Bitpop, there is an unmoderated ETC thread open. Will you continue with this thread or will you lock it in the near future? Maybe it is good to try the unmoderated thread for now and just reopen this thread when things get messy there. What do you think?

The heavy censoring of this thread has already done its damage.

Here is my humble opinion Smiley

  • PoS enrich the big accounts only....
  • PoW will become unsustainable...

I would love to see a new kind of PoW limited to CPU only so that everyone (no exception) could contribute to the growth of ETC.

CPU mining usually means botnets and it is rarely if ever feasible for the little guy.

Perhaps a mixture of both CPU & GPU, like BOINC (compute for good).

As for the botnets' risk, I would rather prefer to see some sneaky one running 2 dozen computers instead of few centralised monster miners ranking all the fees.

I think you're grossly underestimating botnets, but even assuming they're not a big risk - a decent mining CPU costs more than a decent mining GPU (~$100 gets you a used 280x, quite good for dagger) so the barrier of entry is actually lower with GPUs. And no, you won't make much with a single GPU but even less so with an old laptop or a tablet or some other comparably-priced device. Also GPUs can mine many different algos/coins (even dual-mine, e.g. Claymore) and generally have been quite consistently - albeit sometimes only marginally - profitable for the last 2+ years after The Great Scrypt Bubble of early 2014.

tl;dr: I have no idea why I'm arguing as I'm not even mining ETH/ETC now but I think dagger is the way to go for the time being.

The BBC are not popular in the UK at the mo.  Anyhow,

I mine some Groestlcoin on my rig/server.  They claim that their coin is just as efficient to mine with CPU as with GPU.
This old server here has a 2kw PSU.  It has 4 GPUs hooked up on risers,  the server PSU also feeds 2 scrypt ASICs.  With a geth node running as well  I  use affinity settings to throttle processing to only 3 cores of the CPU.  The remaining 5 CPU cores are dedicated to Groestlcoin mining.  The server also has 8 hard drive slots.  I am in the process of adding Burstcoin HHD (PoC) mining as well, but I need down time to move my OS from RAID5 striping over 3HHDs, to just one HHD volume.  I can then use 7 HHDs to mine Burst.  So I get to squeeze every last little drop of resource from this old beast.   The coin that could realise an algo that would work across all these resources would be very interesting.  Smiley

You are not arguing, at least I don't perceive your posts as such. Assuming dagger hashimoto is the way to go and since it's ASIC resistance, could the algorithm be rewritten in order to limit the amount of hashing power needed to operate, thus limiting it's use to home owners and not mining rigs?

And we should be glad that at least someone monitor this thread and remove insults and profanity. If that is what you mean by you "had posts deleted from" then we shouldn't worry at all. I've seen few insults been removed here and there and I totally agree with the mod taking such action.

Well, and eth still finish?
No, and with big security fail.
Now, devs working on etc to make a safe blockchain.
And eth unfinish too, forked, with hater users like u.
Your missing the point...this coin called etc is incomplete...so its is far from classic!

In order to enact a controversial DAO bailout, ETH hard forked off the original Ethereum chain.

The original chain is called Ethereum Classic (ETC).

Yes.

In Classic, unstoppable Code is actually the Law, because long-term integrity is more important than preventing short-term losses by introducing morally hazardous 3rd parties.

I don't know what ETH is good for now, but smart contracts are by definition out of the question.

A smart contract enforces a commitment without resorting to the threat of external litigation [2].

@iCEBREAKER - Ive watched your posts and you have some good wisdom and ideas here - you have experience which many if not most here do not unfortunately - but ignore the flack from @green whatever it is. As if their personal situation should guide the future of ETC? This community should pay you MUCH more attention.

Just for the record

This community member favours POS - yes straight out POS

I could live with SHA256/POS

Forget hybrid POW, continuing daggerhasi...fork once and get it right.

KISS principle - keep it simple STUPID

My suggestions
- POS has security and enables scale-ability (like 3sec blocks plus ETH version of Lightening Network - Raiden) - it also directly draws from ETH work which takes heat of the poor few ETC devs who will be going mad trying to keep up if there is significant divergence
- POW SHA256 will get mass adoption - and its nuts and bolts to swap (and its a world away from ETH) - the security provided by SHA256 adoption should not be underestimated.

Register this please - POS for ETC going forward - thats my vote. I don't care if you disagree - we will debate in detail further down the track when things are clearer.

Yes -  I am a miner (SHA256 and other algos - whatever that pays the best at the time) but I consider that the horizon is close to sunset on this infernal waste of resources to support a coin. Most miners do not have cheap/free power and most electricity is NOT surplus or sustainable. 5 years from now POW will be dead IMO unless China continues to prop up miners and centralise things further.

POS is the future IMO

PoW miners in China and everywhere else gravitate towards free surplus energy blah blah blah...OK enough of the scope creep.   Tongue

Turning the specific case of ETC into a general referendum on PoW vs PoS and every other pet issue around is the opposite of KISS.

Changing to a different pure PoW is highly controversial and a non-starter.

We have three potentially viable options.

In order of KISS to not-KISS:

1.  Merge whatever PoS ETH does.  Done.
2.  Defuse diff bomb and PoW forever.  Hope devs and economy are up to the Medium Difficulty task of coping with protocol/codebase drift.
3.  Charlie Hos' new hybrid.  Hope it works and is secure.  Hope devs and economy are up to the Highly Difficult challenge of coping with protocol/codebase drift.

Note these are not mutually exclusive propositions, resulting in ETC, Classic Classic, and ETC2, but only the first option minimizes effort duplication in regard to ETH.
