741  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Cold storage questions on: May 18, 2014, 12:08:37 PM
I realise from previous posts that even if someone were generating pairs in their hundreds or thousands there would still be a very small collision chance, but it's a chance none the less. I would be pretty gutted even if I lost just one BTC due to a collision. That could be a lot of money in the future, or could be next to nothing. I don't want to get into speculation  Smiley

I wouldn't worry too much about collisions. It sounds scary but you should be more scared you'll die tomorrow and never be able to spend those coins or give them to the people you love. That is far more likely statistically than getting a collision.

Statistically speaking, unless the protocol changes to accommodate more decimal places, only 2.1e14 addresses could contain at least one Satoshi, and that's only if everyone only had one Satoshi. If anyone has more (and pretty much everyone who has any has more than one Satoshi), then there are fewer occupied wallets.

Within the set of 2256 private keys, they only map to 2160 unique wallet addresses. So the question is how does 2160 compare to 2.1e14? One in a million? One in a trillion?
The answer is one in 6.9595 decillion. Since "decillion" isn't a commonly used word, I'll save you the bother of having to look it up: it's a one with 33 zeroes after it.

To put that 6.9595 decillion figure into perspective: The Earth has a diameter of 12,742 kilometers, giving it a surface area just shy of 50 million square kilometers. A square kilometer is 1 million square meters, and a square meter is one million square millimeters, meaning the surface area of the Earth, in millimeters, is just shy of 50 quintillion mm2.

So here's the game we'll play. I've got 140 trillion earth-sized spheres. On one of them, I have randomly selected a single square millimeter as the prize winning spot. Find it, and you'll get to spin the prize wheel to see how much you've won. The prize wheel currently has about 22 million spaces. 21 million of them contain less than a dollar. But you only get to spin the wheel if you can find the secret spot on the secret sphere.

Wanna play?

You say that a lot.  I'm too lazy to google it, so what does it mean?

1. And others; to complete a list, especially of people, as authors of a published work.
2. And elsewhere; from et alibi, to complete a list of places.

Formerly, this was preferred by some over etc. for lists of people in all contexts. At present the two abbreviations are used synonymously in many contexts for completing lists. However, in lists of authors of a published work et al. is still used.

@OP: Depends how much he was offered. Everyone has a price - and I have no doubt if offered enough he would be willing to move over. It's just that I'm doubtful anyone would be willing to offer that much is all.
743  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Make $7000 A Week on: May 18, 2014, 11:58:43 AM
Ipoomyself clearly is a complete moron with no understanding of anything (let alone arbitrage) and you should laugh at his foolish attempts to scam.

FTFY.

I don't even know why people bother - scammers somehow think we're going to fall for something that is so obvious. Let me reiterate - we ain't that dumb.
744  Economy / Gambling / Re: Suicide Notes - Gambling literally destroyed my life on: May 18, 2014, 11:52:46 AM
I would reconsider suicide.  I can't speak about Iran and all the weird social pressures you face because I do not understand. It seems like if you were paying for your mother's hospital you did an admirable thing.  There should be no shame in that.  Maybe you should move out of the house and move in with your father ?  Surely there must be some other option.

If you think you can beat a gambling game, seriously reconsider it.  The people in the chat box might have been working for the casino.  The chances of you finding a casino that allows a strategy to beat it is approaching 0.  There are very few people in the world who do this, but many think that they can.  You are not alone.  You are still young and like to be dramatic.  You are 22, educated, have a better than average job.  You did the right thing helping your mother out.  I see no shame or why you would kill yourself.  I was pretty down on life when I was your age too.  Cheer up.  Life savings at 22 doesn't matter too much.  Gamblers lose their life savings all the time at that age. Stop gambling!

I would agree that you should really think about what you are doing. You really only get one shot at life so you might as well make the best of it rather than giving in and throwing it all away. You have faced hardship - the best way to approach it is to bounce back and fight harder.

From a mathematical perspective, you'll never actually be able to beat the house in the long run and while variance does happen and you can win you are just as likely to lose. No-one will or ever has found a strategy, to do so you would have to prove 1=0 and if you can do that we have some far, far, far bigger problems.
745  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How do I post? My posts after first two are all rejected, I waited 1 hr on: May 18, 2014, 11:39:19 AM
Once you are Jr. Member you wont have any problems. The higher your rank, the shorter the waiting times

IIRC, around the point of about a Member the minimum time between posts is small enough that you won't get notices telling you that you can't post unless you are literally spamming a new post every couple of seconds. I'm not too sure whether it gets lower from there on - has any of the staff ever mentioned it for the higher levels?
746  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Are there any namecoin faucets out there? on: May 18, 2014, 11:30:44 AM
All you earn in faucets is just dust anyway, you probably can't even pay the tx fee. Just buy some bitcoins or earn some, and then exchange it to namecoin if you really need some.

Just out of reference - faucets are actually bad if you reuse the address with large inputs later on. If you don't have coin control in your client (only Qt has it) then you won't be able to specify which inputs are going into your transaction meaning that in all likelihood you may be choosing those dust inputs. The problem here is that dust inputs take up space without really adding to the value of the tx so you may have a crap ton of dust inputs meaning you get a nonstandard transaction that either requires a larger fee (usually more than all your dust combined) or you take a long time to get confirmations as some miners don't accept non standard txs.

i HAven't thought of the model or anything yet but i am going to the store today hopefully i get a decent camera available for renting to broadcast the first show i can do it with my laptop webcam but i don't wanna compromise with the video quality

Well that's reassuring - nice to see you've thought your business plan through. I'm going to hazard a guess and say this is simply a repeat of the age old scam with a rather different story this time. Either way with you being a newbie with no trust it's no collateral, no loan.
748  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How much would Bitcoin be by May 31,2014 on: May 18, 2014, 11:04:44 AM
Why would you bother trying to figure it out... Your best guess is always going to be off and depending on what happens we could be anywhere from $0-1000 USD. The whole market is determined by speculation at the moment rather than any 'intrinsic' value so if there is enough fear then we could plummet. Otherwise if people ooze confidence we could move upwards in the same way we did in Nov-Dec '13. Really, I find it's like gambling you'll get lucky a few times but you'll never truly be able to predict.
749  Economy / Lending / Re: Need loan 0.5btc on: May 18, 2014, 10:39:52 AM
Tomatocage, you're an idiot? I have collateral. write except that domains can be collateral.

That doesn't count as collateral unless you actually transfer the domains to another person. And it's not just your collateral, it's the fact that as a newbie you ask for a massive loan with no trust and no prior verifiable trade history.
750  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: any good bitcoin trader accepting PayPal? on: May 18, 2014, 10:35:54 AM
The fees ain't a problem. But since we have to do the currency conversion two times, and the trade volume is generally low, sometimes we are forced to buy Bitcoins at a considerable premium.

The fees are a big reason why I don't bother using the Virwox trade route. As much as I'd like to buy BTC with my PP it's just far too costly to bother (you lose something like 5% last time I did the calcs) and to me that's really not worth it. Easier to do a F2F transaction/bank transfer with less fees and no one worrying about chargebacks.
751  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is there a guide to Cold Storing your Bitcoins? on: May 18, 2014, 10:25:40 AM
Thats all it takes, just saving your wallet.dat? Is there a way to cold store blockchain.info coins?

Oh lord, that's pretty much the exact opposite of cold storage. Don't use Blockchain if you're planning on running cold storage. To give you it simply:

1. Get a separate computer that is air gapped (Raspberry Pi's are good for this)
2. Install Electrum on your choice of Linux distro on your Pi
3. Get the Master Public Key from Electrum and copy it onto your main computer so you can view the balance without risking it getting stolen.
4. Create transactions on your comp connected to the net
5. Copy this tx to your offline Pi
6. Sign the tx with your offline Electrum
7. Bring it back to your main comp and broadcast.

752  Economy / Digital goods / Re: [WTS] Genuine Microsoft keys for sale - Instant and Cheap! Now from $3.95 USD! on: May 18, 2014, 05:57:55 AM
If you are reputable or active Bitcointalk user you can get 1 (one) Windows "N" serial for free!

If it's free with no strings attached, I would like a Windows 8/8.1 key as well. Thanks.
753  Economy / Lending / Re: Need 0.02 BTC right now. on: May 18, 2014, 04:12:12 AM
I forgot I have SYNC as collateral. I have 0.02 SYNC and I'll be willing to forego the escrow for a lender with a lot of history. Everyone else, escrow required.

0.02 SYNC or enough SYNC to be worth 0.02 BTC? What exchange rate are you using for this?
754  Economy / Gambling / Re: DirectBet – LIVE Sports & Horse Racing Betting. Instant Payouts. BTC Rewards on: May 18, 2014, 04:08:52 AM
Can i add more amount if the system already received my previous coin  Huh
How to calculate the odds if i bet for 10 DOGE and the odds is 16

The odds represent the total returns you get if the bet wins. In your case if your bet wins you'll win a total of 160 DOGE. So your actual profit is 150 DOGE as the 10 DOGE you sent is included back. You should be able to add more unless the bet has been removed - at the top of your betslip it'll say 'open for additional betting' or the likes.
755  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Am I getting scammed? First time bitcoin user on: May 18, 2014, 02:45:54 AM
The transaction looks legitimate, but transactions aren't irreversible until they are included in a block and gain at least one confirmation, and the more confirmations the better.

Even at a the standard 6 confirmations they aren't irreversible. It just a function of the amount of network power an individual holds and whether its worth their time to reverse a transaction. It gets progressively harder with each block but if someone had 50% they would very easily be able to reverse a single confirmation transaction. That's why the whole notion of a decentralised mining system is so important.
756  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: any good bitcoin trader accepting PayPal? on: May 18, 2014, 02:31:54 AM
How come some do accept paypal? I am confused as I am new to bitcoin.

A few people accept Paypal because for them its easier than having to arrange a bank deposit/wire transfer/face to face cash exchange. But in general those that do will only deal with long time reputable members so they can be pretty sure they won't get chargebacked. You'd be better off assuming no one will accept PP - those that do won't deal with newbies and the likes.
757  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Hacker stolen btc on: May 18, 2014, 02:29:31 AM
Today hacker stolen my 0.003btc, i havenot virus. how hacker stolen my btc?

You have a virus/keylogger. Despite what you think that's usually the case. Either that or you fail to understand how txs fees or change works.

As a side note - because your not encrypted it is far more likely you got hit by a virus. Generally a Bitcoin-related virus will search for you wallet and upload it and hence because you didn't encrypt they simply swept the inputs into a transaction. In future I would advise having a password, its the least you can do.
758  Economy / Gambling / Re: [http://just-dice.com] Martingale betting bot for JD on: May 18, 2014, 02:25:25 AM
@seuntjie:
Could you please explain the point of the bot?

I mean - there is NO way to ever reach an expected value >1. Why bother?

Because there are hardcore gamblers who don't care about the negative expectation and simply want to martingale. For some reason degens have a tendency to prefer to the martinfail 'system' as it gives the illusion of profits in the short term. And anyways you'd be better off posing that question to any dice gambler - why bother when no matter what you do you lose in the long term.
759  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Activity on: May 18, 2014, 02:08:50 AM
How does activity increase is it by post count or time spent on the forum?

It is partially linked to post count - more linked to how many two week periods you have been active in. Refer to here for an in-depth explanation:

760  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Everybody's identity has a price. on: May 18, 2014, 02:07:20 AM
How much privacy does "our identity" have left anyway?
The NSA spying/data collecting has been as bad or worse than anyone expected. Also, the IRS was caught taking a close look at the tax returns of people who belong to certain political groups, and people get fired from their job for certain types of donations.

Bitcoin is not anonymous either (despite many "news" stories claiming it is)
I value privacy, but for me it's probably too late to really matter much.
Who has an identity that is currently worth more than $10?  Shocked

Last time I checked Google is estimated to make $600 a year from each user based on the the information they get from tracking and analytics. When they can read spending patterns and tailor ads to you it makes your identity rather valuable. I personally prefer companies to know less about me - I value that at a lot more than $10.

I suppose privacy depends on what context your in - you'll pretty much  never be anonymous to the government, the taxman tries to know everything so he can hit as hard as possible. But as far as big corporations go I don't feel they deserve my information - they're being paid for a service no need to bloody well data mine on top of that.
