when using the -P option, vanitygen wants to know the public key in hex format after the -P, and specifying only the bitcoin address is not sufficient.
Is there any way to generate the public key in hex format from the bitcoin address alone?
If not, are other methods (no vanitygen, but similar methods) known that work the same way when only the bitcoin address, but not the hex format public key is known?
I seem to recall on the blockchain.info thread there was discussion of an algorithm he used to find the public key from the address. Has a fancy name but I can't recall that now or else it would be easy to use search. This was some months back I believe. I don't think it's possible unless the address has signed and broadcast a transaction, but I could be wrong. You are correct. The address is a hash and a checksum, and you can't undo a hash. This very property of addresses (being unable to recover the private key without a tx having been spent) will be useful as protection against quantum computing, provided addresses are never re-used.
More specifically, the address is:
A version byte 0 plus a RIPEMD-160 hash of the SHA256 hash of the public key, plus the first 4 bytes of a SHA-256 hash of a SHA-256 hash of a version byte plus a RIPEMD-160 hash of the SHA256 hash of the public key, all encoded in Base58. |

isn't there always a martingale simplification? so instead of betting 50% two times i could bet 75% one time and save on fees. if i know my maximum bet in advance, it should be easy to simplify the betting pattern to something with equal chances but lower transaction fees by betting on higher payout probabilities.
But then you remove all the fun from the martingale system -- namely, fooling the bettor into thinking he's fooled the house. |

Is it possible to write a bot that will monitor for losing bets and then try to cancel it by double spending the money to a wallet controlled by himself?
If he controls a large pool he could direct it to give preference to his cancellation transaction to make sure it propagates faster.
Is this possible in practice? How does SDICE defend against it?
I think a more practical attack would be to always get your pool to attempt to mine a block which includes a transaction that spends your coins to yourself, then as soon as you find a block, hold off publishing it for a few seconds while you place a bet at SD double-spending those same coins on "lessthan 1000". On the rare occasion that your bet wins, you "forget" to publish the block your pool found (maybe claim some other pool beat you to it), and let the winning SD bet stand. The rest of the time you publish your block, which effectively cancels your losing SD bet. I don't know if this happens in practice, or whether SD has anything in place to prevent it working. I haven't seen it happen yet. SD has no possible way to prevent it from working, other than pay back after multiple confirmations. http://blockchain.info/double-spends lists double-spends, but to get to the unconfirmed transaction you have to click twice; not very convenient when looking for a double-spend where the tx to satoshidice was orphaned. Also, fair warning - next week I'll be travelling to Macau, the gambling capital of Asia, to present at a gaming conference. We all know what happened. The "credit crunch," the "collapse," the "SEC emails," the shitstorm. Pirate ran off with the money, and with him went the shaky foundations of the impromptu Bitcoin lending economy. Even the biggest names in trustworthiness have failed to be responsible with other peoples' money. Lots of money was lost, there's no one left to trust, and that's a good thing.
First off, I am sympathetic towards those who lost money. The fiat world is so heavily regulated that jumping off a cliff is nearly impossible, and those who manage to do so find their landing padded by more regulation, lawsuits, insurance, government guarantees, and ultimately, welfare safety-nets. Thus, the risks associated with transacting bitcoin are almost surreal in magnitude. It's not only easy to steal, but transactions are irreversable, and loot is easy to launder.
There have been cries for regulation; AnCap opponents have pointed to every major theft over the past few years and said, "see? this is how regulation gets started." Yet the SEC has not returned a single satoshi to any one of Pirate's victims, and with Bitcoin, regulation backed by governmental force is fundamentally impossible.
We must turn to the ultimate regulator: the free market. Though destructive, the shitstorm was a natural tool which arose from truly free exchanges of value. And it's worked exactly as it is supposed to. Next time, the fools (myself included, though my gains currently outnumber my losses) will be a little smarter with their money, or they shall be parted from it again.
