Just came to post excerpts from an article about Elwar and saw the good news.

He can probably tell the story better than this. Its mainly about the seastead designer but helps shed some light on the situation.

It is quoted on the Ocean Builders Facebook page from what appears to be an online magazine called The Time (issue #20, 2019):

...In 2018, Koch first created his prototype: He got plans for oil rigs and built a miniature version of them: XLII, a cabin made of white fiberglass panels, six meters wide, including a vertical steel tube with weights to stabilize. Koch set sail in February 2019. He towed the structure to a location 27 nautical miles from the nearest port, where the sea is particularly calm and heavy storms have long been absent.

Perhaps Koch would have been able to work and experiment on the high seas for many years, but he made a grave mistake: he told other eccentrics. "It was an advantage that the platform was consistently inhabited," he says, and because he had to commute himself for the construction between land and platform, he invited two people from the Seasteading movement. The American Bitcoin millionaire Chad Elwartowski and his Thai friend Supranee Thepdet were to live as guests on the platform. "They wanted to live there," says the engineer Koch laconically.

However, the guests shot a number of YouTube videos on board. The Seaeading Institute published it ("The First People on the Sea"). The scene was electrified: two Utopians like themselves, making champagne-drinking steep announcements! Elwartowski and Thepdet proclaimed the end of the nation-states from their sea-platform. They are now free people. If they wanted, they could do anything, forbidden medical experiments, for example.

Koch was barely visible on the videos. "I never intended to be in the limelight," he says. In the middle of April, he and his guests went ashore to tow a ladder he had constructed to the platform. Friends contacted her by phone like this: Did you hear? The Thai Navy seizes your platform and you are threatened with the death penalty! "That's how it stood in the evening in the online media," says Koch. "We had already drunk a bottle of wine or two there." The stateless did not hesitate. They drove past a beachfront supermarket, loaded the yacht with drinking water and snacks, and set sail for Singapore.

Koch thinks he has done nothing wrong and invokes the law of the sea. He had assumed that he would not have to seek state approval out in the sea, in international waters more than twelve miles offshore. Koch had not yet considered how geopolitically contested the high seas are in Asia these days: China has begun all sorts of territorial dispute in recent years. For example, the Chinese have created artificially used military islands near the Spratly Islands, but other governments are protesting.

The legal situation is now somewhat unclear. Chad Elwartowski, for example, has lost his visa for Thailand. Rüdiger Koch has not yet received any official papers on the allegations against him. He knows that his platform was towed by the Navy "for evidence". An admiral of the Navy told the local press at the end of April that they had filed a complaint with the police. The Seasteader had violated the sovereignty of the country. It is life imprisonment or even the death penalty. Up to 200 nautical miles from the coast is a UN Convention, according to which a country has exclusive rights of use of the sea, even in international waters. A floating micronation in spe does not fit in there for the Thais.

Chad Elwartowski and Supranee Thepdet have gone underground. "In no case we say which country we are in," they declared at the beginning of the week. Rüdiger Koch is sitting in his hotel room, has written to the military attaché of the Thai embassy in Singapore and wants to negotiate with the government. Ideally, he says, he even wants his platform back.

Koch is downsizing the cause of ocean-going separatism and rocket launches these days. He was just a German engineer and entrepreneur. He wanted to bring investors to Thailand and promote tourism with floating platforms. "I'm sorry, I did not want to upset the Thais."

We are a society standing by passively as we become slaves to a system that is out to divide and exploit us. It is time that we realize that we may not be able to change the world into our liking until we understand that we must do it ourselves. The grubby politicians are not going to do it for us. They are captured by the system.

This is why I Bitcoin, freaks. It presents an opportunity to opt into a system completely separated from the corrupt system we currently live under. It swings a bit of leverage back to the individual who has felt helpless as he has watched the encroachment of an evil system creep further and further into his everyday life. Attempting to insert itself into every action and transaction on Earth.

Bitcoin is certainly not a panacea, but it is a step in the right direction. And if the US government is willing to rip a man out of a foreign embassy for a bit of old fashioned journalism (miss me with describing these actions as anything other than journalism, the act of bringing truth to light), we Bitcoiners better believe we won't be subject to similar treatment in the future. As we can see, the State does not like when you call out its wrongdoings or attempt to curb its power. Money is at the root of their power and we would be naive to believe they won't be threatened by Bitcoin too.

All the more reason to stop being complacent and act. Seize your sovereignty, educate people about the tools they can use to do the same, and hopefully, through action, we'll be able to get to a point where attacks on our liberties from the State are ephemeral. If we do not act, we may never be truly free.

Complacency kills. Wake the fuck up.
