1221  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: The paradox of arbitrage betting (and how to make money on it) on: March 09, 2022, 03:51:11 PM
This is a completely wrong example of arbitrage. No matter how "confident" you are in the outcome of the battle, it may end differently. The meaning of arbitration is in guarantees. Your premonition and analytics do not guarantee anything.
If you're sure about Jalin Turner (1.67) and Kevin Holland (1.26), just bet on them and take the easy money, right?

Jalin Turner (1.67) and Kevin Holland (1.26) together is only worth only (2.10).

The way the arbitrage I posted works is, one side is (4.90) the other side is (3.58).

Bet 1 mBTC on both sides, 1st parlay pays out 3.90 mBTC and 2nd pay sout 2.58 mBTC.

Total winnings come out to either 2.90 mBTC or 1.58 mBTC once the 1 mBTC loss from the losing leg is factored in.

Its a guaranteed win as long as the lock plays hold up.

...

Arbitrage is a strategy where winning becomes possible on both sides of an outcome.

Asking for guarantees in the context of sports gambling, where there never are guarantees unless games are rigged.

Is like asking for water that isn't wet.

This is a good format for turning uncertain sporting events into arbitrage opportunities.

Which is the best anyone could hope for given the circumstances.
1222  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: The paradox of arbitrage betting (and how to make money on it) on: March 09, 2022, 02:31:17 PM
The formula for arbitrage plays in sports gambling looks like this IMO.

To cite an example, consider the last UFC event:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_272

Let's say you were fairly certain Jalin Turner (1.67) and Kevin Holland (1.26) would win their fights.

But didn't have an idea of who would win the fight between Ludovit Klein (2.33) and Devonte Smith (1.70).

Make 2 parlays

Ludovit Klein(2.33), Jalin Turner(1.67), Kevin Holland(1.26) = (4.90)

Devonte Smith(1.70), Jalin Turner(1.67), Kevin Holland(1.26) = (3.58)

That's one potential method of turning uncertain matches (with good odds) into arbitrage winners as long as the locks hold up.
1223  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: March 09, 2022, 02:13:04 PM
There are good fights scheduled for this weeks UFC.

Alex Pereira vs. Bruno Silva
Damon Jackson vs. Kamuela Kirk
Drew Dober vs. Terrance McKinney
Thiago Santos vs. Magomed Ankalaev
Marlon Moraes vs. Song Yadong
Sodiq Yusuff vs.   Alex Caceres

Alex Pereira has a KO win over Israel Adesanya in kickboxing. Now he's making a run in the UFC.

only Edson Barboza disappointed me

Barboza is an interesting case. He was outwrestled by Khabib Nurmagomedov and Kevin Lee.

Despite this, Barboza could still have the best leg kicks in the game.

Bryce Mitchell was limping noticeably after the fight from the few leg kicks he absorbed.

Gilbert Melendez was quoting as saying if someone offered him $1,000 to take another leg kick from Edson Barboza, he wouldn't do it.

1224  Other / Off-topic / Re: Could Trump be the right choice for the ownership of Chelsea. on: March 09, 2022, 02:00:48 PM
In the united states, Trump is known to draw big crowds at conventions. The same precedent has applied to Trump public appearances in india and abroad. It is possible chelsea could expand their fanbase by having Trump be involved with their brand. More spectators could flock to stadiums to watch chelsea games if Trump were present in the crowd. Which might be correlated with greater ticket sales and public exposure. And of course, there are many who might watch chelsea games on TV if Trump endorsed it, which could lead to higher ratings.

Yes there definitely could be advantages to involving Trump in the ownership and management of a sports brand.

Trump has owned and managed the "Miss Universe" pageant in the past. Trump was also involved with the mixed martial arts promotion Affliction, along with his reality TV show The Apprentice(which I'm not a fan of). He does have experience in the sports and entertainment industry which could contribute to success in owning a sports franchise.
1225  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Blame Game in gambling on: March 09, 2022, 01:52:12 PM

They're labeling the gambling industry as predatory.

Being someone who follows the news, I remember a time when college university recruiters were approaching homeless people on the street offering to sign them up for government education loans. Of course, the homeless had little chance of benefiting from a college education. It was a predatory move made by universities to boost their profit margins. Today the united states has a student loan bubble as a result.

Its more typical to hear of similar stories in many industries today, than it is for these type of predatory practices to not exist.

And so I wonder if the gambling industry can singled out as being predatory, when the term may apply more broadly to our global standard.

1226  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: March 04, 2022, 11:30:26 AM
The drama is real.

They were friends until Colby Covington said Jon Jones used steroids in college and threatened to disclose Tyron Woodley having skeletons in his closet that could land him in prison. All of the brazilians were mad after Colby said brazil is a dump and brazilians are filthy animals. Fabricio Werdum went so far as to hit Colby over the head with a boomerang in australia.

After that, it seemed like influential people in and out of the MMA industry put pressure on Jorge Masvidal to kick their friendship to the curb. And that's exactly what he did.

Colby is a talented fighter and I respect what he can do in the cage, but I'm not a fan of his snitch antics where he airs everyone's dirty laundry.
1227  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: March 03, 2022, 02:30:15 PM
Well, positioning is more important with Grappling or wrestling, and the way Islam Makhachev has done it, he surely moves faster and clearly, he knows where to position himself to take the advantage, and because of the cage wall, he surely made grappling dangerous, and more effective with his Dagestan chain wrestling, Khabib Nurmagomedov has said in an interview that Islam Makachev is a different fighter right now.

Most wrestling is structured around getting takedowns, points and pins.

Grapplers and BJJ is more about getting chokes and subs.

There are positions in grappling that could never be found in wrestling. Things like pulling guard and taking the back don't exist in wrestling AFAIK. Wrestlers who don't train grappling aren't good in those positions. Bobby Green got finished in a grappling position which he might never see in wrestling. Something similar could be said about Gaethje losing to Khabib. Etc.

I don't know what is their History on where their grudge match has started, but I really know they are close friends and I think this could have a deeper reason behind this, but apart from this maybe, I am not 100% sure this could also part of the hype, and because they don't want a match with Khamzat Chimaev, they surely made their own match, I really don't know if this is planned but I am just saying what is bugging inside my head, I could also be wrong and this is just hearsay of a thought.

From 2017 to 2019 Colby said Jon Jones used steroids. Colby said he had info on Tyron Woodley that could put him in jail if needed. Colby called brazilians filthy animals. Colby said things that put pressure on people to turn on him and throw him under a bus. Eventually, I think Jorge Masvidal obliged.

Now Colby is saying things about Jorge Masvidal. He says Masvidal abandoned his ex wife and kids.
1228  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The world of sport reacts to the Russian invasion of Ukraine on: March 03, 2022, 02:10:15 PM
Could these bans cause many russians who do not support the invasion of ukraine.

To become more united under Putin. More supportive of the ukraine invasion. In retaliation for these heavy handed measures being directed towards them.

I get that this is supposed to hurt Putin and russia but have people considered it could have the opposite effect.

It is similar to Justin Trudeau declaring martial law in canada and seizing funds donated to truck protestors.

Russians will be angry. Who will they blame for this? Putin or foreigners with their sanctions and cancel culture.
1229  Economy / Economics / Re: This shows Putin got the costs of aggression wrong on: March 01, 2022, 05:31:22 PM
I think we are mixing macro and micro economy here. Profits from companies are different from purchasing power and people do notice the difference in my view.

If general motors profits $1,000 for every 1 unit of automobile sold.

And the US dollar exchange rate with the british pound is 1:1.

Great britain could purchase 100 units of GM automobile which translates to $100,000 in profits.

If however the US dollar devalues and the exchange rates shifts to a 1:2 ratio in favor of the pound.

Great britain could purchase 200 units of GM automobile (at the same price they could buy 100 units at a 1:1 currency ratio) which translates to $200,000 in profits for GM.

This is a method of boosting GDP numbers for nations like china with high exports.

These gains come at the expense of reduced purchasing power for consumers.

There are trade offs involved and of course the conditions will not be as drastic as the ones mentioned.

Still an interesting topic for discussion/debate IMO.

What does macro vs micro have to do with it? This is currently implemented and utilized in economies of the world. Its standard policy.

People notice the difference? This has been ongoing for many years. Decades. No one noticed.
1230  Economy / Economics / Re: What if Russia economy grows higher after the war on: March 01, 2022, 05:11:42 PM

It seems to me that russia wants the land adjacent the capathian mountain range as a natural defensive perimeter. That would appear to be one tangible gain they're targeting.

Whether their ambitions run beyond that, I cannot guess. Russia has threatened to invade nearby states like finland and sweden who are not members of NATO in the past.

I think the above partly summarizes russia's ambitions with ukraine.

If russia can expand outward they can project their military force further throughout europe.

Over the long term, what this means is some european nations could come to fear russia more than they fear the european union. Some may abandon the EU to ally with russia instead as they feel the winds of influence and power change.

We may be witnessing the initial stages of this shift with syria and others becoming allies of russia. It is possible that in the future, russia will dethrone the european union to become the dominant power in europe. If that indeed has not already happened.
1231  Economy / Economics / Re: The ruble is going to hell on: March 01, 2022, 05:03:18 PM

The ruble appears to be ranked 17th, which shows a decline.

Inflation and currency devaluation are both interesting and confusing to me. I thought venezuela, argentina and turkey were in dire straits given the state of their inflation which greatly overshadows russia's current numbers.

But it seems that to native turks, their inflation is merely business as usual and nothing to get excited about. And so I wonder what true effects a bit of inflation will have upon russia's overall economy, if any. Given that we have seen other nations achieve far worse inflation, without it appearing to be sufficient to drive native born citizens to revolt against the government or engage in other drastic measures. The only tangible effect of inflation appears to be greater poverty and declined standard of living. Everything else remains intact.
1232  Economy / Economics / Re: Renewable energy transition is expensive, but is resilient on: March 01, 2022, 04:58:04 PM

I would need some source for this.

The reason many wind and solar installations are being implemented, involves them being the most affordable and easiest solutions available. The market is often the best indicator of value.

A high percentage of bitcoin mining operations are powered by renewable energy due to its low price. In cases where bitcoin mining is powered by coal, it is typically state subsidized and a recipient of government welfare.

The above represents the norm.

There are many misleading charts on the internet which compare solar versus the cost of coal fuel. They do not include the total cost of coal operations.
1233  Economy / Economics / Re: West should start de-coupling from Putin's Russia energy supplies on: March 01, 2022, 04:41:00 PM
Lack of oil supply is driving oil and gasoline prices in the united states to record highs.

Decoupling from russian oil might cause oil to become a scarcer commodity in the USA, driving gasoline and oil prices even higher.

This is a concern many have voiced for days now:

https://www.foxnews.com/media/watters-biden-sanctions-russia-putin

Is it fair to say Putin's invasion of ukraine is a topic for the european union to address. It primarily affects their region of the world. And ultimately they are the ones who will have to live with the results.
1234  Economy / Economics / Re: Renewable energy transition is expensive, but is resilient on: March 01, 2022, 04:34:55 PM
Wind energy received bad publicity when wind turbines in texas froze in 2021. But their issue was not spending the extra capital to install cold weather packages on turbines to allow them to produce energy in a colder than normal winter. Cold regions like alaska are known to rely heavily upon wind power during their coldest winters. The technology is viable for cold northern regions if they have the year round wind to drive them.

Ukraine and russia have remained in a standoff since 2014 with cessation of hostilities in crimea. Overt moves to whittle away russia's oil or nuclear fuel markets could have brought the relatively peaceful standoff to its end.

The cost of renewable energy per watt is generally lower than fossil fuel based energies like oil or coal. State based subsidies are the main market drivers for energy generation with a larger carbon footprint.

Solar panels are primarily constructed from refined silicon which can be made from processed sand. Silicon is abundant, non toxic and can be found everywhere.

The main grievance against renewable energy comes from rare earth minerals which are primarily used in electric motors, generators and lithium batteries. It is possible this complaint will become less critical over time with tesla's next generation of battery technology, which was designed and engineered to use less rare earth mins than their previous tech.
1235  Economy / Economics / Re: This shows Putin got the costs of aggression wrong on: March 01, 2022, 04:07:57 PM
...

This appears to be a good test for the "devaluing currency is good for exports" school of economic thought.

That is not a school of thought properly, but the usual lame excuse of governments that fail to remain competitive.

AFAIK many corporations define their profits in terms of units sold. For sake of discussion let's invent a random statistic: general motors reaps $1,000 in profit for every 1 unit of automobile sold. If the united states can devalue its native fiat currency by 100%. This enables them to sell 2 units for the price of 1, which might double their profits. This is one methodology behind currency devaluation being a worthwhile policy for nations with high exports.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, currency devaluation weakens the purchasing power of consumers.

While currency devaluation might appear good for exports and corporations, they can be bad for the purchasing power of individuals. And so they may represent a trade off where the strength of a currency is sacrificed for a better corporate balance sheet and perhaps better GDP stats.
1236  Economy / Economics / Re: Putin next steps and where it may fail spectacularly on: February 28, 2022, 03:26:31 PM
Nuclear bombs don't work this way.
This is Hiroshima, 1945,1946,1948, 1953

By 1950 it had 285,712 poeple living there and now more than 1 million.

If the fireball of the nuclear detonation touches the surface, it produces large quantities of radioactive dust, which are long term hazardous to human health.

If the nuclear weapon is detonated at altitude, and the fireball doesn't touch the surface, as was the case with hiroshima. Considerably less radioactive dust is produced, drastically improving chances of survival.

Curvature of the earth and horizon line of sight limits also affect the distance the blast radius is able to cover. A spotter positioned on a cliff can "see" further than a person at ground level. Likewise a nuke detonated at higher altitude will "spread" to cover a wider distance, than one detonated at ground zero.

There is also a powerful EMP burst produced by nuclear detonation which destroys electronics.
1237  Economy / Economics / Re: Ukraine Raising donations in Crypto. USA need to favor Crypto on: February 28, 2022, 02:26:29 PM
In the current situation Ukraine government is asking for donations in cryptocurrency to support Ukraine. Their citizens are also depositing their money to crypto for easy usage in the current situation.

In this situation do you not think USA has to support crypto?

The internet in myanmar was shutdown during their last military crisis. Its possible russia could seek to shutdown the internet in ukraine, which could cut off banking services and crypto.

It could be worthwhile for ukraine to invest in satellite based internet service such as starlink, which cannot be shut down as easily.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1497701484003213317

The united states is currently in a state of conflict with cryptocurrencies. There are some states like texas which have large scale crypto mining operations fueled by newly constructed wind farms. These US states trend towards being pro crypto. While other US states lean in the opposite direction. The federal government could try to force crypto regulation but I think some individual US states might resist. It could turn into a state sovereignty issue.

Parts of the US support crypto, while other parts do not. Which tends to complicate matters.

Russia will force companies to sell 80% of their foreign currency earnings - in other words buy rubles - Finance Ministry announces

We have reports on russia's stock market taking hits:

Quote
Russia's Stock Market Won't Open Monday

Russia's central bank said Monday that the Moscow Exchange wouldn't open for stock trading, the latest move to contain the financial fallout from President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine.

It also said derivatives markets would remain closed. The central bank added that the operating hours of the exchange would be announced Tuesday morning.

Russia's financial system has been rocked in recent days by an onslaught of Western sanctions. The Russian ruble plunged to a record low in the European morning. The MOEX benchmark for Russian stocks slid last week. Before its afternoon decision, the Bank of Russia delayed trading in other financial markets.

https://www.wsj.com/livecoverage/russia-ukraine-latest-news-2022-02-28/card/kLVgZhp5euuV1BfDlhb1

It is hard to find known sources, who are willing to stake their reputations on publishing some of the other claims being made on russian's economy however.

This appears to be a good test for the "devaluing currency is good for exports" school of economic thought.
1239  Economy / Economics / Re: Inflation hits Russia on: February 28, 2022, 01:59:37 PM
Over the last decade, I think the quantity of food russia natively produces has steadily risen, as they have sought to become more independent and rely less on foreign imports. Not many remember the war in crimea which occurred back in 2014. The last war in ukraine which occurred roughly 8 years ago. Since then, it appears russia has taken steps to harden their economy against events like sanctions. Certianly we have many reports in the media claiming that russia's economy is in dire straits and being hit hard. Yet it is entirely possible that rumors of russia's economic demise are premature and exaggerated at best.

Russia being the 3rd largest producer of oil in the world, would appear to have their energy sector covered. Russia may also be the largest provider of nuclear fuel in the world. Their food production is likely up to the task of self sufficiency, as I believe they export some of the food they produce abroad.

They have also very obviously taken steps to segregate their networks and communications from global communication any way they can to prevent electronic interference.

Areas where russia could be vulnerable may be semiconductors and other items which are already difficult to obtain in global markets. But I do not think that would greatly affect the distribution of military power or anything that is relevant.

I don't think there are any easy methods to disrupt russia's economy which is currently structured to be resistant to inflation more than all other major economies in the world. I don't think these negative headlines about russia's economy will age well. But we can see.
1240  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: February 28, 2022, 01:49:54 PM
I think Bobby Green displayed the same vulnerability Justin Gaethje, Dustin Poirier, Drew Dober and others from a wrestling background have shown. They have good wrestling but lack jiu jitsu. The positions wrestlers get finished in are ones they don't often see in wrestling, which are much more common in grappling.

This week we have the grudge match between Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal. It somewhat resembles the grudge matches between TJ Dillashaw and Cody Garbrandt where they were friends and training partners that trained in the same gym who ended up not liking one another. Every fight at this event could be worth watching, lots of good athletes and competitors for this one. Jon Jones and Rashad Evans also had their grudge match back in the day, and reconciled afterward.

The relationship between Colby and Jorge was the closest out of any falling out. When Colby was broke and had no money he was sleeping on Jorge Masvidal's couch and eating his food. I'm glad the lead up to the fight hasn't turned out as ugly and personal as it might have.

With the TJ Dillashaw vs Cody Garbrandt grudge match, it seemed to me that team alpha male began to invent lies about TJ Dillashaw which could have returned to them in the form of karma. That fight got very personal and ugly and it was not a good thing to see.
