and thats on land. the ocean is less forgiving.

Can we all move in with you? It sound very reassuring there.

In return for food, power and guns I can offer toast making, as long as it's your bread and you're not too fussy, and I'll keep my room tidy.

depends. youll have to meet our cats standards, which are much higher than ours.

you would also have to be ok with extremely loud music at all times of the day and night, mostly pink floyd, rush, lynyrd skynyrd and other southern rock, and punk. and the music the wife and i play on our instuments; hers played well and mine that sucks. plus random weapons fire at any time.

any negatives?

LOL   right?

When the guy next door to me moved in (the dude with the 69 Camaro drag car I have posted before) the first words he said to me were "hi, were your loud new neighbors".  Well, my band is in the front room, half stack, 400W of bass, drummer is a hitter, PA...we get along swimmingly.

I have always preferred to have noisy neighbours so that they don't complain if/when I want to be really noisy too. Would hate to have a "full silence lover maniac" as neighbour... especially one that wouldn't understand that the problem is theirs and should better isolate their home or buy some fucking earplugs if they are so maniac about it.
I would end up punching you in the face. Probably repeatedly. And worse if eventually getting out of prison for it was on the table.

I have this theory that humans fundamentally do not like other humans. We simply need one another to survive.

You are one of the last people I would have said was one of those full silence maniacs.

Contrary to you I DO indeed like (most) other humans. I just ask they mind their own business as I do with mine.

@The Pharmacist

I have not really studied the merit system as much as you guys do as I am mostly here for the speculation (WO) subsection. But I do know about free float. I mean, if everyone suddenly decided to mostly just merit OG's like Satoshi, Finney, Theymos, etc... there would be no "free float" for people to rank up so Theymos would probably just increase the available sources (yeah, inflation).

I am sure he is taking an eye on how many Merits need to be introduced into the system for the ranking up going at the right pace while at the same time getting rid of shitposters/spammers that add nothing of value to the community.

So, in the end, it doesn't really matter that much in the medium/long term how many of the merits go to OG's (that probably more than deserve them even if they don't "need" em) as Theymos can adjust the free-float accordingly by just increasing the merit source amounts per month.

And yeah, I completely agree with you in that nothing gives me more pleasure than recognising potential on a newer member and being able to give him some merit instead of just mechanically meriting a really good post coming from someone that routinely produces them (or did in the past).
2047  Other / Meta / Re: Plagiarism as a result of cultural differences on: January 14, 2019, 01:28:37 PM
<...>
In the Spanish local set of rules, rule number 33 (33. Posting plagiarized content is not allowed.[e]) is not included ... Rules stop at number 28, an thus lack the last 5 added rules in the translation. This is due to the fact that the post that includes the rules has not been edited since March 2017.
The author of the translation has barely been active during 2018, and thus has not been updating the post. I brought this to the attention of the local moderators, but have not since heard back.

The above non-sync between the rules written in English and those translated into local languages also happens on other local boards (last time I checked), and I posted about it here some time ago.

There are certain important threads whose ownership perhaps should be either be that of “the forum”, or at least transferrable by the moderator for cases such as these (with the pertinent tries to get the OP to sync the post himself as a first instance).

That really looks like something that should be fixed.

From what I have seen, Theymos is usually way more receptive to specific viable solutions than unsolvable problems. For example, the way he handled the WO thread "issue" was absolutely perfect for everyone involved. And that was WAY more complex and even involved some considerable effort on his part and some minor changes to the forum.

So maybe if you or some of the other well standing members that are also involved in the Spanish forum would offer to fill the "position" it could be a straightforward process. Of course assuming dserrano is not really interested anymore or welcomes some help in there.

P.S.: dserrano5 - Last Active:   October 17, 2018, 04:46:01 AM - I don't think he is really that much interested anymore from what I see.

P.S.2: My mistake I see that the moderators of the Spanish local subforum are:

VGO - Last Active:   November 09, 2018, 08:22:03 PM
frankcuestein - Last Active:   January 01, 2019, 08:58:23 PM

Still not that much interested I guess, except maybe for frankcuestein.
2048  Other / Meta / Re: Plagiarism as a result of cultural differences on: January 14, 2019, 12:33:42 PM
I think the clarification of what is meant by "plagiarism" stated later in the rules is pretty clear no matter what culture they are from.

~snip~
33. Posting plagiarized content is not allowed.[e]

~snip~
33. This includes both copying parts or the entirety of other users' posts or threads and copying content from external sources (e.g. other websites) and passing it as your own.

~snip~

Also, since I am a typical dumb American, I am monolingual. Therefore, I am not certain if a translated copy of the rules are available on the local boards. However, I believe many of the local boards do have a stickied post that gives users some idea what the rules are. If this is lacking, perhaps a push to make sure rules are available in as many languages as possible is in order. The challenge is finding capable users willing to do it.

I can say a copy of the translated rules in the local Spanish board does exists. I have not read it, but I can say the translation of "plagiarism" to Spanish would not really cover what I have seen in the bans appeals about plagiarism. I mean, reusing an inconsequential phrase from another post, that constitutes no original work of a certain value (ie, something that could be covered by copyright/intellectual property) would be no plagiarism.

Most (if not all) of the examples of banned users for "plagiarism" I have seen could obviously be considered complete shitposting though. And it is also obvious they don't offer anything of value to the forum (at least in those posts)... but it is not that they are attributing to themselves another person intelectual property just because of paraphrasing a worthless phrase/statement.

Not that I have ever do that (AFAIK) but I really learned what is considered "plagiarism" here by reading about those bans appeals that really surprised me on first instance.

I will now read the Spanish translation and see if it is clear enough or if some additional clarification would be needed to better be safe than sorry.

P.S.: After checking the translation of the rules in the Spanish local forum I see only rules up to 28 have been included:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=705523.0

There's nothing about plagiarism at least in the OP. Please someone correct me if I am wrong as I barely frequent the local forum.

Don't know the situation of other local subforums.
2049  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: January 14, 2019, 12:06:12 PM

I do not understand these people, what is the logic of giving Merit to a person who has more and more)
Honestly, I don't get that either.  Giving merits to Theymos or Satoshi is just like wasting them, even if the posts are fantastic.  sMerits have a utility other than rewarding good posts (it allows people to rank up), and I think people either forget that or don't care.

I guess everybody has their own criteria for merit sending and, unless trying to obtain a benefit or trick the system, it is fair use. I, for once, have given my "obligued" merit to Satoshi, also because another reason for merits is to remark good posts no matter if the recipient "needs" the merits or not. That being said, I try harder to give merits to more "junior" members where I see potential than I do to Legendaries that don't really "need" it.

IIRC, I have only sent a single Merit to Satoshi, even if he would deserve way more. Not sure if I already sent any to Theymos or even Hal Finney, even if I am sure I would do if smerits weren't that scarce.

In other words, my requirements for a meritable post are harder when it comes to "well-fed" Legendary members but since most good (according to my very subjective and occasionally ridiculous criteria) posts usually come from them it is fair most merit go to them too.

I don't think giving credit where it is due is "wasting them" even if the recipients "don't really need it".
2050  Other / Meta / Re: All the merit received by theymos to be distributed among the Merit Sources? on: January 14, 2019, 11:32:17 AM
Theymos Smerits are like Satoshi coins. Even if he doesn't want to move them, they are rightfully of him.

Plus, according to BPIP.org he is only hodling around the same amount he has sent... And he could create them out of thin air if he wanted, it's not like anything is being "lost" here.

2051  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 14, 2019, 10:51:07 AM

if you only had a window into price in $ and NOTHING else, it would be an insufficient info, obviously.
...

Yes...and $$ inflation highlights just one example in which the future price snapshot has little value.

Say also that you find out the price on date x would be $200. What action can you take right now ?

How can you know if the structure of BTC will be the same ? How can you know what fork can have happened, and whether consensus has changed the issuance of units ? What if the price was $20000 just  a few months after your chosen date, for unknown technical reasons ?

..and that is just the guesses we can make. How about the unknown unknowns ?

You're right in many respects of course, but I still think it would be well worth 10 BTC to know the price on a given date over two years ahead. Would you turn down the chance?

I would probably choose a not so far date (ie less than a year ahead) so I could go all in into longing/shorting. As majormax says, in the interim of long term many things can happen.

The price I would pay would depend on how much financial resources I would be sure I could allocate or raise to take advantage of the forecast and also taking into account that if the price on that specific date would be similar to current one it would be directly a loss of the paid price.

Yup, very bearish.... maybe not in the short term, but we are not anywhere near a proper bull run it seems... As expected.

This is being so 2014-2015 that it is almost surprising.

Jbear

In your opinion, what are the odds that CSW is Satoshi?

I would be interested in you stating in clear terms what probability you consider this to be true?  I appreciate that certain things may be unknowable with present knowledge, but that is why we assign probabilities.

So please tell us what is your probability that CSW is Satoshi.

I dunno. Maybe one in twenty? In fifty?

Hard to place odds on something in which most of the variables are not available to be seen.

It is nice to see that you are placing low odds on CSW being satoshi, and even conceding that a decent amount of information remains unknown.

On the other hand, I find it a bit ironic that you were cluttering this thread with ideas that the negative had not been adequately proven or that there is really any kind of need to spend WO brain power on such question regarding that fucktwat who is most-likely a fraudster.

IIRC, jbreher also stated in the past that he didn't think CSW was satoshi or that it was doubtful and unlikely. It is also true that he has been more clear this time making a specific guess that more closely express his opinion about the unlikeliness chance.

I'm out at the site. Moored up for the evening after getting the spar anchored.

Are you going to just visit or to live/sleep there in the seastead?

I really can't even imagine how it would be to live in it. Eager to hear your comments on the real life experience.

I have completely lost my "touch". Never know anymore when it is going to go up or down next. Most of the time it just looks like 50% to me. Fortunately I just keep scalping here and there... but man this sucks.
