Buying a young player for his position (even to have a good reserve) it will be very expensive if we are talking about a qualification comparable to Modric, so extending the contract for a year is beneficial for Real Madrid (I don’t think they will pay him a huge salary for this year) and Modric.
As for the speed, it falls much slower for players of this physique than for relatively "fat" players - a good example is Pepe. He is now 40 years old, but at the World Cup I did not notice that he was slow

In the end Modric is a good player, no reason to not keep him, even if they have to pay a lot, he is still a good player to keep, no matter how many young players you have, he is great.
