My question is that in your title you write WW5. Did we already have WW3 and WW4 and I didn't even notice?
Yes, but don't worry. I was busy watching Game of Thrones too.

It's not a war despite how a whole lot of people try and turn everything these days into a "war". Nor do I see any sort of coordinated effort. It's mostly been reactions to date as opposed to being out ahead of things. I would consider a coordinated effort having the entire scientific community world wide working together on this with some group overseeing the efforts to ensure there is no duplicated i.e. waster effort and splitting up the various efforts to complete things as quickly as possible. Do we see that? We hear practically squat about any of that which is how this will eventually be beaten. Everything else is just reaction and containment. In other words, all I see is a bunch of chickens with their heads cut off running around spreading panic and fear.

I agree with you there is no formal top-down control, more like a group of planes flying more or less in formation in about the same direction.

As for the panic and fear, there are those who consider playing those cards appropriate for the greater good. Example, agitators on the subject of climate change. Nothing new in that.

@Viper1 though this is not an official war but each and every country’s prime minister, or presidents are terming it as war to make their citizens understand the gravity of the situation, but they’re yet not uniting even in these times is ridiculous.
They're calling it a war in the same way they use fear and panic. It's to manipulate people so they can justify the things to come. It was so easy to get the military out there helping. It was so easy to close the borders. No one bats an eye or even thinks to question it in any way at all. Look at Italy and having to fill paper work out to justify why you're out and about. Much more is coming and then many things will remain after as they'll be able to justify it to people one way or another. Just look at all the shit they did after 9/11. There's already talk and apparently plans (that always existed but have put in a readiness mode) for martial law scenarios. The more you hear them start talking about it, trying to make it sound less scary, the more you know it's likely. Things like this are how they slowly but surely remove freedoms.

Maybe you are correct, maybe you are partially correct, or not correct. It's certainly possible as an outcome. For example, some controller-personality type might promote the tracking of all airline passengers, pre and post flight. Allegedly for reasons of advance prediction of pandemic. Then the data gets used, say, against persons dealing illegal drugs.

I don't know, and you don't know. But your cautioning people on the possible side effects of restrictions on personal liberties is certainly warranted.

Now Trump is openly terming COVID-19 as Chinese Viru....

Do you have a problem with calling the virus from China the Chinese Virus?
Yes, when it's being done for purely political purposes which is what they're doing. These things do not get named for their location of origin which is a clear indication that they're doing it for other reasons.

Opposition to naming/calling it the Chinese/Wuhan Virus came directly from Chinese influences, exactly what you are calling "purely political purposes." Then you have an American reaction to that pushiness, which again you may call "purely political purposes."

But why allow one, and not the other?

I don't have internet at home so I have to go out to coffee shops and internet cafes in order to share my sagacity with this forum...and to watch a little porn.

Unfortunately all this hard work in the interest of humanity is making me kind of ill.  Dry cough, slight fever, etc, but some of my favorite coffee shops have cushy chairs upon which I can wipe the snot (and jizm) off my hand.

I am glad you are doing reasonably well, given the circumstances. However I have some bad news. You will have to find another time to climb.

Mt. Everest is closed.
1707  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Nationalisation on: March 19, 2020, 05:26:36 PM
The Coronavirus is already hitting major economies hard, and the worst is yet to come. Many businesses are going to get hit really badly. At the moment it is airlines and travel companies bearing the brunt of it, but this will extend throughout society as quarantines and restrictions go on with no end date in sight.

We are seeing the first indications of (re)nationalisation of some companies:
France ready to nationalise virus-stricken companies
Spain has nationalised private hospitals
Italy is renationalising an airline

Is this the start of a wide-ranging renationalisation program? Governments are attempting to inject cash and put other measures in place to prop up stricken companies, but it seems likely this will be difficult. Fundamentally, when there is a crisis such as this, private companies competing against one another are ill-equipped to maintain the day-to-day running of a country. It seems that government control is the only way to do it.

Thoughts?

There is also in the US "Defense Priority" orders. When a private company is presented with such an order from the government, he must fill it first.

There are ways to control the private companies without formally nationalizing them.
1708  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Coronavirus: International Updates on: March 19, 2020, 05:20:21 PM
Russia confirms first death.
London subway closes 40 stations to contain virus.
Panama is put on night curfew.
Venezuela is currently at 36 cases.
China declares first 24 hours without new cases reported since the outbreak, pledges to aid international efforts.
Spain adds 209 deaths in the last 24 hours.
Germany over 10k cases.
Colombia over 100 cases.
France warns quarantine will probably take longer.
US Congressman Mario Diaz Balart confirmed case.

The China number could probably be interpreted as "significantly fewer new cases."

I think that we should all demand, no matter our politics that our elections are observable by the public and leave a paper trail, like other countries. Voting machines should be banned and votes should be counted publicly. The process has to be protected.

I agree. Last time I voted, there was a paper ballot that you inserted into a machine. Then you would check the boxes with a pen. Then it somehow generated a square code with your checkboxes and printed it on the ballot.

So this is a hybrid - a paper ballot that absolutely could be manually tabulated, but which also could be machine read.

Clever!

It makes me wonder, who stands to benefit from this contradictory, and obviously misleading information?  Who stands to gain if the Trump administration is made to look like a bunch of inept, babbling buffoons?  The obvious answer is the Democrats, but I don't think that's where it stops.

Who else?  Possibly the people who are responsible for the virus in the first place?
...

Quite possibly. America has politicians who can be bought, and stock ownership in its news companies can be bought. For some time we've been seeing what might be characterized as international interests influencing and disrupting things here.
1711  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Trump vs Germany in a bid to acquire vaccines for US only. on: March 18, 2020, 10:34:04 PM

It probably went along the lines of -- I can make this amount of vaccines, and Trump said he wants them all for his own people. Wouldn't that make the most sense to you?

What makes sense to me is that the owner of that company listens to the offers on the table, and does whatever he wants based on his own ethical standards. Most money, most public good, whatever.

There's no possible way a prospective BUYER can be said to be morally unhinged.
1712  Other / Politics & Society / Re: WW2: California Sorry for Japanese American Camps - too little too late? on: March 18, 2020, 02:04:30 AM
I missed this excellent post. The analogies are valid and very good examples about modern day shoring up of support for right wing extremist ideologies coming from the present US administration and looking back at exactly what constituted an enemy by the then US administration during the time of world war two.

You are right, Mike the bank robber is as absurd an example as it can get but under the US administration of that era it was the policy they applied - they imprisoned all Mike's in essence.

Another country does in Pearl Harbor, kills thousands of US Citizens, declares war n the US, and is universally understood to be the enemy, but citizens of that country are not the enemy. Since a country is comprised of citizens, I think a lot of people might have a problem with that.

Most citizens are civilians, i.e. non-combatants. We are edging into Geneva Convention territory here.

A kamikaze pilot in a Japanese war plane howling down on a US ship is certainly the enemy.
But what about an 80 year old fisherman from Okinawa who just wants to catch fish to sell in the local market, and live quietly with his family?
What about a teenage pacifist from Kyoto who protests about his government attacking Pearl Harbor?
What about a nurse from Tokyo who twenty years previously emigrated to the US and married a Texan rancher, but never became an official US citizen?

You can't assign guilt to these people, or declare them a threat, just because the pilot was Japanese. That's racism.

In my country there have been attacks on Muslims because people think: Terrorist attack. Terrorists were Muslims. Therefore all Muslims are terrorists. It's the same thing.

To take it to the point of absurdity: imagine a situation where a man named Mike robs a bank. The answer isn't to imprison everyone in the country whose name is Mike.

Well, of course there'd be no need to imprison the Japanese citizens living in the USA. You could arrange to return them to Japan. But given that these people had been in the USA for 20+ years, maybe their alliegence to Japan was very weak.

War is about creating impossible choices and optimizing tragedy and suffering.

1714  Other / Politics & Society / Re: [ CONTRIBUTE YOUR IDEAS ] What to stock up during the outbreak? on: March 17, 2020, 12:17:39 AM
I've been thinking of going to the malls and groceries while its still functional. I would like to compile list of things that should be stocked up while this outbreak peaks.

Here are a list of things that I have in mind:

1. Food with Long Expiration Date: Canned Goods, Sacks of Rice, Cooking Oil
2. Water: If you don't have a 3 or 4 filtration system at home I think its best to stock up water while its not on shortage.
3. Bidet System: It could clean your butt better than wiping with tissue paper, but this requires a plumbing service to install (or you can DIY).
4. Thermometer: To keep track of your temperature.
5. Toothpastes, Shampoos, and Soaps: Stock these up for like 3-months so you won't have to go back to grocery just for these minor items
6. Garbage Bags, Tissues, Alcohol, Face Masks: For face masks, you don't really have to purchase the disposable one. You can buy a high-quality face mask that you can wash every night.
7. Contraceptives: I think its wise to stock these things if you don't have a plan to have a child when the virus outbreak blows over.

What else am I missing?

Beer.

1716  Other / Politics & Society / World War V: Man against Virus on: March 15, 2020, 01:44:09 PM
A unique and interesting thing is happening.

Armed by our current level of networking and phones, it's today a matter of choice whether to go to work or school or church, or do the same activities at home. In the past, there was no such choice. With world wide nearly instant communications, peoples' understanding is ahead of the spread of the co19 virus. In the past, people merely reacted much later, after the spread of the germ.

There are measures across the planet to contain, fight and neutralize the virus. This is the first coordinated, world wide war against a virus. But it will not be the last. Isn't it likely that in the future, when another SARS, or another swine flu or bird flu occurs, a very similar thing will happen?

Our new technologies enable effective responses.
1717  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Toilet paper hoarding on: March 14, 2020, 11:04:36 PM
wuhan had population of 11m
wuhan only had ~100k infections (under 1%)

of those affected runny poo was only a symptom of 5% of those infected

inshort
in a popular city, only 0.05% of people will need extra toilet roll compared to normal use

..
also over the 2 month period. the infection rate in wuhan is bottoming out,
meaning for one location its not like a year round problem. but something that can pass in a coupe months

individually people get over it usually in a week-1month depending on severity
yep those that got it early january and severe enough to need hospital, recovered and released by february

so in short
CALM THE HELL DOWN

Dude, if we did that....the news media would have nothing to go back to but Biden....

Fuck this country.  People are completely brainwashed into voting against their own interests.  I hope Trump wins in a landslide.
That's right. You tell everyone what their interests are cause they're too stupid to know right? Maybe you should also tell them what they can and can't say, what job they're allowed to work at and so on and so forth. Cause you would certainly know better than them what's best for them.
I hear there are thousands of jobs doing exactly that, at the likes of Fbook and Twitter.
