other respectable coin/community care so much about trolls/weirdos that they need to revert back to a "safe space"?

 Cheesy

It says alot about a community if they let trolls have so much power over them.

We are above that.

Or do you want to be this guy?

474  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: March 07, 2016, 12:09:58 PM
Found this from 8 weeks ago, for all you "impatient" "fud trolls"

But for this I need to finish some necessary features first

ETA for first testnet downloads?

I hope end of next week.

You are quoting something out of context here.  Roll Eyes

This was before the roadmap and the decentralized blockexplorer was even a thing,
see this post of january the 8th:
http://spreadcointalk.org/index.php?topic=727.0

And date of roadmap: http://spreadcointalk.org/index.php?topic=735.0

I remember the first week of 2016 very vividly.
Back then I spent many hours putting all results and findings together,
cleaning up the mess, and I stopped listening to impatient investors (who constantly pressured me to rush things).

And so I finally came up with a feasible plan for the foreseable future,
where I get to work on innovative things that the community will find useful,
and because of that, investors will make a profit.

Your FUD is getting desperate!  Grin

So how is work on service nodes coming on Georgem?

Under the circumstances pretty good.
Dayjob is standing in the way a little bit.  Cool
476  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: March 07, 2016, 11:07:55 AM
I think it would be a good idea, protecting the image/brand from being destroyed/undermined by idiots.
Still have freedom of speech, but we can ensure we are setting the correct standards (How we present ourselves to the world).
Don't have to scroll through the whole thread for answer, all tutorial are easy to find/maintain on our own forum.

We can still keep this 1 alive, but we should use the official forum more

It would just look more professional imho.  Smiley

History repeats itself.

Spreadcoin was in the exact same situation about a year ago, when the old thread had a very serious never ending troll infection. (back when mr.spread was still around)
And some people also openly advocated for a self moderated thread, someone even started one that ran in parallel with the original one for a few days.

Those were the cringeworthy days.  Roll Eyes

I was one of the louder voices back then, arguing against a self-moderated thread, and bringing people back together, instead of being scattered and divided.

Yes, we should absolutely use our own forum more, but we should also keep this thread here alive too.

I love this thread, with all its weirdness and freedom.

Self-moderation is like thought control.
Freedom of speech exists for offending opinions too.
If anything, it helps to reveal who among us can be trusted or not.

477  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (decentralized blockexplorer coming) on: March 07, 2016, 10:54:37 AM
Are we considering switching to a self-moderated thread?

No we aren't.

When you have an ugly pimple in your face, do you decapitate yourself?

Ofcourse not...

we don't need a new head/thread, we need some form of abrasive acid to treat the pimple.

We'll figure something out... I'll ask the doctor...

I guess I see/saw it more as cutting the deadheads off of a plant to enable it to grow.

Speaking of deadheads and growing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2SRcILBQXM

lol, I see.
But not all organisms have the regeneration capabilities of a plant/flower.
What we rather need is a thick skin, because once our head/mind is gone, it stays that way.
That said, we have to become "Veterans of the Psychic Wars":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qaSEXCd11M

excerpt from the lyrics:

Quote
You see me now a veteran of a thousand psychic wars
I've been living on the edge so long, where the winds of limbo roar
And I'm young enough to look at, and far too old to see
All the scars are on the inside
I'm not sure that there's anything left of me

Don't let these shakes go on, it's time we had a break from it
It's time we had some leave
We've been living in the flames
We've been eating up our brains
Oh please, don't let these shakes go on.

This is slightly getting out of hand guys.. As much as I respect everyone's beliefs and opinions let's just stick to crypto.

Also, it saddens me to see some early-adopters and long-term supporters leave the project. For now I'm here to stay, and will keep an eye out for upcoming updates.

Good luck @georgem and anyone else involved! Smiley

Thanks.

Something tells me that those few early-adopters that left during the latest shit storm will be back quickly once they see real tangible progress.
I'm counting on it, and they are always welcome here!

But your mindset ... is positively false!

This is why I invested at 5k sats and I'm still here.

Money doesn't stink.

But please tell me, what goes on in your mind when you see this:

Is this offending you?

If yes, then you can (in a way) understand what many people here feel when they see your flag!
They feel like someone is openly pissing on their way of life.

Also, If you are invested in this coin, why do you act like a bull in a china shop?
You must be aware of the effect you are having. So why would you hurt your own investment?
 Grin

But hey, why am I surprised that there is even more irrationality the closer I look...

Anyway, I'm not here to talk about anyone's feelings.
