1241  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Which is the best Hardware Wallet ? on: July 10, 2022, 04:23:38 PM
Well, any weak point in terms of privacy when connecting Ledger nano to Electrum server/s via VPN?
Electrum servers see your IP address, they know the addresses in your wallet, and they can see the balance. If you are using a VPN, they will just see a different IP address, but the same wallet information. You are also shifting your trust from your ISP to the VPN provider. Your ISP doesn't see what you are doing but your VPN knows who connected to their servers. They can probably get additional information like the sites you visited, the data you exchanged, etc. Most of it is surely encrypted though. Plus there is the dilemma of keeping logs. Some providers do it, others don't, and some claim they don't. But who can you really trust in today's world of liars!?

The privacy issue can be mitigated by using tor to connect to servers.  Even if you're running Windows, the Tor Expert Bundle can easily be set up to run in the background as a service.  The remote server will still see your wallets' balances, but they won't be able to use your IP to link or track your movement.

If you're not currently running your own node, you should.  There's really no excuse not to.  I used an old dell computer the likes of which can be found on Ebay for under $50. I had an old 1.5tb HDD in the drawer that would have fetched $20 on ebay.  If you're not technically savvy or familiar with Linux you can choose one of the "Node in a Box" deployments like Umbrel that make set up very easy.  So, for an investment of less than $100, and a rainy afternoon you too can take control of your privacy.  I have far more money invested in hardware wallets than I have invested in running my own node, but in my opinion the privacy of my funds only helps ensure the security of my funds.
1242  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Foundation Passport (FE) hardware wallet review and walkthrough on: July 10, 2022, 04:06:06 PM
@n0nce, have you tried to use the Passport with bitcoin core's external signer feature?

Honestly, I've never played with the feature myself.  Since I do run my own electrum server I haven't been too concerned about the privacy issue, but I think more and more hardware wallet manufacturers should make integration with core more user friendly.

1243  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Sportsbet.io's English Premier League Football Pool Discussion Thread on: July 10, 2022, 03:09:55 PM
I'm not sure who is to blame, but the team was in shambles when he joined last season. I believe they were a much better team before he arrived; they qualified for the Champions League without Ronaldo but were unable to do so with him on the roster. I believe Ronaldo was the reason Ole was fired. He was unable to blend the team with Ronaldo, and at some point, every player started to lose confidence because they were relying solely on Ronaldo to work his magic rather than as a cohesive unit.

I think that's a fair assessment.  They definitely appeared incohesive most of the year, and firing Ole didn't help, in my opinion.  Obviously Renaldo is a great player and could have made a huge contribution on with a confident and coherent squad, he was only slightly behind Salah and Son in terms of goals.  Contrast the cohesion of LFC or the Spurs, and it becomes abundantly clear this is a team sport.  I've never thought of Renaldo as a selfish player, so it would be hard for me to blame their lack of success last season on him.

No way he's downgrading to a less competitive league  Grin

No, certainly not at his current level of play.  And even if he did cross the pond to the MLS, a bottom-of-the-table team that can't fill a stadium with only 18k seats won't be his destination, lol.

The strange thing is you even become more careful with it and can grow it!

Lol, that's smart of you.  I'm the exact opposite, I squander my free bets like I stole them.  I almost always create the most outrageous multi long-shot on which to wager my free bets.  I haven't won any, but it's still fun.  And, if "fun" isn't the point, you're doing it wrong.  Cheesy
1245  Other / Meta / Re: [POLL] DT2 Status; how many net inclusions should it take? on: July 10, 2022, 01:58:49 PM
There is one thing you are leaving out -- the underlying reason why someone has this power is that many people have included the person in their trust list. Those who are on DT1 is (somewhat) random, and does rotate, however the people who are on DT1 are not arbitrary, they have effectively been chosen by the community to have this power.
Indeed, they have been chosen by a very small minority of the community
Just 10 people (with some earned Merit) is enough to put someone on DT1, after which they can create as many DT2-members as they want, or downvote all other DT1-members.

The threshold to qualify for the lottery is also rather low, I agree.  One battle at a time, however.  Wink

Of the 133 people who are eligible to be on DT1, how many people included them on their trust lists that have 10/100 merit (how many people actually played a role in selecting those eligible to be on DT1)?
The requirements are 250 Merit for a "supervote", 100 isn't enough.

I wouldn't mind seeing the "supervote" go away and have the merit threshold for voting raised to 100.  It's been four years since the introduction of the merit system and I think enough merits have been passed around by now to justify it.

there are 811 users who've earned at least 250 Merit, and 11,650 users who've earned 10 or more.

That's actually not as many earners of 250 merits as I would have thought.  Can I trouble you to scrape the number of users who've earned 100 or more?

Quote
How many people who are potentially able to play a role in selecting DT1 have a trust list, but no one on their trust list is eligible for DT1? How many accounts are actually active by various metrics (such as making a post in the last 60 days, logging in during the last 60 days, etc).
I can't answer all your questions, but 3 years ago I made my DT1-election: Rank up pipeline: loyce.club/trust/ranking/ shows that 477 users are included by at least one user with 10 or more earned Merit. Those at the bottom of that list are very far from reaching DT1, but 219 users have enough inclusions from users with enough Merit to qualify for DT1.

Since there were 133 members who were included in the lottery, is it safe to assume the remaining 86 haven't built their trust lists?

That is an incredibly cringy video, and not because it's John Oliver.  The most disturbing part is the apparent disregard by the so-called governing bodies.  The surveillance state is bad enough without corruption making harder to secure our privacy.  I can't help but think that the rich are going to keep getting rich by ensuring the powerful gain more power.  That's the tradeoff and we're the chattel.
1247  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Core correct way to backup? on: July 09, 2022, 11:14:54 PM
Cd/DVD discs are enough for me to hold my coins for the long term.
I have had many CDRs that were useless after a few years. Some are still okay, but I'll always asume they won't last.

The archival ones are bound to last longer, maybe even 100s of years due to being built with silver.  Unfortunately, it's still speculation.  The longevity of the disk isn't the only consideration, one also needs the reader.  I've never had a reader/writer last over 10 or so years, and since they sit unused most of the time it'll be when you need it immediately that you'll realized it has stopped working.  Imagine 20 or 30 years from now, how little demand there will be for optical disks, which means higher prices for reading hardware.  Possibly making it very expensive just to read your archives.

For long term storage, I trust paper much more than anything digital. My solution for Bitcoin Core's wallet.dat is only to keep it as a hot wallet, and don't keep much in it. I have backups too of course (on external HDD and USB stick), and regularly make new backups (even though that's not necessary, it's part of my normal backup routine).

I agree with you about the paper and using core as a hot wallet.  Even though you can use the hdseed to back up the wallet, I would want it on paper and I've yet to see it as worth the trouble/potential risk.  I'm much more likely to make a mistake while transferring an hdseed to paper than I am if transferring 24 common words.

We’re lucky to have such a great organisation here.

We sure are.  Case in point; SB is sponsoring the forum's Premier League pool again this year, they've pledged 0.2BTC to the pot.  In case you haven't seen it yet, the sign up thread is live in the Games and Rounds sub:

1249  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Sportsbet.io's English Premier League Football Pool Discussion Thread on: July 09, 2022, 06:45:51 PM
Looking at the Manchester United situation, I think they'll be even worse than last year. They at least had Ronaldo banging in a ton of goals, but if he is to leave or worse yet refuse to train, and gets dropped I think they could be in some real trouble, because quite frankly he bailed them out last year multiple times. We also play them within the first couple of rounds, so we could maybe compound that pressure on them by beating them convincingly.

Cristiano bailed them out, and they let him down in my opinion.  The way MU finished the 2020/2021 season, and adding Renaldo before last season every one really expected more from them.  I was pretty sure they would take the league, or at least give City and LFC a more trouble than they did.  It was quite a disappointing season, and I'm sure Cristiano feels betrayed.  I don't know what they payed him, but at the time it was rumored that it had to be less than what City could offer.  What's crazy is he could probably still play at an above-average level.

Anyway, if he doesn't stay in Manchester next year I hope he signs with the San Jose Earthquakes!  Grin

Speaking of American soccer, I should probably mention it here; I paid for an extra spot for this year's pool, and I want to give it away.

Requirements:
  • Jr. Member or higher rank
  • American citizen (no proof required)
  • Living in the US (no proof required)
  • Never joined this pool before

I'm not going to request KYC, lol, so please be honest if you want me to consider you.
1250  Economy / Reputation / Re: found 20 accounts transferring duplicate tokens. on: July 09, 2022, 06:25:30 PM
That's a big list of alts, but alts are allowed on this forum.  Just linking a bunch of accounts to one another isn't something that deserves it's own thread.  There's already a thread for that.

Plus, you're post is really lacking a lot of detail.  It would have been kind of you to use links to the account's profiles, so we don't have to search each one.  It would also be nice of you to link the address used by each account, also for the convenience of your audience.  But most importantly; what have they done wrong, are they cheating a bounty or something?
1251  Other / Meta / Re: [POLL] DT2 Status; how many net inclusions should it take? on: July 09, 2022, 05:04:43 PM
It's been almost two weeks since I updated the poll, and so far no one has voted for a net score of 0, which is the current setting.

Suchmoon's suggestion of net 1 with a minimum of 2 inclusions seems to be the crowd favorite.  It is interesting that all who've voted would like DT2 inclusion more restrictive that it currently is.

Right, so while theymos didn't necessarily categorise them based on priority, you can kind of read between the lines, and establish what might be implemented before something else. Ok/maybe obviously being better than the no category.

Obviously, this was back in 2018, and some of these changes have actually been implemented.

Which of the "Ok" items have not been implemented?  Most of those seem like old features to me, lol.  Several of the "Maybe" items seem to have been implemented as well, and the Bpip extension takes care of at least one.

I'm tempted to resurrect that thread to suggest an onion address for the site.

Cheers, I tried searching through my merit history with theymos as I was sure I would've merited it. However, didn't.

Lol, I don't use it as such, but it is a handy way to "bookmark" posts to which you'd like to refer at a later date.

Also, 2018! Time flies.

I was still in diapers, probably running around in the alts board during those days.  Undecided
1252  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🏈🏈 The American Football Discussion Thread 🏈🏈 on: July 09, 2022, 04:35:55 PM
DireWolf Im guessing you’ve utilized the mock drafts that both ESPN and Yahoo run? Those are pretty helpful to get a sense of how things will go , but annoyingly a lot of people will just bail on the mocks a couple rounds in so can be a while before you can find one where everyone stays for the majority of it.

No, I haven't messed around with those mock-ups this year, at least not yet.  I might do so later.  I do find it annoying when people bail after a couple of rounds.  I don't recall it being common last year when I messed around, but that was probably because I waited until the last week before the real draft, lol.

Maybe he is doing what he said:  Trying to help users to improve their account security, and ultimately to help the forum to tighten security.  Maybe?

Maybe he should have written a thread about it rather than going around trying to break people's security, then threatening them via PM.  Maybe?

What would he have done if he was able to break into one of the accounts he harassed?

This is pretty crazy and really sad. I simply do not understand how people can get this badly addicted to slots machines.  The lesson here  certainly doesn’t just stop with slot machines, this really goes to anyone for any type of gambling addiction. Hopefully he can get his life back together at some point.

Wrong thread, dude.  Don't make have to clean up after you.  Angry

Hah I saw this and wondered if some NFL star had lost it all on slot machines. I even did a search for it on Google News but it didn't yield anything.

lol wtf   Cheesy  I think I had two windows /threads open of bitcointalk and clearly picked the wrong one. Well that’s embarrassing lol. Moving along lol.

I did the same thing not long ago, posting about hardware wallets in the wrong hardware wallet thread.  Just blame the alcohol, that's what I do.

Hey Hueristic, since you're the Commissioner and we've settled on the 10 players we have currently have, lets fire up a league.  The more draft practice I get the more y'all are in trouble.
1256  Other / Meta / Re: weird pm received on: July 08, 2022, 08:51:38 PM
No PM for me, I feel left out Sad Maybe that's because trying to restore my account through security questions shows:
Code:
Sorry, there is no secret question set for this member.

He might only be targeting DT1 members with the PM, but I didn't get one either.  Maybe my account isn't worth the time.  Cry

I'm wondering if this is the same shithead that's been trying to change The Pharmacist's password through email reset.  It seems rather obvious that it's a phishing type attack, but I'm not sure how this user is expecting to gain access to the accounts he's targeting.  Maybe he's trying to engage people into a discussion, and convince them he's a staff member or an admin, then trick them into leaking more account details?

Lauda was a valuable member of the forum, but nullius made him into a deity of some sort and proclaimed himself the true follower of Lauda's holy ways, which is cringy AF.

And here I was under the impression that the Cult of Lauda was a DT gang.  Maybe that's why nullius is asking for donations, he really does want to become The Preacher.

I will admit that I've probably never read a single post of nullius's in full, simply because my attention span won't allow for it, so obviously I've missed that aspect of his writings.

You're missing out on walls of droning contradictions and adolescent musings delivered as if it's modern day Plato.  Personally, I find ChartBuddy's posts more engaging.

Guess I'll have to budge and join even though we're still on superbru. PM incoming!

Okay, the prerequisite superbru bashing shouldn't trump the generosity of Sprotsbet.io.  Grin

Thanks Sportsbet, and yes superbru's UI is kinda sucky.  That's all I got.

Hhampuz and rdbase have inspired me, so I want to sponsor someone also.  I also want soccer to become more popular in the USA, so I'm going to sponsor a fellow American who wants to join for the first time.  I won't be asking the sponsored individual to prove that he's American, so please only ask me to choose you if are an honest to goodness American citizen living in the USA, and you're a Jr. Member or above.

@hilariousandco, I'll send 0.005BTC this evening and follow up with the txid via PM.
1260  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: SCAM EXCHANGE MONITOR: BestChange on: July 08, 2022, 05:13:16 PM
OpenChange has been working for six years before the forum members of bitcointalk decided that the exchanger is not sufficiently ethical with regards to fines for non-compliance with their rules by users.
They may exist for six years or more but something obviously changed in recent years and some exchanges became more strict with their kyc rules.
Solution for them is to find better exchanges, maybe p2p trading or something else, even if that means that transactions could be slower and have higher fees.
Instead they choose to use quick method that is much more risky.

This episode of Scam Exchange along with Wasabigate is making it clear that bitcoin is going through some growing pains.  It's actually a good sign from the perspective of mass adaption, but if exchanges are going to continue pushing their made-up AML policies on consumers, things won't end well for said exchanges.  More and more people are starting to shy away from custodial wallets and AML/KYC exchanges, and gravitating to the p2p exchanges like Bisq.

Hell, I fell for the CoinBase ISO and I'm still stock holder, but my friends and family are getting tired of me screaming "BISQ" when ever any centralized exchange is mentioned.

Would we have this case if Janyah201 had opened the rules of the service before the transaction, seen their KYC requirement for high-risk transactions, said “nope, this isn’t for me” and would go search for another service?

Who cares?  If it wasn't Janyah201 it would have been someone else.  Janyah201 isn't the one who abused his power to bludgeon consumers with AML fantasies, it was Openchange, the company you're promoting and defending.  This is the beginning of the end for any exchange that opperates the way Openchange did in this circumstance, and if you don't change your policy of putting exchanges above clients, it's the beginning of the end of BestChange as well.
