how does the noise compare to a 2 gpu miner?

The machine is really loud....it keeps making the sound: CHA-CHING CHA-CHING!

I have a 3 card rig that is quieter than the avalon, but i swapped out the fans on that rig. In my desktop I have 2 stock 6950s and the avalon is quieter than those. I'm going to put the Avalon in the garage, so ultimately noise won't be an issue...maybe heat will be once summer comes around.

also...compared to 2 BFL FPGA singles, I'd prefer the avalon sound. The singles have a high pitched noise while the avalon has a lower pitched noise.

Hey kaerf, can you measure PSU fan intake clearance? IE, the distance between the PSU fan grill and the back of the first module PCB?

The spacing actually tapers...it goes from ~ 1.25cm to 1cm.

That's just the top board clearance. Discounting the top board, it's about 2cm to the actual chips.

I actually have a single 240v socket in the garage, but that's being used for the dryer Sad

Seriously jealous now.

What's a realistic shipping date for someone making an order just now? I just don't want to gamble that much. If it's going to ship in 3-4 months time FSM knows where will difficulty be at that point...
I would suggest waiting until batch 2 customers start to receive theirs. It should give you an adequate idea of when Batch 3 users will get theirs.

The problem is CNY (Chinese New Year) was in the way of the first and second batch. So there is no real way to know how long it should take from ordering to having it in your hands.

If you wanna get on the train, you're gonna have to order when batch 3 opens no matter what.  You won't get another chance until batch 4.

Whether batch 2 will ship before then or not is anyone's guess.
Actually, if he gets his hands on an Icarus or whatever the other one was called, he can trade it in and skip the batch sequence. (In theory)

Problem is, I don't think Avalon is yet accepting the trade-ins so in essence...yeah, he will have to wait till batch 3. Or whenever they start accepting trade-ins I guess.

Here's a shot of the black fan. The sticker to the clear fan is covered.

Here are the connectors. The black fans have the black connector. The clear fan has the white connector.

Wow I thought this come with 5 total but now looking 2 black 1 white none on the 2 at rear not good. Looks like theirs room for the other connectors.

12V fan that's over kill on a fan no wonder its got a high watt use in total. I can see a lot of room for customizing and dropping that watt use down Smiley

Thanks for the pictures. One last question for now what PSU does it have with it and is this modulated or all stuck in a big pile.Huh..

Obviously Avalon Asics are not meant for mortal hands to touch.

It seemed like a good idea at the time.

While I like the answer Bowjob gave, I guess they don't want you to stain the machine

The machine comes with alu pannels that are wrapped on the outside with clear plastic, so there is really not much
to stain in the first place. Kind of like a sofa with a heavy-duty, clear vinyl furniture cover...

(I tried to get it off one machine but as the screws are screwed in after the cover was applied, it's not a simple case of just peeling
it off, one should release each screw first and then remove the plastic, then fasten the screws again. And the plastic is folded to the inside of the machine as well. I gave up after one machine and decided to put up the others with the plastic, I can remove them once BFL starts shipping in June ;-) Worst case it hardens out a bit)

Did anybody else bother to remove the clear plastic?

hi,

here are some info and advise.

about the gloves: one of our customer cut his hand when dis-assembling the machine. so we present a pair of gloves for all of you. please put it on when dis-assembling or carrying.

about the plastic sheets: please remove them BEFORE mining. we design the case as a part of heatsink, so remove the plastic sheets may help. no need for remove them clean and tidy.

about FAN change: DO NOT change the fans to a low speed model. will cause over heat. DO NOT install extra fans at the rear "fan socket". will cause PSU over heat and nearly useless for module cooling.

about install extra heat-sinks on each avalon chip: please do not do that. there is a air gap between the die and package top, install a heatsink on chip is useless. and will cause overheating. because  the top PCB copper act as a heatsink too. do not cover them.

about water cooling: yes, do it.

ng,

what about taking off one of the side panels and pointing a regular floor fan at it?

do you expect heating to be an issue?

will cause over heating.

we tested them under over 35 centigrade, it works fine. but a lower environment temp (ahead) will be better. this machine suck cool air from front and outgoing hot air from behind.

hi,

here are some info and advise.

about water cooling: yes, do it.

NG,

Question:
I am not familiar with water cooling other than for gaming machines that have pre-built kits.  How would you suggest I do it for these custom boxes?

Thank You,
Lauren
