Bitmain and GMO will have to start manipulating the price upwards soon. We are getting close to the point $5,750 where an S9 doesn't even pay it's electricity costs (assuming 10c power), that will be killing their forward order book and bitmain have an IPO to sell.

I don't know, the SEC will decide on 9 ETF's within 2 months. We can see a $100-$500 dump from each delay.

Altough CBOE needs a $100b market cap in order to continue their futures market, they shorted every penny out of this.

I sat through a monetary policy and future-of-finance lecture a couple of months ago which touched on crypto.  The lecturer mostly knew his stuff on crypto but not in as much details as many of us here.

He spoke for a couple of minutes on why CBOE futures market meant that btc could never become a true currency since the market is always incentivised to go short, because market players don't have to hold actual btc to participate (I'm paraphrasing, probably quite badly - I wasn't taking notes).  I did quiz the guy on various parts of his presentation before time ran out and I was unable to question him on this particular issue.

Putting aside my poor memory of exactly what he said, does anyone have insight into what his reasoning may have been around this?

Interesting Strawbs, he might be saying futures undermines BTC by operating as a naked short.  Requiring no BTC in order to sell that market would mean the price is not limited in a normal way by supply and demand.     

The price is operating in a downward channel still.   If we want a proper rise, it must break upwards from here I think.  At present we have just touched both sides.   I mentioned before a possible break but also it would need to close out on a daily bar when in fact it reversed at that point and we got that latest wave of selling.  It was also about breaching the 50 day average.

So thats the target to beat right now, 6500 close above tommorow mostly I think and 6893 is 50 day. 8 day average is about 7000.     The recent selling could just relate to a recheck of support, its negative but only short term.  I'm hearing some positive projections but not decided on that myself until we close above this negative channel and prove it was just a short term ladder down, it only has to go sideways to do this really I dont ask much

If you knew an approval were imminent, and you had the means, wouldn't you strive to drive the price down as much as possible in the months preceding?

What effect might an ETF approval have on Bitcoin dominance? Legitimize the entire asset class or single out Bitcoin?

It's a shame this arcane ETF approval process has basically throttled speculation, but it has done wonders for separating innovation from chaff.
