People are still using web wallets really? Did we not learn from blockchain.info.
What's wrong with blockchain.info? People still get hacked on blockchain, but they are a lot better than most web wallets, and if they add trezor support like they plan on, they will be the most secure web wallet. I think blockchain.info will probably be safer for a newb who doesn't really know waht they're doing, as long as they set up all the security features; 2 factor auth and a second password etc. |

Does anyone actually ever get whitelisted out of this place?  Well, the first post in this thread says "You can only post in the Newbie and Local sub-forums till you have made one post and waited 4 hours. This post must be substantial: at least several sentences." I think people register, post in this thread asking for a moderator to whitelist them and 4 hours later automatically get whitelisted =). Haha, I know it says you can post a request in here, but I've never seen or heard of anyone getting whitelisted. I'm not sure if any mods even check this anymore. |

This may have a better location within the forum, but since I'm only allowed to post here  There are going to be new types of crimes relating to bitcoin, some of practical interest and some of interest (hopefully) only to authors of fiction. Here's my starting list: 1. Public bitcoin address falsification. This is for the guy that prints up adhesive QR codes meant to look like publicly posted addresses and replaces the codes with his own address. Or anyone who finds a way to replace a publicly posted bitcoin address with another one. 2. Bitcoin wealth destruction. Say someone is kidnapped and "persuaded" to reveal a private key. With bitcoin, due to the ledger, its hard to get away clean with transferring the balance to a new address. But it's ridiculously easy to transfer the balance to a "dead" address. One whose private key was never saved in any way. This is the equivalent to burning cash but much faster and neater. And with new bitcoin crimes should come new bitcoin related sentences: 1. Incarceration until such time as the private key is surrendered. There should soon be no shortage of criminal cases in which the location of stolen bitcoin is "absolutely" determined. Producing the private key that enables restitution will become a formulaic factor in sentencing. All this already happens with paper money. The above options are still just fraud and theft. |

Not really, no. But the longer you've been around, the better, but this doesn't mean you should trust them implicitly. Look for evidence of many positive trades and for rep threads etc. |

I have some coins on a website and I really want to get them off. I've downloaded the bitcoin qt wallet and did a test transaction to make sure it works. It worked. I've had trouble finding info specific and detailed to these couple of questions.
I want to store some coins and leave a portion of it for me to use.
What is the best way to go about doing this?
In order to back up the wallet, do I just have to go to: file > back up > save to?
- is the file that is saved really big, like the wallet?
- Where is the best place to store this?
- if I do have to restore this how do I do it?
- I read somewhere that you need to back it up after every 100 transactions, other people say 25. Why is this? Also, if I want to store some coins, that I wouldn't use regularly, and use some other coins should I have two wallets?
- Is there anything else I should be aware of?
I also haven't encrypted the wallet yet.
By doing this is it basically setting up a password to open the wallet or send/recieve coins or both or something else?
Does encrypting the wallet affect the back up?
I'm a little confused and just want to make sure that I do this right the 1st time.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Encrypt your wallet immediately then just make several copies of the wallet.dat file. Put them on USBs and other mediums and then keep them safe. |

Everything I read was easy reading, a person can get the concept but cant grasp the details easily. Now that I know I am doomed to many hours of book's and testing, where do I start? Networking? Programming? Security? I feel the need to understand what is behind the software I choose to be secure against super computer's brute force attacks on my finances. I'm no computer expert and I've learned to use Armory and all it's features without much effort. It simply takes some time to familiarize yourself with the software. As far as the average Joe and securing bitcoins goes, when Bitcoin reaches the mainstream there will be services which the average Joe pays to secure his bitcoins for him (aka banks). The beauty of Bitcoin is that a savvy user can take the extra effort and be their own bank. This is exactly what I think. I'm sure there will be all sorts of gizmos and gadgets that will help Bitcoin become more safe and secure coming out this year. |

btcrow.com is also available. Not sure if they are any good. Looking to do a transaction with them eventually
I'd suggest using or doing some research on any escrow before recommending them. |

I believe that what you need to do is make five posts that also show you know more about bitcoin mining than an average newbie as well. As well as waiting four hours. I've also seen people that have done these false posts and get marked as spammers. Personally I would like to be able to post on the other boards in order to do some group buys I have been interested in. Hope everyone gets updated to a member soon and that this works!
You just need one post consisting of several sentences and wait four hours. You don't need to be knowledgeable about BTC at all, just look at all these newbs here haha. |

What about that one, is there a set 2 week timer or something? do you ever get the timer removed complety? on older trusted users They do it to save bandwidth and at first to stop spammers. I can't imagine hero members have much of a wait, if any at all. |
