9321  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Tether as Debt Security. And Tether Rich List on: December 18, 2019, 07:42:27 PM
bump, interesting topic =D
9322  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Usdt mining on: December 18, 2019, 07:37:55 PM
oh now I understand, but still why omni erc20?

USDT (Tether) just offer two different options to use their stable coin.

The first one, Omni, is a bitcoin blockchain token. It is somehow more secure than ERC-20, because it runs on the bitcoin network (which is more secure and robust, harder to suffer a 51% attack for example).

On the other hand, they also have a ERC-20 token (ethereum) and TRC-20 token (Tron). Those options are faster and cheaper to transact than the bitcoin token counterpart, however they run in less robust blockchains (specially the Tron one).

Tether cannot be mined for inumerous reasons, as any other stable coin, and this idea doesn't have any sense. To be a stable coin, your coin must be backed up by something. Tether is a token created by a company that works like a Debt Security.

You become a creditor of that company, making a loan to Tether with zero interest rate. You buy their token and tether promises to buy back that token for 1 usd each. You cannot make them out of thin air, only they are allowed to do so.
9323  Economy / Services / Re: [OPEN] bmy.guide's Postcard Campaign $15,000 Overall Prize and $500 Bonus Today! on: December 18, 2019, 07:24:49 PM
I read the article which was a great read(Did not find it long at all) and answered the question. However, the campaign itself needs major changes to the rules in my opinion.

- Disclosing the location goes against the very nature of crypto which is why the rewards need to be worth it which they clearly aren't.
- The pay rate of 10 cents per post is way too low and needs to be increased to something more reasonable.
- Posters cannot post a minimum of 20 such posts per week since this is not your average campaign.

These are some suggestions from my side.

Personally I have no problem disclosing the location of a touristic spot. However, 10 cents for a post which includes an original photo is not reasonable.
If bmy.guide really expect a minimum level of quality and effort by the participants in their photos and posts (which includes information and context about the photo) it really should consider raising it.

Imo, it is way better if bmy were very careful in choosing the participants, hiring few participants but of high quality (instead of hiring an horde of spammers posting random photos for 0.10 usd). As this campaign does not take place in bitcointalk, bmy could hire the best posters here (which are already in other sig campaigns).
9324  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Help me understand how to read the blockchain transaction history.. on: December 18, 2019, 12:27:01 PM
Thanks, its still a bit technical for me Smiley

Lets say I want to send 0.05 BTC from my Coinbase wallet to my friend who has a Bitpay wallet. Will this show up on the blockchain as one transaction with one input (my public address) and one output (friend's public address)?

You will have a better understanding if you stop using coinbase and move your funds to a real wallet.

For now you don't have access to your inputs, private keys, etc. All of that is done by your custodial service (coinbase) and you are paying them to do that (paying high fees for example).

Use the wallets I recommended (electrum or samourai) and everything will be much clear to you
9325  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is there a better consensus based on mining? show your opinion! on: December 18, 2019, 12:23:44 PM
Obviously, a qualified consensus algorithm should have the following characteristics:
1、Energy saving
2、Safety
3、Decentralized

Energy saving: With reference to the current mining behavior of BTC, it can be basically considered that mining that does not save energy will definitely lose decentralization. Obviously, the high energy consumption of BTC mining forces miners to run mining machines in places with extremely low electricity costs. This is not an easy condition to implement, which limits a large number of ordinary people who want to participate in mining. So if we want more people to participate in mining, the ratio of electricity cost per unit time to the value of mining equipment must be low enough.

What makes bitcoin resilient and secure is the energy consumption. If you remove that from the equation, it can be attacked.

For now, you need a continental scale energy consumption to attack bitcoin network. This is what you need, because bitcoin may be attack by a big nation in the future. Understand?

So, any alternative algorithm that is not resistant to a continental attack is a lose of decentralization and censorship resistance. More miners would be nice, however, add more miners without censorship resistance is not a good trade off
9326  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Help me understand how to read the blockchain transaction history.. on: December 18, 2019, 03:00:01 AM
I'm fascinated by the fact that we can set the fee. Suppose I set it to the minimum (or zero...?) is the transaction guarenteed to go through (with the delay)? Thanks.

The  minimum fee you can set is 1 sat/byte.
The total fee depends on the size of your transaction, which increases with the number of inputs and outputs (so the total fee vary)

Even 1 Sat/byte transactions are guaranteed to go through,  but you may have to wait a couple of days. Personally,  I see no problem in waiting a few hours or even 2days (never waited more than 36hours and i always use 1sat/byte.

One additional parameter which let you control the fee is the type of address.  If it is segwit  your transactions are smaller so they are cheaper. I recommend  you download electrum.org wallet for desktop or samurai wallet for android to get to know bitcoin a little more

Few years ago you could make 0sat /byte transactions,  but not anymore.

Is the fee (0.00105 BTC in the example) always paid by and deducted from the sender?
Yes. Note that this fee was much higher than needed for this transaction.

Transaction fee  is calculated by satoshi per byte (sat/byte). Fees are calculated by the size, in bytes, of the transaction.

That transaction spent 200 sat/byte, which is ridiculously high. What wallet are you using? Is it blockchain.com?

You can easily and somehow quickly confirm transactions with less than 30 sat/byte. If you are not in hurry (if you can wait 12- 36 hours) you can even send with 1-2 sat/byte

lol
Why do you think it is 'better' to by spied by anyone?

That´s so obvious, and if you read posts in this thread before writing you would know, because we talked about it already here.

Ofc being spied by different people is completely different. Do you prefer being watched by your mom or  by your boss??
Does it makes any difference for you being spied by a friend or by a criminal?

USA (Google) and North Korea (Samsung) have laws to protect individual rights and their privacy, while China doesn't.

Google and Samsung have more legal limitations about what they can spy and what they can do with the data collect.

@op since you now have bought the phone and if you arent't looking for any (more) opinions, should this thread be closed?

I think this thread might be important for future users who wants to buy or discuss about privacy on smartphones. Look at how many good replies after yours.

If I have to pick, I'll choose Pixel (if Apple is not included), but on this list that I searched for, Blackberry is #1. Maybe it's worth checking out. [2]

A30 is a good model too, not bad for the price also. I don't think the depreciation rate of the phone would be reasonable, unlike the flagship phones.

Must say I'd go for pixel too. Especially for a mid-ranger, probably Pixel 3a. Not only it's much cheaper than Pixel 3XL, but most of the internal hardware was also retained including the Titan M chip which helps you protect your sensitive data.

For some reason, there are no pixel models in Brazil, so I can't buy one. I can, but i will have to pay a higher price which is not worth.

In my opinion I think it's a very solid phone, with pretty good specs, certainly a good value for money.
-snip-
Regarding spying, if Samsung is using some parts from China, it is possible to spy on users through hardware as well. In my opinion this is not too important anyway, such things simply cannot be escaped in the modern world. Good luck with your new phone Wink
Thanks. I had a Samsung (an S4) and I liked it very much, it worked for years. My old motoG4 was almost 5 years old, I was pretty satisfied with the durability and it was in good shape, except for the camera (which is much worse than the current smartphones) and the glass broke (so i decided to replace my smartphone.)

At the end, I decided to buy a Samsung a30 model. Very good cost benefit in my country.

I think it is better to be spied by Google and Samsung than spied by Chinese lol
9334  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: What would make you join a new community as well as here? on: December 16, 2019, 11:44:52 PM
It will vary on each person but im pretty sure that majority would much prefer on to those places on where they can make money. Its one of the most important aspect which you should consider
and the rest is on that community and social aspect. Its the reality so its not a surprising thing.
This isn't what made me join this community. Maybe it is what keeps me logging in all the time, but I didn't came here the first time for this reason.

I discovered this forum because I had a genuine interest on btc.
This place has history, and most important for newcomers: knowledge and discussions.

Want to make a nice forum like this one? You need a project behind it, to make people discuss that project. Your project cannot be bitcoin or cryptocurrency, because that's this forum project, not yours.
9335  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: The big idea crypto Mining farm in antartica on: December 16, 2019, 07:09:42 PM
Mining is not just about temperature, but about the total cost of the operation.

If temperature were that important, china wouldnt be the biggest mining farm.

In Antartica  the cost of transportation (equipment, people, food, etc), energy supply, and so on.
who would create big mining power just to mine in a remote location? Only if the energy was very cheap there. But there is no way to move this energy to another continent.. .so yeah, basically impossible. to mine there.

9337  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What consensus alogrithm you think is best for blockchain ? on: December 16, 2019, 02:01:00 PM
and i did mention decentralized system..

Cheesy
You are in a bitcoin forum.
Ofc most veteran users here will tell you that POW is the best, for numerous reasons. For now, in the opnion of most people here, it is the only way to secure the network while keeping it decentralized.

All other protocols are somehow reducing decentralization to increase scalability (which is your concern, although you didn't mention it)

The trade-off decentralization x scalability is not worth now.
9338  Other / Off-topic / Re: smartphone privacy oriented on: December 16, 2019, 11:18:57 AM
I don't even think they're necessarily overpriced anymore, with the iPhone 11 being even cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy S10. You should probably give them a second look, and that's coming from someone who has primarily used Samsung phones for the past 6 years or so.

Samsung SX models are overpriced as well, but they have products with better costxbenefit. However, I will try to avoid Samsung (because of its price, as I don't like to pay for a brand) and Motorola because they are owned by chinese.

The problem with apple is the incompatibility and the price (which is 2-3x the price comparing the same hardware with other brands). The incompatibility is also a no deal for me, no USD, not even a headphone connection...  I need compatible devices and gadgets.

Edit: I  was thinking about an Asus (about 250 usd), but Samsung S9 is relatively cheap in brazil (about 370 usd).
An Iphone 11 is about 1100usd LOL.
9339  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Questions about the forum mechanisms + suggestions for topics titles on: December 16, 2019, 11:09:31 AM
4. Of course, there is another possibility as well, meaning that I didn't understand yet how the Watchlist actually works Smiley (and there are heavy chances to be this way).

As you said you are using watchlist only since yesterday , you clearly didn't understand it.

Quote
But even so, if 4. is the correct answer, then I still don't know to unfollow a thread where you previously posted, to be more precise how to make that the respective topic won't be listed anymore under "Show new replies to your posts" (in case other users wrote inside those topics).

Also, why do I see some topics in the Watchlist if I never used it before?

Any idea about this behavior of the respective two forum features?

Based on my experience, you should ignore Show New Replies completely. This is bugged IMO and completely abandoned. Every topic you ever posted will keep showing there, and this makes absolutely no sense imo.

Watchlist in the other hand is not bugged. Everything I am going to say now is based on my experience using the watchlist daily for nearly 2 years.
Watchlist works much more like a feed, as far as I could understand it. You can add boards and topics (if they are not in the boards you are watching) to your watchlist. Also, any topic you write will automatically goes to your watchlist (I am almost sure about this, but not 100%).

However, every topic that goes to your watchlist is going to be removed soon from there. When you click a topic in your watchlist it disappears from there, until someone posts again.

Additionally, watchlist is a list of "hot topics".Only topics which had a recent activity are gong to show up there. You won't be seeing topics which the last reply was 3 months ago (like the Show New Replies). The oldest reply in my watchlist is from 15/12, which is yesterday.

I think watchlist is an amazing tool if you use it properly, this is how I keep myself informed of all important (imo) discussions in the forum.
9340  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can I earn bitcoin for developing bitcoin core? on: December 16, 2019, 11:00:55 AM
The tricky part is that most of the companies in the crypto space normally focus on developing custodial wallets or exchanges, because that's where the profit is right now.

I believe that when working for someone else's company you will be always limited to those projects which are boring and profitable.

Unfortunately everyone is trying to make their own coin and only few projects are trying to bring innovation to bitcoin. Infrastructure projects, like btcpay, or something like that would increase adoption and profit from it.
