1221  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Ethereum: 2nd gen cryptocurrency with contract programming, "dagger" hashing on: January 22, 2014, 10:07:04 PM
Pretty messed up seeing people discussing Ethereum on here from the point of view of "coin and profit," instead of "platform and possibilities." I guess it's mostly the same newbies that still see Bitcoin as just a coin/commodity to invest in, and not a financial platform to develop on top of. Personally, I would invest 20BTC in things like BitMessage and OpenTransactions, despite their "coins" themselves not having any value, just because the possibilities they offer as platforms are enormous! I will be investing in this as well. Not because of the possible return on the coins (though I suspect that will still be substantial), and not even because of the initially proposed technology (which, as someone pointed out, is similar to some other coins out there), but because of the team involved. Ask any top VC out there. They don't invest in ideas, they invest in people. It's also why Bitcoin will always be top coin, despite other altcoins constantly coming out with little fixes here and there. The quality, and quantity, of people working on it is way superior to any other alternatives.

<rant>
As for PoS, I really hope Ethereum doesn't take that route. PoW "decentralizes" the act of securing the currency from the currency itself. With PoW, I have a choice to either invest in the currency itself by buying it directly, OR invest in securing the currency by using it to buy mining hardware. There is also absolutely nothing to prevent a new miner from entering and competing with others, regardless of how many coins others hold. As a wealthy coin holder, I can't prevent a PoW miner from coming in and continuing to enforce rules on how I can spend my coins. The most I can do is spend some of my coins to buy some hardware and join him.
PoW I think you meant POS, on the other hand, incentivises, and in fact directs, the flow of money to one or few people, since you invest in "mining" by holding the coins themselves, and continue to increase your wealth by having those same coins collect even more coins. Threat of 51% in PoW is quickly resolved by having miners switch pools and redistribute themselves. Threat of a 51% in PoS can't be fixed by having mining wealth redistributed. Worst case end-game scenario in PoS is wealthy PoS miners continuing to accumulate wealth until they get a majority of the stake, while allowing users to become more and more dependent on their PoS coins, then the wealthy few pool their resources together, create a single, completely controling PoS stake, and change the coin to do whatever they want, including causing it to inflate. If you think PoS owners will be incentivized not to inflate away their wealth, think again. Central Banks around the world are PoS systems, and they do just that, printing more and more to buy up more and more assets, while letting those they sell their inflating money to pay for the inflation.
</rant>

To me, POW is such a waste of resources, we are spending millions on resources to mine BTC, it doesn't seem like the direction we should continue heading as the world struggles with limited resources.  The amount of power wasted mining BTC is absolutely atrocious.  Regarding your concerns with POS, read up on Transparent Forging.  POW is completely susceptible to corporate control, look at the mining pools, you are close to 51% with Ghash.io alone.  Meanwhile I'm forging Nxt right now on my RasPi.

Let me tell you all how linux desktop environments SUCK BALLZ

j*sushti*tyfu*kingc*rist

WTF linux?

Now Ive used unix/linux/freebsd for years and years.  Yes I am one of the few people who can actually say they've used 'real' unix.  I used to run an AT&T 5ess central office switch.  anyways, I also used to use openbsd desktop environment, successfully I might add, and have also run lots of misc little app/servers on freebsd/solaris.

so it not like Im some dumb tard off the street trying to try linux.

what is this BULLSHIT ubuntu 'unity' WM or X server or whatever the hell it is?  dammit when I ln -s something to ~/Desktop and the target is a bash script I FUCKING EXPECT TO BE ABLE TO RUN THE GODDAM SHELL SCRIPT!!!!  WTFFFFFF?

why does it always automatically mount my windows partition?  hell i manually unmount it and a few minutes later there it is again.

OK unity sucks.  so I found some instructions to change to gnome

ITS WORSE.  now NOTHING shows on my desktop!  I cannot even find an app list of stuff similar to windows start.

WTF linux why must you suck so bad?

Try Zorin OS.
1223  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: January 22, 2014, 06:54:45 PM

I would love for 10 of these to be running at the bitcoin conferences we are planning to go to.

at least one running would be super PR  Smiley
Cool idea! Better would be running ONLY ONE, because you NEED ONLY ONE to forge Nxt Smiley

Exactly, you could say, "I'm forging multiple accounts with this one RasPi."

Theoretically & I think practically you could forge all NXT on that RasPi...if you had 999 million Nxt in your account.

We should do an act where we come to an empty booth with just the raspi, plug it in, shrug, and leave for drinks.

Haha, then come back drunk and ask people if they've seen your RasPi.
1224  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: NXT coin - A total scam? on: January 22, 2014, 06:50:57 PM
So I thought the idea of NXT coin was pretty cool. I downloaded the Windows package and the fun began.

- Rather than being compressed with a normal program such as RAR or ZIP I had to go and find a program to unpack 7z as my WinZip wouldn't do it. Why the developers chose 7z is beyond me.

- The batch file method of starting NXT did not work, still does not work. I have to manually click the start.jar file for it to run. The port mentioned in the documentation does not even work, I had to use 127.0.0.1:7874

- I purchased some coins and waited... and waited.

- Having 750 coins now I am told I must wait 1049 days (down to 253d now) for the next block. Yeah that will happen.

My frustration at the packaging of the software was already there, yet I held out hope that I might enjoy this coin. Now having seen the ridiculous wait times I am selling my coins and abandoning this one.

In the GPU/CPU world, profits go to those who spent the most in their hardware. For a coin that is supposed to be Green and energy friendly, the concept of NXT was also disturbing to me because the rich get richer and the poor get nothing.

You have to outbuy the other guy to see profit. It becomes a competition. I'm also troubled by the fact that coins (which we all know can be premined/generated for free) are being sold from the top level down. I don't necessarily believe there were hundreds of BTC invested into these, I think the value was exaggerated. Why does someone have to invest into coins when you can just make coins available for nothing?

No, I won't be buying any more of these trying to beat the guy above me just for the sake of .18% profit. I gave it a shot but this one is not for me.

Thanks for trying it, sorry you didn't wait for Transparent Forging, it's where we are heading, and everyone will have an equal change to forge Nxt.

idea for marketing: NXT 0 energy  forging package

CubieTruck Cubieboard3           95$
4W solar panel         40$
Acount + 1000 NXT      70$

200$ marketing package

Love it.
1227  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Ethereum: 2nd gen cryptocurrency with contract programming, "dagger" hashing on: January 22, 2014, 05:39:27 PM
Since Ethereum needs a re-write, how long with the launch be delayed?  Can't be good for the Conference IPO announcement.

Nonsense, and I don't mean to be rude. But to say that something that's not yet deployed needs a rewrite simply doesn't make sense. Dagger is well understood and within the time it will take to get the main net going it will for sure receive many upgrades (some of them being organized as contests though the funding).

In short, fear not, Ethereum is coming and the early code on github demonstrates commitment not seen elsewhere.

It's okay, I'm used to people being rude to me on a daily basis, after all I'm married with two kids.
1228  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Ethereum: 2nd gen cryptocurrency with contract programming, "dagger" hashing on: January 22, 2014, 05:36:04 PM
Very promising project, I'll definitely watch this and invest a little.

I do think it should be PoS though. Any form of PoW will become obsolete at one point because of Moore's law, which is not suitable for a project that seems to be aimed to even remain valuable post-singularity.

interesting..

let's observe history & the projects with the Proof~of~work
what has it already told us?

Is it not healthy & wise to use proof~of~stoke scheme instead for the success & longivity of the
project?

how about learning what are some of the key factors thats contributing to other popular

BTCitcoin 2.0 decentralized trustless technology projects.. ( XCP, MSC, PTS, Etheruem)

One can only imagine with these (4) projects being greatly considered part of a descendent & well
diversified CryptoPortfolio of 2014

best regards
Peer2peer360 Group

This is one of the most confusing posts I have read this year.
1229  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: January 22, 2014, 05:20:40 PM

This is

a) brilliant and beautiful
b) a very good promo pic.

Posted as First look at a Nxt high-end forging rig!

POS is the future, imagine if you spend $20k on Nxt instead of mining rigs, you get valuable Nxt and forging abilities.  POW is so archaic.
but this is only for the first stage of Nxt, we won't be PoS forever

When we have branches of Nxt BlockChain, new coins, then yes we won't.  Nxt will still be the gold standard though.

My Nxt CubieTruck ran very well in the last 10 days.

The fact that we can run a forging Nxt client on a Pi is amazing.  Running on a solar powered Pi is mind boggling!
1232  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: January 22, 2014, 04:20:38 PM
I like the update of the website btw; http://www.nxtcrypto.org/

We need to put the Blockchain Explorer link back on the homepage of NxtCrypto.org
1233  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] NEX :: Nexus is an EXchange - Imagine Fairness! on: January 22, 2014, 12:18:13 AM
5% to NXT investors is actually fair , cos they are the ones who supported the NXT protocol so far and consequently NEX.
there would be no NEX without the current NXT investors.
5% is actually a very small portion of the pie in proportion to their contribution.

would be interesting to know what the specifics % numbers are for the total pie.
what % to people who say "interested" (btw interested!)
what % to dev
what % for bounties
this is what's missing in this thread.

I think a fair distribution would look something like this
70% equally distributed among the "interested"
10% developers (which are currently already receiving btcs)
10% for bounties
5% to the NXT investors
5% to be defined

also another thing which makes no sense.....how you gonna distribute manually to potentially thousands if not millions of interested ppl?
the obvious best way would be a well organized faucet to spread the NEX with captcha, ip recording and retweet activation (the retweet obviously also goof for spreading teh word).

also you may wanna refer to NEX as a fairness coin project......open a forum and maybe poll for name/logo/distribution model etc. and discuss ideas. there is no fairness without democracy.

FC, can you answer this question about the distribution?

Haha, yeah right, more like 70% to FC, 30% to who cares.

Interested... a little disappointed so far in the progress of nxt's decentralized exchange claim

Just a little, well that's better than a lot.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patience

So what do you guys think about NEM then?  Any different?

NEM won't be able to go ahead without full source, will it?
I trust utopianfuture, though.

Nope, nothing will happen until April, I suggested he build on top of the Nxt blockchain, would be way more successful. We are going to have many clones of Nxt, and the successful ones will be on top of Nxt blockchain and able to utilize features.
1236  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NEM] NEM - No Envy Movement - Discussion thread on: January 21, 2014, 11:26:19 PM
I apologize in advance for this question but why would it take until April to clone the code bases?  What exactly is a code base?

It is not easy to start a fork and a new genesis block with NXT code bases. We are going NXT codes but it has to be adapted to our new distribution scheme. So things take

time and probably need a good cryptographer to make it happen. So we will move forward but patience is needed.

Why not develop NEM on top of Nxt blockchain, you could be the first and it would be very successful.  Plus, you would have all the resources from CFB and JL to make it happen.

Actually I am still not 100% sure how it happend. We came to the conclusion that it must be a Keylogger/trojan BUT then they would have had access to many online wallets and exchanges, and ONLY my NXT accounts were compromised. So overall strange, but it could have been avoided with using Linux or upping my Windows security.

You followed a link from this user, who deleted his posts:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=120275

And you downloaded hacked program from this newbie:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=170751;sa=showPosts
What is this about?  It is not clear from the links.

BTW.  I take it as policy to delete old postings that are no longer relevant.  Why not?

Well, i got hacked, and he states the 2 links that i used before i was hacked.

Damn, good work salsacz.  Do not download anything other than the official client from JLP OP.
1239  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: January 21, 2014, 11:00:36 PM
so in a few days, we'll also be on vircurex.  next week nexern release.  interesting times.

Yeah, I'm sure there will be more big announcement in the coming weeks.  Nxt is still very early stage and a good value in my opinion.  Wait until we take over the SR market, which will be soon.
1240  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: January 21, 2014, 10:53:15 PM
Is it known yet when a client with noticeable improved features will come out? Anything else (marketing wise or something) upcoming these days?

Any info on this?

Yes, there will be a big client release (nexern) in about two weeks.  It will be a cross platform one click desktop client (open-source).  There will be several new features implemented and ongoing development of some really interesting new features.  That's my understanding.
