#haiku

Oh that's a good one!  We need a self-starter with organizational skills to start a "Best of Wall Observer Haiku" thread.  Since it's generally once a week that haiku are posted, we could do a weekly poll to pick the cream of the crop and move those into the haiku thread.  Anybody have a kid in high school who has to do 40 hours of hard labour community volunteer service in order to graduate?  We could fill out the appropriate paperwork and get them an hour a week towards that.

In 1933, the manufacture, importation and sale of alcohol was still forbidden in the USA and had been for 13 years.  It would have taken many years for the brewing industry to recover after that so the price of illegal beer in that year can't be used to indicate the results of inflation today.  Also, fucking nobody on this side of the Atlantic ever bought 10 beer.  If you have 2 or 3 friends over to help you drink it, it can't be divided evenly which results in unnecessary arguments, feats of strength and ultimately fist fights over the last beer.  This is why it is sold conveniently in multiples of 6 or in kegs.  Only a barbarian would buy 10 beer; f&@#in' savages.

What kind of bastard would fight over a beer?? Huh

The same kind who would by a 10-pack, I imagine.

Purchasing Power of the U.S. Dollar Over Time

"The purchasing power of a currency is the amount of goods and services that can be bought with one unit of the currency."Source

The purchasing power of USD has gone down over years due to printing of more and more USD currency notes. The decreasing purchasing power of USD can be seen from the fact that 1 USD in 1913 is equal to 26 USD in 2020.
In 1933, 10 beer bottles can be bought with 1 USD and in 2020 you can buy just a cup of coffee with 1 USD.
In 2022,
One can easily correlate his local currency with this USD decreasing purchasing power since the phenomena is same for all fiat currency. For example, in my country I can buy 1 large bread for 40 Pakistani Rupee 10 years ago, today its price is 120 Pakistani Rupee.
Only between 1929-1933 the purchasing power of USD increases due to deflation and reduction in new currency supply by 31%.
As governments print more and more currency notes without any barrier the purchasing power of currency is deemed to go down.

The ban was enforced from 1920 to 1933. I can't say whether stats mentioned about beer are correct or not but there is a consent that purchasing power of every currency including US dollar has gone down over time because of uncontrolled printing of money.
If you don't like beer example, I have given you example of bread also. It was 40 Pakistani Rupees ten years back and from same store I am buying it on 120 Pakistani Rupee right now.
There are many such examples that can prove the decreasing purchasing of a currency over time.

Naan (a type of bread commonly used during breakfast, lunch n dinner in Pakistan) price was 2 Pakistani Rupee in 2000 now 20 Pakistani Rupee.

It's not that I don't believe you; there's no doubt that the sovereign currencies of every country have seen their purchasing power diminish over the years - some more than others.  My point was that selecting one specific product to demonstrate inflationary effects will not give an accurate depiction (while also trying to inject some humour into the board).  For example, it cost ~$2300 (tax included (which was 7%)) for my first ever home computer nearly 40 years ago.  It was a Commodore 64 with a 13" colour monitor and a 5.25" external floppy drive.  The latest computer I bought cost me ~$1500 (tax included (which is now 13%) and electronics disposal fee(which is some bullshit)) and even though it's a laptop, it has a much larger screen with much higher resolution and colour depth, 256 times the memory, infinitely more internal storage, a cool lighted RGB keyboard and as an added bonus, it conforms to the MIL-STD-810H spec.  The dollar's purchasing power for computing devices seems to have increased!

99.99% Uptime?

Where’s 0.01%? Why not 100%?

Yeah I remember there was an unexpected fork that happened in 2013 right around the time I was trying to figure out bitcoin.  It caused some downtime.

March 11th orphan blocks were slow.
Doubters panicked and let their Bitcoins go.
I took my chances
Took out all the loan advances
Now I'm holding for the longest time 😉

you got your fair reward for not being a doubter at that time

Sorry was just referencing a song from the time about the event you described: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NG1qooBzE2w

Apparently it was "scooping all the loan advances" I misremembered 😅

Good video.  That guy sounds a lot like Billy Joel too - great job.

This is a reflection of the state of mind of the people. People are sick physically and mentally, desperate, resigned to inflation, poor health care, the threat of world war, and have lost faith that anything can save them. Even here we don't see optimistic posts anymore. Yes, it's all a speculator's paradise, robbing the weak hands of their bitcoins for a pittance. The situation remains dire indeed and for the first time in Bitcoin history we have had 10 months of non-stop crashing without a rebound. It is very likely to last at least a few more months until the weak hands run out. But that doesn't mean it will be ten years or so before it returns to 60K+ levels. Bitcoin is not like gold and can easily and quickly catch up any lag. And while there were voices before that 20K was accidentally achieved due to the short stay in those levels, this cannot be said at all for the 60K+ levels where the price stayed for months. So this price is totally achievable, from where we can also expect the 100K+ to come true within the next 3-4 years.

Bitcoin price is falling down and right now at 20k$. Give it just a push of 3 to 4k and we will see analysts coming with charts that it's bullish now and next target is 30k then 50k and bla bla. And with that majority will start buying.
Likewise if we have a downfall of 1k or 2k, we will see predictions that bitcoin going down to 8k, 10k etc.
The real point is, no one willing to understand that no market can maintain upward trend forever. Market has to take correction after every bull run and this is what going on with bitcoin right now.
Bitcoin is maintaining window of 20 to 25k for almost 3 months now. I don't see much risk in buying bitcoin or doing DCA at such price. If you are thinking of long term investment and huge return then this is time to start investing. DYOR

Any perceived correction wrt Bitcoin is due to those people who don't understand that compared to everything you can conceivably buy it is technically. thermodynamically superior as an asset1. foolishly believing that they are taking money off the table.  So-called "bull runs" are just minor deviations from the HODL function; it's going up forever.  Laura gets it.

I understand the message but the paper that US money is printed on is a special blend of cotton and linen (flax fiber) so the notes are not derived from the wood fiber of trees.  It is a fact that money doesn't grown on trees but only on domesticated plants; the same ones we use to make our undergarments.

I went inside McDonalds to do that tasty research I mentioned the other day and while I initially had no intentions of taking pictures, the eggs presented themselves so I considered it a sign and snapped a couple of clandestine photos.

This is what their folded eggs look like while still in their plastic wrapper.

And they make their scranbled eggs with this liquid egg product.

Yes.  The only product that uses the fresh cracked egg is the egg McMuffin.

Bad news:

https://cointelegraph.com/news/hackers-exploit-zero-day-bug-to-steal-from-general-bytes-bitcoin-atms

Hackers exploit zero day bug to steal from General Bytes Bitcoin ATMs

Bitcoin ATM manufacturer General Bytes had its servers compromised via a zero-day attack on Aug. 18, which enabled the hackers to make themselves the default admins and modify settings so that all funds would be transferred to their wallet address.

The amount of funds stolen and number of ATMs compromised has not been disclosed but the company has urgently advised ATM operators to update their software.

The hack was confirmed by General Bytes on Aug. 18, which owns and operates 8827 Bitcoin ATMs that are accessible in over 120 countries. The company is headquartered in Prague, Czech Republic, which is also where the ATMs are manufactured. ATM customers can buy or sell over 40 coins.

The vulnerability has been present since the hacker’s modifications updated the CAS software to version 20201208 on Aug. 18.

General Bytes has urged customers to refrain from using their General Bytes ATM servers until they update their server to patch release 20220725.22, and 20220531.38 for customers running on 20220531.

Customers have also been advised to modify their server firewall settings so that the CAS admin interface can only be accessed from authorized IP addresses, among other things.

Before reactivating the terminals, General Bytes also reminded customers to review their ‘SELL Crypto Setting’ to ensure that the hackers didn’t modify the settings such that any received funds would instead be transferred to them (and not the customers).

General Bytes stated that several security audits had been conducted since its inception in 2020, none of which identified this vulnerability.

How the attack happened

General Bytes’ security advisory team stated in the blog that the hackers conducted a zero-day vulnerability attack to gain access to the company’s Crypto Application Server (CAS) and extract the funds.

The CAS server manages the ATM’s entire operation, which includes the execution of buying and selling of crypto on exchanges and which coins are supported.

Related: Vulnerable: Kraken reveals many US Bitcoin ATMs still use default admin QR codes

The company believes the hackers “scanned for exposed servers running on TCP ports 7777 or 443, including servers hosted on General Bytes’ own cloud service.”

From there, the hackers added themselves as a default admin on the CAS, named ‘gb’, and then proceeded to modify the ‘buy’ and ‘sell’ settings such that any crypto received by the Bitcoin ATM would instead be transferred to the hacker’s wallet address:

"The attacker was able to create an admin user remotely via CAS administrative interface via a URL call on the page that is used for the default installation on the server and creating the first administration user."

While the subject of fast food is still freshly on our minds  Grin,  I wanted to share a YouTube channel I stumbled upon:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIix6MklfJFywa_36iDj8Sw/videos

Here's a link to a woman making lamb burgers from scratch, literally, even the buns. This should inspire Torque to even bigger and better things with his burgers:

https://youtu.be/gq1DFcl67x4 - it's their most watched video.

.......

I cant put my finger on it, but there is something extremely therapeutic about watching these types of vids . Thanx for link homer.
Along the same lines (just the real sounds, no dialogue or annoying music, gotta love it) this dude's channel, shot in the heart of Azerbaijan mountain countryside, is also amazing.
Production is as epic as the scenery and editing.
