time = number of two-week periods in which you've posted since your registration

can you explain more about this?

Could you explain your question? What exactly is it about 2 week periods you find difficult to understand?

and what about total time login?

That is not mentioned in the OP because it has no effect.

If the timestamp is what you're asking then these are the same for everyone, It's on Tuesday (Each two weeks).

once i received merit and my rank is upgraded if i send full/partial smerit to other will my rank downgrade are there any conditions on that
No you will no downgraded there i no conditions on this  Smiley

SMerit is used to reward other members, it could increase by half once you receive it from others and decrease when you sent it.
Merit doesn't decrease, it only increases so don't worry about it for the moment.

How do you give/award SMerit? Is it the +Merit button on each post? I'll still not 100% getting it tbh.

Yes, just click +Merit Button and chose how many sMerit you would like to give.
You do not lose Merit when giving sMerit.

Thanks for explaining I tested it out Smiley Or wasted some depending on which way you look at it.
I realise it said it on the next page about SMerit and had just never seen that page before  Wink
Thanks anyway, enjoy your well deserved 1 point of smerit.

Thank you. I will make good use of it awarding good posts Wink

I hope you do, better than me at least! I'm already feeling like I wasted that one on a medicore post, no offence.
Could of just done a bit more reading and learnt that. You were awarded it due to my stupidity and laziness.
I got rid of the rest as I realized I couldn't trusted with it.

That explains why sometimes the rich are more deserving than the poor.. hahahahahaha

O.k.  dragonvslinux, just go out there and attempt to make good quality posts, go to threads that are interesting to you, read through the thread, ask interesting questions and have fun by engaging in the forum, and little by little you will likely earn some merits, which will cause you to also have some smerits in your bank.

I know that forum policy does discourage hoarding of smerits, but perhaps you might want to attempt to earn something like 20 merits, and then you will have 10 smerits in your bank, and then whenever you earn more smerits, then spend them while attempting to maintain a 5-10 smerit reserve - each of us can create our own smerit banking policies in that regard (can you tell that I don't like the word, "hoarding", but instead prefer to refer to it as maintaining an smerit bank savings?).

I'm not convinced your initial statement is true, I only wasted 1 smerit, I'll survive! That doesn't make me less deserving  Wink

I've been making quality posts for sometime now, I don't have an issue overall with the merit system, my critique was just of hoarders. I prefer to just engage in discussions that interest me in an attempt to have some interesting conversation or learn something, I don't want to "go out there" and "earn some merits" as you put it. I don't think people should engage in the merit system like this personally. If discussions interest you you should engage because you want to, not because you're trying to earn merit. This attitude won't earn you merit either, or at least it shouldn't in my opinion.

Holding 5-10 smerit reserve totally makes sense, as does holding even 5-10% as you never know when you want to merit something quite a lot as a matter of urgency or something. I was talking about the active members with over 100 or 1,000 that haven't given out any smerit. I can compile a list if this interests you more.

Right off the bat, it appears that in this portion of my comment, you are taking such comment way too personally and reading too much into an off-the-cuff observation that I am making.. that may or may not be true from your own personal perspective and experiences.

I've been making quality posts for sometime now, I don't have an issue overall with the merit system, my critique was just of hoarders. I prefer to just engage in discussions that interest me in an attempt to have some interesting conversation or learn something, I don't want to "go out there" and "earn some merits" as you put it.

Go out there and earning merits gives you smerits to spend... so if you want smerits then you have to earn some merits.

As you acknowledge, it remains optional regarding whether you want to earn merits or not (or even if you need to in order to have decent forum experiences), but if you want to have some smerits, the most likely way that you are going to be able to cause that to happen is by going out there and causing others to send merits to you.

I don't think people should engage in the merit system like this personally. If discussions interest you you should engage because you want to, not because you're trying to earn merit. This attitude won't earn you merit either, or at least it shouldn't in my opinion.

To each their own, and I don't have any real beef with you, here.  Likely the best way to earn merits and to be comfortable with yourself is just to participate in threads that are already of interest to you.. and if you provide decent post quality, it seems that sooner or later you are going to end up earning some merits.. whether you want them or not.

By the way, I don't really need merits to rank up or anything like that, but it still does feel good to receive recognition on some idea(s) that I put time and effort into posting.. It can be considered like icing on the cake.. not necessary, but kind of like a bonus.

This merit system is still in its infancy stage, - only a bit more than a month old, and there are some members who likely have not given too much thought to it or even know what it is.. .So, it could take a bit of time for members to become cognizant of the system and how to use it.

Even though we do not know exactly whether or how theymos is going to tweak this merit system, it seems likely that he is going to tweak it at various points in the future, and he even made such statements about tweaking.. including suggesting that he may consider ways to incentivize the spending of smerits by decaying them if not spent, even though simultaneously he seems to acknowledge that spending smerits remains a discretionary and subjective matter that he will allow as largely unpoliced.

Well this is good to hear that there will be some oversight, something like smerit decay would certainly take care of a lot of issues.

In recent weeks theymos has not said very much about any of his assessments or reassessments of the merit system, but his whole approach to this merit matter has not gone without reflections about the various impacts on member posting activities.

I don't think that theymos is very hot on the idea of merit decay, but it does remain in his thinking and here is the post where he mentions merit decay as a possible way to incentivize smerit spending.

This is good to hear, thanks for sharing that link. As you correctly guessed I hadn't read up on the merit system's implementation and reflections. It's good to read they exist!
It's still early days so I imagine it'll take some time to build up any reliable analysis or statistics regarding merit and smerit distribution.
It'll be interesting to see how it all progresses though. With enough oversight, I think it could be beneficial.

It is theymos fault, you should blame him for not banning all of you ico spammers.
Or maybe you just need to say Abracadabra so these shiny gold, hidden by theymos, pop out from the hat.
Or maybe you have to read the first lines in this topic where you posted your words...

You can upgrade to Copper member[1]. This is going to allow you to post images and also lift some restrictions in your your signatures.

Hey this is a great link. Thanks a lot. But the general hierarchy I don't see copper member. Is it higher than Jr. member? If an alt coin is giving bounty and only Jr. members and up can apply, can the copper member also apply?

No, Copper member is only an option that will allow you to post images, increase your daily private message and reduce the waiting time between each post.
You cannot get the next rank without the required activity (for members and more, you will need merit points too).

In addition to the main rankings, there are also sub-rankings that can be applied, and those are: Donator, and VIP.

The way activity is calculated:
The activity number is determined in this way:
time = number of two-week periods in which you've posted since your registration
activity = min(time * 14, posts)

Activity is updated every hour.

To become a Donator or a VIP, send a PM to theymos to get a unique donation address.

Took the liberty to update it according to the new Activity & new member limits/groups.
Edited with proper number of coins.
malevolent - update: added info about the new rank, changes to the Staff rank tag, removed the deprecated "SCAMMER" sub-rank. Also included info about the posting limits.

Signature restrictions

There are restrictions on signatures, based on your activity/rank.

- Newbie: No styling (including links) allowed. Max 50 characters.
- Jr. Member: Max 150 characters.
- Member: Links allowed. Unlimited length.
- Full: Color allowed.
- Sr. Member: Size allowed
- Hero: Background color allowed

Badges

I added a system of badges to SMF a while ago, though only two are defined now. Here are the current badges:

https://bitcointalk.org/Themes/custom1/images/badges/expert.png Bitcoin expertDev&Tech only. People with this badge know enough about the Bitcoin network to reimplement something very like it from scratch. They are capable of intelligently discussing the Bitcoin network: current protocol, possible attacks, proposed changes, etc. Criteria: Recommendation by an existing Bitcoin expert or core dev and approval by a forum administrator.
https://bitcointalk.org/Themes/custom1/images/badges/qt.png Bitcoin-Qt core developer Dev&Tech only. These are the core developers of Satoshi's Bitcoin client. They are listed here. Core developers are among the top contributors to Bitcoin-Qt, and they are all bitcoin experts, though they don't also get that badge.
https://bitcointalk.org/Themes/custom1/images/badges/hacker.png The Glider(hacker symbol) Awarded for people who have responsibly disclosed forum security flaws.

A core dev does not "outrank" a bitcoin expert (or vice-versa), and it's possible for someone without a badge to contribute meaningfully to a discussion with experts and core devs.

Limits on posting

Code:
waittime = 360;
if(activity >= 15)
        waittime = (int)(90 - activity);
if(activity >= 60)
        waittime=(int)(34.7586 - (0.0793103 * activity));
if(activity >= 100)
        waittime = max((int)(14-(activity/50)), 4);

Limits on PMs
I've adjusted the limits to make spamming more difficult.
