1201  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano S Plus alternatives? on: July 17, 2022, 03:25:00 PM
Well the thing here is that trezor in general and moreover trezor one does not support coins, which I would like to store (ada, near, sol, atom..).. otherwise, a good wallet. No issues in storing eth and btc.

In that case I would recommend the Ledger Nano S plus.  Ledger tend to be at the forefront when it comes to supporting new altcoins.  If you own a lot of alts it can actually be an advantage since you can use Ledger Live to manage most of your assets, and don't have to install separate wallet clients for each alt.

I will take the opportunity to express my opinion, however; just because an alt is supported by Ledger doesn't make it worth owning.
1202  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano S Plus alternatives? on: July 17, 2022, 02:26:04 AM
I was looking for the second HW wallet (I already own Trezor One for BTC, ETH) to hold my alts (like ADA, ATOM, NEAR etc.).
I thought to get Ledger nano s+, but are there any open-source alternatives for +/- the same price?

Just curious why don't you just get another Trezor One?  It fit's the requirements of open source and it's in the price range.  It also happens to be a great wallet.  The only drawback I find is it's not compatible with Monero's official wallet.

The other question that comes up, is why do you need another hardware wallet, just as a back up?  If it's just so you can have another set of addresses, you can do all that with one hardware wallet by setting up multiple Bip39 passphrases and/or derivation paths.

basically the main purpose is to hold coins and connect to wallet once a month to check the balance.

There's no need to connect your hardware wallet to check your balances.  All you need are watch-only versions of your wallets.

1205  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum 4.2.2 Released on: July 16, 2022, 07:15:04 PM
Hi, Can anyone help explain how to upgrade a cold storage Electrum wallet on the Linux USB drive?
It has not been used since 2017. I have the seed phrase, pass code, etc. It opens, but I cannot send it to the exchange.

Many Thanks, in advance!

Do you mean you have a live USB drive with Electrum installed on it?  You don't really need to do that, you can just download the latest appimage and use that instead since it doesn't need to be installed.

Before you can sign a transaction on the offline machine, you'll need to create it in a watch-only wallet first.  If you don't have a watch only wallet, you can create one by exporting the master public key from the offline wallet.
1206  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Coinkite ColdCard Mk4 Review on: July 16, 2022, 03:51:59 PM
Thank your for your in-depth review. I have also a MK4 and I think basically the same about the wallet. Maybe we can get some news about NFC sooner or later, especially since the CEO of Coinkite is reading in this forum  Wink.

I think the only way to get NFC working in a way that I would use it, is if there was an companion app from ColdCard, and if that app was open-source.  Otherwise, the feature might as well not be included.  I'm usually reluctant to install apps on my mobile devices unless they're absolutely necessary, so even if there was a third-party app to use with the feature I would probably opt-out.

You will never have this for ColdCard wallet now after they changed their source code license so you can only view it and not fork it.

Meh, I wouldn't count them out just yet.  Competition has a way of coercing companies to adapt to their clients' desires.

While I like a lot of the features you mentioned, there's one or two in particular I dislike a lot: first the ability to create paper wallet data which is unrelated to the main ColdCard seed. There might be use cases for that, but I simply find it a dangerous features, because you can't recreate such paper wallets if you loose any details or documentation of it.

There is a way to generate individual keys that are indeed backed up by the master seed, but I believe the "Paper Wallet" generator is decoupled from that on purpose.  There are indeed use cases where you want to generate a key that isn't recoverable; keys for physical coins or Paper Wallet gifts for example.

The second feature I don't like is the ability to have a special PIN which completely bricks the device. As far as I understood it, it's optional and I don't have to use it, still doesn't feel comfortable for me personally.

If you travel with your device and find yourself in a compromised position you may find the ability to brick your device rather handy.  Again, there specific use cases for this feature, and it's not enabled by default.

Some interesting features which are also new for the Mk4 incarnation of the ColdCard device set this Mk4 apart from predecessors. How do we know that Coinkite did it "right" with those new features? With closed-source firmware you'll have to put too much trust into them for my personal security taste and comfort.

My personal conclusion is: as long as I have more open-source alternatives and no unique feature that this device offers and which I need, I'd stay away from ColdCard Mk4.

That's always the concern with closed-source code.  Obviously there are risks, and everybody needs to assess those risk for themselves.  Since the original intent is for ColdCard the to remain as an air-gapped device, many of the risks are mitigated if you use the Mk4 in that way.
1207  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Square is considering making a hardware wallet for Bitcoin on: July 15, 2022, 10:04:58 PM
Besides the obviously flawed nature of online wallets (not your keys), this would also actually put 2 out of 3 keys on their server, as obviously this 'email + password' account will be on their server.
Nevertheless, I think you might be onto something.  It's not beyond a company with that kind of ego to decide the general public are not to be trusted with their own security.  Yet they keep digging in, and continue to use phrases like "self-custody" and "self-serve recovery."
If I remember correctly, there was another (unrelated) service (wallet?) in the past that claimed you had 'self-custody', since you could display, backup and restore your seed words, but also access your account (which included the seed) using an email and password login.
This means that you did have 'full self control over the funds', but they did, too! Cheesy

I'm not saying Square is doing this, just saying it wouldn't be the first time..

I just find it ironic that some bloated-ego blowhard who tried, (and failed) to lecture us on "misinformation," ending up wrong more often than not, and trying to prevent open discourse which would allow people to make up their mind still thinks so highly of himself that, once again he's trying to protect us from ourselves.  And, to do so, he's spreading misinformation.

Even if it was the best hardware wallet on the market I wouldn't give that shitforbrains a single penny of my money.
1208  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: btc - eth exchange on: July 15, 2022, 05:43:05 PM
Why would anyone offer a 20% discount?  I mean, what legitimate reason would someone have to give away money?  Rhetorical questions really; this looks like an attempt to lure in the greedy for a scam.
1209  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Want to exchange BTCX airdrop coins for USDT on: July 15, 2022, 05:27:32 PM
1 BTCX coin  = 0.1 USD, so you get around 1000 BTCX coins

I have found two different tokens that are referred to as BTCX.  One is Bitscoin which is trading around $0.000262, and the other is BitcoinX that's trading around $0.0389.  Regardless, I don't trust the market cap reports for either of these tokens, it looks like a bunch of fake volume.

I wasn't able to find any token called BTCX that's trading at $0.1.  Is there another that I'm unable to find?  Is your token traded on any legitimate exchange?

1210  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🏈🏈 The American Football Discussion Thread 🏈🏈 on: July 15, 2022, 04:55:30 PM
should Kyle Shanahan trade Garoppolo and put all his trust on Trey Lance as first quarterback for this new season?

Yes.  I'm not sure that Lance will be the second coming of Montana and spark a new 49er dynasty, but if that's going to happen it has to start with Shanahan putting ALL his trust in Lance.  There's no other way to get there from here.

In any case, I saw someone mention in social media that Zach Wilson is a good bet for the regular season's MVP. I do not know if this is a joke because of those sleeping with mom's friend news or if the Jet's offensive line really has improved with new trades.

Zack Wilson was my favorite quarterback from the 2020 draft class, and he has the hottest mom.  I'm sure she could convince me to vote for him.  Are her friends cute too?

1211  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: Sportsbet.io's Premier League Prediction Sign-up. 0.0025 to join 0.2+ in prizes on: July 15, 2022, 04:38:49 PM
I hope this year we can be 75 players.
Im a little bit optimistic? Maybe, but come on BTCtalkers its the main competition of the whole forum we need to make this possible.

Only look at the 0.2 putting by the sponsor that its amazing.

The nice thing about this pool is that it's not dependent on any specific number of players to be fun.  The more the merrier, of course.  Adding to the pot, and adding more positions that qualify for a prize is always nice.

I'm not sure about it, maybe 75 would be a bit too many. Something  about 50 players is optimal number. With more players chances to win something is getting significantly smaller.

75 might be too many to expect, but I wouldn't put any limit on the number of people who want to participate.  If we could get 75 players, I think that would be cool.  If that were to happen I wouldn't mind seeing the prizes awarded to the top 15 participants.  That would 20% which is pretty good odds for all of us to make the cut.

And then it's likely that many players simply will give up and stop playing.

Hey now, I resemble that remark.  I got super busy towards December/January last year and forgot to update my predictions for a couple of weeks.  I wasn't doing too good to begin with, so that was all it took for me to fall to the bottom of the table.  I had a hard time with motivation after that.  I plan to be more proactive this year, even if I don't do well enough for a prize.

1213  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] Bisq - Exchange, Decentralized. on: July 15, 2022, 02:26:38 PM
Bisq has a new update as of 10 days ago, it's now up to version 1.9.4.  One improvement is an update to the latest version of Tor, which improves network reliability.  The other significant improvement is the implementation of derivative Monero addresses, (sub-addresses) which can greatly improve privacy if you use Bisq to trade XMR.

This is a follow-up release that adds the latest Tor version (v0.4.7.Cool to improve Tor connectivity.
~
Improvements
  • Create new XMR subaddress for each trade
  • Improve XMR proof service
  • Reset Tor directory when a new release is downloaded
  • Adopt economyFee recommendation from Mempool rate provider
  • Add chart series for total trade fees
  • Show changes in BSQ Supply over time
  • Prevent account creation for banned Revolut GBP sort code 040075
  • Improve wording & appearance of trade shutdown dialog
  • Prevent shutdown if trade is in process of being taken
  • Mark user's own offers in Market -> Offer book
  • Attempt self-ping 3 times before reporting error with connectivity

More detailed info can be found here: https://github.com/bisq-network/bisq/releases/tag/v1.9.4

Bisq exchange is working on big update for their new version 2.0 with massive UI changes and improvements.
This is not released for public yet, current version is 1.9.2, but according to screenshots I saw this looks amazing and it improves privacy.
There is a new welcome screen, Nym profiles are available, and you can simply navigate with clicks and sliders, Lightning, Liquid, etc.
It appears to me they hired some new people to help them make it very easy to onboard new users to Bisq.

I'm anxious to play with it, and hopeful we'll see a beta release in the next few months.  Unfortunately there isn't a set timeline for 2.0 release, but I expect some of the features will be implemented in minor version updates of 1.9.x as they get validated.

JollyGood would be more aptly named JackBootedThug.  I find it amusing that he's been ignoring me for months, and refuses to engage in a dialogue about his abusive use of the trust system.  His silence speaks volumes.

Yet, he'll write walls of texts to harass people, demands they capitulate to his whims, even going so far as insisting they breach their own privacy or the privacy of others just so he can get his fix of drama.  All while holding them hostage with his red-tags.
1215  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Foundation Passport (FE) hardware wallet review and walkthrough on: July 15, 2022, 02:08:15 AM
You mean Bitcoin Core is incompatible with more affordable hardware wallets?

Not in general terms, no.  But as it's "shipped" and in regards to the specific method of exporting PSBTs from a watch only wallet and transfer them via mSD, yes.  The Trezor One and comparably priced wallets that I know of don't have a micro SD slot.  My comments were regarding the discussion of using core to avoid the privacy concerns of using SPV clients (without your own server.)  And as far as I know there's no way to sign a PSBT without client to pair with the Trezor One.  I suppose one could just use an empty electrum wallet to sign and broadcast.

I was mainly referring to an issue where -txindex really helped me out. At that point in time, I wasn't aware that you can't actually look up a transaction if you don't have that toggled on.
The default value of -dbcache can also easily be too high or too low depending on use case and hardware availability.

But this all refers to building from source. I'm not actually sure what options are toggled or not when getting Bitcoin-Qt binaries.

Interesting!  I would have assumed those would be defaults, even when building from source.  Thanks for the tip, I'm sure I would have overlooked that.

Yeah; I'd still like the 'camera verification' to work as intended though, since the inclusion of a camera is one of the biggest selling points of this device. So please make it usable anywhere that makes sense.. Wink

I hope they're lurking here reading your posts, you have a lot of great suggestions.

This is from the latest post on their blog;

In a previous post we shared how our hardware device will be one of three elements included in our self-custody bitcoin wallet, providing customers with additional layers of security when moving money and acting as a self-serve recovery kit when a customer loses their mobile wallet.

once again your motives for sending them to a selected circle make no sense unless you state your intentions for sending them.

It's fair to point out that I was among the circle invited by Royse777 to review the evidence.  Unfortunately I didn't have to time to follow through, so I have nothing to add regarding the messages.  But, his invitation does say something considering I was the first DT member to red-tag him.  The circle of individuals he selected included those who were critical of his behavior.
1218  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Foundation Passport (FE) hardware wallet review and walkthrough on: July 14, 2022, 03:48:20 AM
Yes, with Passport it's the same thing. Basically you transfer PSBTs back and forth using a microSD card.

Still it's pretty straight forward.  Unfortunately however, incompatible with the more affordable hardware wallets on the market.

Yeah, Bitcoin Core default / minimal install options don't include everything... Wink

I reckon you've been down this road before.  Any other options you recommend I consider?  Might as well turn it into a rainy-month-of-sundays.  Cheesy

You mean verifying manually by putting the Passport in front of your monitor and comparing some addresses letter by letter?

Exactly.

Sure; you can always do that. It's worth mentioning that the text file which Passport writes to the microSD also includes a few addresses that can be checked against Bitcoin Core's address tab, too.

That makes things more convenient.  I do trust in my ability to keep my rigs free of malware.  I've been at it long enough, so trust my clipboard with regular verification.
1219  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Coinkite ColdCard Mk4 Review on: July 13, 2022, 07:23:49 PM
I am a bitcoin maximalist and the ColdCard is a Bitcoin Only hardware wallet, but I do wish they would integrate support for Monero's official wallet.
You will never have this for ColdCard wallet now after they changed their source code license so you can only view it and not fork it.
I think that only Trezor model T and ledger wallets support Monero for now, but someone started to work on fork of open source project SeedSigner that is called MoneroSigner.
It's easy to make this signing device on your own with RaspberryPi zero and printing your own 3d case.

I have other options, like an air-gapped laptop, and I also have a Trezor Model T, which I do use for monero.  I don't hodl XMR, so it's not my biggest issue, but it does feel weird to have thousands of dollars in a desktop wallet, even if it is for a short time while I wait for a Bisq offer to get a bite.  I know most bitcoin maximalists appreciate monero's privacy features, which is why I think ColdCard should support it.

At the time of writing this review the ColdCard costs $158, which puts it in the bracket of moderately priced competitor models, and nearly identical to the Ledger Nano X.  Despite it's price being roughly twice that of a Trezor One, I think it's still a good value given it's many features which I'll touch on below.
To be fair, there was a time few months ago when you could buy ColdCard for around $120 on presale, and some other hardware wallets also offered lower prices like Foundation Passport.
I would never give $280 for Trezor T or $157 for ledger model X.

I just looked up my old invoices; I paid $149 for my Model T in January of 2019, and in May of the same year I purchase a bundle from Ledger that included the Nano X and Nano S.  The bundle price was also $149.  It's insane how much things have gone up in the last three years.  Although the Trezor T is my favorite HW wallet, I too would have a hard time justifying $280 for one, especially since the Foundation Passport has been released.

The wallet it's self is a very simple design, intentionally meant to look like a 90's vintage calculator that you got for free when opening your first checking account.  An uneducated thief looking for items of value wouldn't give it a second look.  The clear plastic housing is a cool look in my opinion; however I do believe a flat black option would further the intent of making it look like a cheap calculator.
This is really interesting and I didn't know they are sending their hardware wallet like this.
Is returned address or anything else mentioning Coldcard hardware wallet or not?
I wonder if this could trick customs and that could avoid paying extra import taxes in some countries, even if I am not a fan of their cheap calculator look.

The hardware wallet did arrive in a sealed, tamper-evident bag, as Coinkite demonstrates on their Quick Start page.   I did not photograph the bag because it has identifying information on it.  As a supply-chain security feature the bag and hardware wallet are numbered to match.  It was obvious that the device was new, I don't think any effort was made to skirt customs, tariffs, or taxes.

The bottom line about the ColdCard, or just about any purchase can be summed up with one question; would I buy it again?  The answer is a resounding "Yes!"
Very good review and I think it could help someone who ios thinking of buying their new Mk4 device, but if you ask me would I buy it, I would say No Wink
However, I do think new Coldcard wallet is still better and more secure than other hardware wallets like ledger, so it's middle ground between open and closed source devices.
I don't think they solved anything with two secure elements, and I bet this will create some issues down the road.

Thank you, I'm glad you find it helpful.  As for the closed-source vs. open-source debate, everyone is going to have an opinion and I wasn't expecting to change anyone's mind.  As I've said I believe the firmware should be open source, but I understand why it isn't.  I also feel the features of the ColdCard are worth the extra effort I have to take ensure my safety due to it's closed-source nature.

Some CL qualifiers on tonight, not the highest quality teams but always an opportunity to make some money gambling. Maybe a cheeky Steve style big accumulator Cheesy

I find these type of games have a lot of goals so perhaps & Both Teams To Score Accumulator has a good chance of being successful.

Yesterday's Vikingur Reykjavid vs. Malmo match was high scoring, but most the matches were on the low side.  Still, both teams score is probably a good be for some of the matches, but I'm not familiar enough with those clubs to get accurate predictions.  The US's MLS is going strong right now.  Not the most competitive league, but some of the clubs are fun to watch.  Since I follow the league I'm usually more comfortable making predictions for those matches.
