No you will no downgraded there i no conditions on this SMerit is used to reward other members, it could increase by half once you receive it from others and decrease when you sent it. Merit doesn't decrease, it only increases so don't worry about it for the moment.

That explains why sometimes the rich are more deserving than the poor.. hahahahahaha O.k. dragonvslinux, just go out there and attempt to make good quality posts, go to threads that are interesting to you, read through the thread, ask interesting questions and have fun by engaging in the forum, and little by little you will likely earn some merits, which will cause you to also have some smerits in your bank. I know that forum policy does discourage hoarding of smerits, but perhaps you might want to attempt to earn something like 20 merits, and then you will have 10 smerits in your bank, and then whenever you earn more smerits, then spend them while attempting to maintain a 5-10 smerit reserve - each of us can create our own smerit banking policies in that regard (can you tell that I don't like the word, "hoarding", but instead prefer to refer to it as maintaining an smerit bank savings?).

Could you explain your question? What exactly is it about 2 week periods you find difficult to understand? and what about total time login?
That is not mentioned in the OP because it has no effect.

I'm not convinced your initial statement is true, I only wasted 1 smerit, I'll survive! That doesn't make me less deserving I've been making quality posts for sometime now, I don't have an issue overall with the merit system, my critique was just of hoarders. I prefer to just engage in discussions that interest me in an attempt to have some interesting conversation or learn something, I don't want to "go out there" and "earn some merits" as you put it. I don't think people should engage in the merit system like this personally. If discussions interest you you should engage because you want to, not because you're trying to earn merit. This attitude won't earn you merit either, or at least it shouldn't in my opinion. Holding 5-10 smerit reserve totally makes sense, as does holding even 5-10% as you never know when you want to merit something quite a lot as a matter of urgency or something. I was talking about the active members with over 100 or 1,000 that haven't given out any smerit. I can compile a list if this interests you more.

I'm not convinced your initial statement is true, I only wasted 1 smerit, I'll survive! That doesn't make me less deserving Right off the bat, it appears that in this portion of my comment, you are taking such comment way too personally and reading too much into an off-the-cuff observation that I am making.. that may or may not be true from your own personal perspective and experiences. I've been making quality posts for sometime now, I don't have an issue overall with the merit system, my critique was just of hoarders. I prefer to just engage in discussions that interest me in an attempt to have some interesting conversation or learn something, I don't want to "go out there" and "earn some merits" as you put it.
Go out there and earning merits gives you smerits to spend... so if you want smerits then you have to earn some merits. As you acknowledge, it remains optional regarding whether you want to earn merits or not (or even if you need to in order to have decent forum experiences), but if you want to have some smerits, the most likely way that you are going to be able to cause that to happen is by going out there and causing others to send merits to you. I don't think people should engage in the merit system like this personally. If discussions interest you you should engage because you want to, not because you're trying to earn merit. This attitude won't earn you merit either, or at least it shouldn't in my opinion.
To each their own, and I don't have any real beef with you, here. Likely the best way to earn merits and to be comfortable with yourself is just to participate in threads that are already of interest to you.. and if you provide decent post quality, it seems that sooner or later you are going to end up earning some merits.. whether you want them or not. By the way, I don't really need merits to rank up or anything like that, but it still does feel good to receive recognition on some idea(s) that I put time and effort into posting.. It can be considered like icing on the cake.. not necessary, but kind of like a bonus.
This merit system is still in its infancy stage, - only a bit more than a month old, and there are some members who likely have not given too much thought to it or even know what it is.. .So, it could take a bit of time for members to become cognizant of the system and how to use it. Even though we do not know exactly whether or how theymos is going to tweak this merit system, it seems likely that he is going to tweak it at various points in the future, and he even made such statements about tweaking.. including suggesting that he may consider ways to incentivize the spending of smerits by decaying them if not spent, even though simultaneously he seems to acknowledge that spending smerits remains a discretionary and subjective matter that he will allow as largely unpoliced.

Well this is good to hear that there will be some oversight, something like smerit decay would certainly take care of a lot of issues. In recent weeks theymos has not said very much about any of his assessments or reassessments of the merit system, but his whole approach to this merit matter has not gone without reflections about the various impacts on member posting activities. I don't think that theymos is very hot on the idea of merit decay, but it does remain in his thinking and here is the post where he mentions merit decay as a possible way to incentivize smerit spending.

It's still early days so I imagine it'll take some time to build up any reliable analysis or statistics regarding merit and smerit distribution. It'll be interesting to see how it all progresses though. With enough oversight, I think it could be beneficial.
