Somewhat similarly to wordpress (open source, easy to set up).

Diaspora maybe?
1702  Other / Off-topic / Re: Someone accessed my facebook account internally? on: December 31, 2012, 01:03:37 PM
Any suggestions? Am I being monitored by THE GOVERNMENT? (No kidding, this creeps me out and I'm considering starting to use VPN)

You're being monitored by several governments.

How did you receive the notice? Are you sure it was from Facebook? That type of phishing email is pretty common.

@ OP check the email headers...
1703  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My open letter to Bitcoin Foundation on: December 30, 2012, 06:23:35 PM
MtGox and BitInstant are nowhere near that big.  The majority of Bitcoin Foundation members do not work for these two companies.  That's just silly paranoia.  Math fail.

^^

How many of those 242 do you think work for Mt Gox or bitinstant?

4% maybe...

It is just very sad that you guys don't see the corruption and issues, that could lead to the down fall of bitcoins in the next two years.

Would you invite others and allow them to find out about it, if you wanted to be corrupt? I wouldn't announce it publicly.
1704  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My open letter to Bitcoin Foundation on: December 30, 2012, 03:07:05 PM
We don't need a "Bitcoin Foundation seal" - there are many companies where you can get something like that ... http://www.truste.com/products-and-services/consumer_privacy/Seal_Comparisons

And here are 2 examples of services with security seals: Mt.Gox, CampBX

Also has anyone noticed you say one thing about the foundation and everyone from that elitist group attacks, this is why it will fail, it is a dictatorship so far. Again 2 business companies and a developer I see trouble ahead.

gweedo, what makes you so aggressive when it comes to the Bitcoin Foundation? When you take a look inside (2.5 BTC per year for an elitist group is quite cheap), you'll see it's just a group of 242  humans (right now) - and most of them are really friendly. Nobody forced me to pay 25 BTC and I don't regret it.
1705  Economy / Exchanges / Re: VIRWOX scam ? on: December 30, 2012, 02:55:19 PM
Been with virwox for over a year now and never had any issues  Smiley

Me too. VirWoX is very careful with user funds and may temporarily lock your account for suspicious activity (never happened to me), but they'll unlock it if you send them an email (unless you tried to scam VirWoX).

Also: I met Prof. Frank Kappe of VirWoX in real-life.

LOL. I've been waiting for a comment about Chaang Noi in the goat discussions^^
1709  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Linden Dollars <====> BTC on: December 20, 2012, 02:56:54 PM
+ they charge 2% for bitcoin withdraw, means if u withdraw 1 btc then you wil get 0.98.
It's .02 BTC no matter how much you withdraw.

It's .02/BTC Which Is 2% I Think.  Grin Roll Eyes

That's 2% if you buy only 1 BTC, but it's 0.02% if you buy 100 BTC.

Fees:

For market orders it depends on the currencies you're trading:

Quote
Currency |  Fixed fee |  Variable fee
EUR/SLL     50 SLL   2,90%
USD/SLL     50 SLL   2,90%
GBP/SLL     50 SLL   2,90%
CHF/SLL     50 SLL   2,90%
EUR/ACD   50 ACD   3,90%
USD/ACD   50 ACD   3,90%
SLL/ACD     25 ACD   3,90%
SLL/OMC     25 OMC   1,90%
EUR/OMC   50 OMC   2,90%
USD/OMC   50 OMC   1,90%
BTC/SLL     50 SLL   2,90%

For limit orders it depends on the SLL fees you paid within the last 30 days (for all currency trades):
Quote
Commission paid (last 30 days) | Discount | Trading fee
0 SLL                   0%   3,90%
1.000 SLL           10%   3,51%
2.000 SLL           20%   3,12%
5.000 SLL           30%   2,73%
10.000 SLL          40%   2,34%
20.000 SLL          50%   1,95%
50.000 SLL          60%   1,56%
100.000 SLL        70%   1,17%
200.000 SLL        80%   0,78%

This means: If you paid more than 5,000 SLL in trading fees over the last 30 days using the limit order tool is cheaper.
1710  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: A valid criticism of Bitcoin's design? on: December 18, 2012, 04:02:38 PM
QCs aren't really anything but theoretical right now.

This company claims it's not just theoretical (but I think those "quantum computers" - if they're real - can't break ECDSA right now): http://www.dwavesys.com/en/products-services.html
1711  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What will BTC be worth in 12 months on: December 18, 2012, 03:40:20 PM
There is aprox and there is mixing two unrelated numbers.
It would be like saving a Prius gets 60mpg and a Porsche can go 240 mph so a Prius is worth 1/4th as much as a Porsche. Smiley

So even as guestimate we need to look at same units.

Today BTC has an annual estimated* tx volume of ~$1,227 million and the money supply is ~$140 million.  This means the Bitcoin economy has a velocity of ~9 (each coin is exchanged 9 times per year on average).

If Bitcoin had tx volume equal to PayPal that is ~$71B tx per year.  If the velocity of 9 holds then the money supply would be valued at $71B /9 = $7.8B.  If we assume this happens in 4 years when there are ~16M BTC minted that would put the exchange rate at ~$486 USD:BTC.   It it happened in 8 years when there are ~18M BTC that would put the exchange rate closer to ~$432 USD:BTC.  Granted there is a lot of "guess" in that guestimate.  A large portion of the value of BTC is speculation and as Bitcoin gets larger and larger its growth will slow and the speculation premium will decline.  Also the velocity of 9 may not hold it could be much higher or lower in the future but it is a starting point.

* Blockchain.info looks at tx and attempts to estimate which output is the tx and which is the change.  It is a guesstimate only.

Nice summary. It's difficult to compare it tho:
* Someone could move 100k a few times and drastically increase the transaction volume.
* A lot of BTC are moved on web services (e.g. exchanges) without a transaction.

anybody? last chance, going to delete soon

You're asking for a 1.1 btc loan. If you default it's not worth calling a lawyer so nobody will do it (except if you have a bitcoiner in your neighborhood - but he might use a baseball bat if you default).

will payback 1.5 btc since its a risky loan scam, 2 days left and I delete thread

FTFY
1713  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What will BTC be worth in 12 months on: December 18, 2012, 01:35:26 PM
Compare with Paypal

Total amount of transactions in 2009 - 71 billion USD

Bitcoins in circulation 10 500 000

71 000 000 000 / 10 500 000 = 6761 usd/btc

This is just to have some approx. imagination

That's a strange comparison. If all Bitcoins are moved 100 times per year the value only has to be ~$70.00 on average to get to 71 billion USD transaction volume per year.
1714  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Has anyone had any success with VirWox or exchanging L$? on: December 18, 2012, 01:26:05 PM
I'm still waiting for them to respond.  VirWox is reputable from what I've read so I'm hoping they will at least return the funds.  I don't think I did anything out of the norm though so can't imagine what triggered them to lock my account.  I'm living in Malta at the moment and there aren't a lot of options here for purchasing BTCs.

Who locked your account? VirWoX or Second Life?

As for the SLLs I have on my avatar, I'm now reading that there are people who trade within Second Life and can transfer it back to my Paypal - at about a 20-30% loss though it seems.

I wouldn't do that...
1715  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What will BTC be worth in 12 months on: December 16, 2012, 04:49:26 PM
It'll depend more on the value of the currency you're comparing to than the value of bitcoin.

That's not true.  As more people around the globe start using bitcoins the more scarce they become, which increases their value.

It is true.

Quote
1 BTC = ~13.5 USD (right now)
1 USD = ~2 BRL

→ 1 BTC = ~27.00 BRL

Let's say a lot of people start investing in Brazilian real for some reason:

1 BTC = 90 USD ↑
1 USD = 0.25 BRL ↓

→ 1 BTC = 22.50 BRL ↓

With that said, I can see where "Some criticize Bitcoin for being a Ponzi scheme" can be assumed to have an issue. On the one hand, it is a factual sentence; there are sources that criticize it for this reason, that does not imply that it is a Ponzi scheme, that would be jumping to a conclusion not given by the text. It has been criticized for this, and that's something that is sourced, you can't "un-source" that; no matter what sources you present, it's going to somehow un-criticize Bitcoin, the criticisms are still there, it doesn't matter if you can "prove" with your personal logic and with sources that don't actually support your argument that it isn't one; you're disproving something not relevant. On the other hand, that multiple Bitcoin enthusiasts have misread this sentence thereby repeating the same flawed arguments over and over does indicate that a clarification would help. Perhaps the statement can be clarified to read "Some criticize Bitcoin, accusing it of being a Ponzi scheme." or something similar.

That's much better, because doesn't say "for BEING a Ponzi scheme".

After reading that talk page, I have never disliked a person as much as SudoGhost. Wikipedia should make sure their editors have an IQ of at least 80 IMO.

I have no doubts that his IQ is at least 80.  IQ isn't a measure of intelectual capacity, it's a (poor) metric intended to measure average learning comprehension rates.  For the developmentally delayed.  Any IQ number over 120 or so has no practical meaning.  From what I can see of SudoGhost he is more than capable of quickly learning to rationalize away his critics.

Are we talking about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emotional_intelligence ? (CAUTION: non-RS)

Anyway, lab created gold or not, I'm getting ready for $8/Oz gold

Shows how scarcity of gold (or anything) is really just artificial scarcity (limited by the constraints of technology at the time).  For fair comparison Bitcoins' scarcity is equally artificial it just happens to be by consensus of participants rather than elemental rarity.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/04/24/us-space-asteroid-mining-idUSBRE83N06U20120424

Indeed. Let's make some wikispeed-style spaceships and start interplanetary gold mining  Cheesy
1719  Economy / Economics / Re: What if gold is produced in lab? on: November 13, 2012, 12:59:28 PM
Then bitcoin would be the only medium of exchange that has a limited supply.

What do you think?

If someone finds (or already knows) a way to do this in a very cheap way, he/she/they won't inform you about it. If you're trying to produce something in lab you should start with platinum-190 Wink

If this was done on a scale that could be manufactured I would bet you would have a second classification similar to man made diamonds.  A lot of men would be happy to buy man made gold for their ladies.

Maybe, but if it's done correctly it'll be hard to find out if it's natural gold or man made gold.

or just continue them indefinitely...  Cheesy

If that'd happen many people would sell their Bitcoins. If you're not efficient at mining you have to leave the game.
1720  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Wikipedia: "Some criticize Bitcoin for being a Ponzi scheme..." on: November 12, 2012, 10:24:20 AM
Don't forget that they prefer reliable sources, and 404 pages certainly have that timeless quality that you get nowhere else! Cheesy

It's strange how Wikipedia accepts known media agencies as "reliable sources". It's not like media agencies actually verify the things they publish and many fake news have been published by a news agency and copied by 100+ other agencies without anyone verifying it.

The part: "Some criticize Bitcoin for BEING a Ponzi scheme" sounds like that's a fact, but it's not. There will always be some people who disagree with all this, but in this case some WP moderators have spelt it as if it's proven, but it's not - it's just THEIR opinion.

It should be more like: "Some people are arguing that Bitcoin might be a Ponzi scheme"
