Weekend project, let's build a DNS system guys!
Here is what I propose, we encode HTML webpages in base64, the base64 is then truncated and sent. the transaction ID's are retrieved and a master file with the locations (and format) of the truncated html is formed. The masterfile is returned and can be used to access the data.
Multiple master files can be formed (due to 1k data limit) and put into one, etc... unlimited amounts of data could be stored this way.
If a dynamic webpage is needed an account could be created and reserved for "hosting" the latest message sent by this account could be the updated website data. Accounts could be used as domain names in a customized browser.
I already have the truncation programs written, but who wants to join me and make this work?
I have a 100k nxt budget for this project (can be increased).
PM me if you are interested.
That's not a dns system, that's a storage system. How would you then access the page? Via an alias that has some sort of list of message IDs?

What's the point? Uhh... This is a much needed feature that we can code with available resources and API calls. Project budget increased 150k NXT btw.

That's not a dns system, that's a storage system. How would you then access the page? Via an alias that has some sort of list of message IDs? API call to get recent transactions of an account, latest transaction = latest masterfile. This is better than DNS as you could potentially "host" dynamic webpages by updating only a few files on the masterfile.

Backup purposes? It's competing with Crashplan which offers unlimited storage for $59.99/year and similar competitors. Static website server? It's competing with thousands free hosting providers on the internet.

I don't understand how people still get excited over a new alt-coin that does not offer anything new. Apparently most people think "new" means simply switching the block time and hashing algo, and all of a sudden you have "innovation". Out of hundreds of cryptocurrencies, there are only a handful that actually offer anything new, and maxcoin is not one of them.
Although, I suppose if I had a huge collection of GPUs, I'd be excited to make $k's of cash every time a new coin came out so I could mine and dump immediately... a sobering reminder that most miners don't care if they are securing the network, only that they are lining their pockets.
Which does bring me to my point - we need to market to a slightly different demographic. Marketing to those already invest in PoW coins is an inefficient use of resources, because if they can't mine it, they are not interested. Of course there are always exceptions, but if the accusations of "nxt is pre-mined!" are any indicator, most of the complaints are in-fact from miners. I'm not saying we shouldn't try to convert those invested in bitcoin and clones (we should, and we already are with LTB), but they should not be our main focus.
We need to be attracting people who are actually interested in innovation and smart investments. This means our focus is not on the majority of the cryptocurrency crowd, but on tech and business oriented people (Forbes, IEEE, universities, etc). We just have to present NXT in a manner that is easy to understand and why it completely blows all other coins out of the water. Right now is not quite the right time, but when nexern releases his client (along with the AE), we should have a very simple to install client as well as be able to show off the power of decentralized exchanges. We should not market to raise the price of NXT, but market to recruit talent and smart investors that will contribute (and not just ride the wave) to the NXT ecosystem. The price will rise as a side effect of the cumulative contribution. NXT is the only cryptocurrency platform that allows an exponentially growing ecosystem due to BCNext's decentralized vision - the rest of the coins are limited to what their developers can put out - NXT is unlimited.

Good point. A lot of people just mine and dump.

If that's supposed to be the main point, it's called FreeNet and it's 14 years old. Just fork it. Also, this is backed by me... I have 2.6M NXT Wow, so rich. Can I touch you?

This sounds interesting. I have to think about some of the details of how it could work but it seems it could be used as an annonymized browser a la TOR. Have you seen this: www.mynxt.info/fwd?

As long as we keep bickering at people for proposing a plan and private funding, we'll get nowhere at all. Why not just ignore what you won't invest in and let him do it? The risk is his to take. It's a private proposal, so why not have him give it a go?

Giving it a go It's not like I could force him not to waste $7500 on reinventing the wheel even if I wanted to.

Basically what I'm reacting against the tendency to shoot things down before they even get going. That's fine for when community Nxt is at stake. It's weird when he wants to spend his own. Why take pot shots when it's clear you are not going to be involved in it?

You can notice I just asked "What's the point" but he couldn't explain. The only possible way it makes any sense would be something which allows decentralized (static) drug exchange, which would also need encryption, but then that's exactly what Freenet is, and many other projects.

We need audit of Crypto and Curve25519 classes.
Edit: Wait for critical bug disclosure to get it better. The bug is related to Crypto implementation. An audit would let to avoid the bug.
If we get an academic to agree to do the review, we might better give them the latest cleaned-up 0.7.x source. Nothing has changed in the Crypto classes, but overall it will be much easier to navigate the code. Good idea. How about contacting D. J. Bernstein himself to see if he can check the implementation http://cr.yp.to/djb.htmlHe designed curve25519 so no one would know better than him.
