If Donaire can't keep up with Santiago, he won't surely can't keep up to the lower division and better just retire.

I totally agree with you. Donaire is now in the right division, and Inoue is giving them a chance to be a champ, so it's a good opportunity for Donaire to win again. He was once a champion in this division; it's just that Inoue took that from him. Now that Inoue is gone, it's time for him to come back.

Changing divisions is usually only good for young boxers. Donaire is not young; he is already old.

At 40 years old, his body will be having difficulty in coping up with the weight changes for sure.

I guess their camp already know Donaire's current situation and probably already acknowledge that if Donaire will not be successful versus Santiago, then a retirement will be his only option. You know, that is just sad because it's not a good exit for him but it is what it is. Well, in the positive side, Donaire's chances are greater than decent because this Santiago is not really a threat.

Nonito's manager is Rachel Donaire, so any slight chance in Nonito will be noticed by her as she is the wife after all. And I don't think that she is willing to his husband be punished and damage if she knows he can't pull that trigger anymore. And she is the biggest influence to Nonito, and I'm seeing that if Rachel tells Nonito to stop then obviously he will. Fortunately, Rachel believed his husband can make another run on the belt, in short she makes all the shots in Nonito's career. I don't want to gossip or something, but in the past, there were accusations against her by Nonito Sr, causing a severe relationships between the Donaire's. Anyhow, this is Donaire's last ticket, he is going to be the favorite in this fight. And a win undeniably will make Nonito a world champion and will have to defend his belt, and so it will be a per fight basis for him moving forward, whether to continue or hang his gloves for good.

If only Jason Moloney didn't back out of the supposed mandatory fight against Nonito Donaire for the vacant WBC Bantamweight title, he is the best opponent for Donaire to see if the 40 years old former champion can still dominate the bantamweight division now that Inoue is out of the list.

If Santiago will able to pull an upset against Donaire, then Donaire has no chance to beat other bantamweights.

Although I'm not looking at that upset possibility since in the very first place, Santiago was just being considered as the contender for the WBC Bantamweight title because boxers above him in rankings already have their respective fight schedule.

now that magsayo lost his recent fight, it is up to donaire to raise the flag of the PH again. this will be a good retirement reward if in case he will end up winning this fight. time to call it a day if he will be successful on this one. don't chase anymore belts as he is not getting any younger. enjoy the retirement and if he doesn't want to get out of this sports, he can be a coach to the younger filipino boxers.

Winning this fight will be a good exit for him for sure but that is if Nonito Donaire is indeed looking forward to hang his gloves and retire once the fight ends, most probably he will have an announcement after this fight to clarify his intentions to the sport and to settle the issue whether he will retire or not.

But considering that he will be the winner here and what he have said before, he might claim another title before hanging his gloves. It's really up to him.

It's going to be very difficult to retire though it he win this fight. Obviously, he will have to defend it, otherwise if he retire and vacant again, then it's a waste of time for him to fight. He has been blessed to have another shot at the belt and become the champion again. So I doubt that he will waste this kind of opportunity.

If he lost, then it's up to him and his camp to re-assess if he wants to continue or not. Specially in the circumstances like he is brutally knockout again or he was dominated in this fight.

For sure he wont really be retiring if ever he would really be getting the belt on such division because it would really be just impossible that no one would really be contesting out on getting those belts.

Therefore, there's still fights which would really be arranged it out and as long that Donaire do still have that firepower and will then for sure they wont really be considering on having that retirement anytime soon.
It is really just that people who do make out such decisions without even trying to look that Donaire could still pull off some good fights even if he's really that having the age.

It depends on the goals of Donaire at the time, if he just wants to prove that he still can be a champion despite his age, if he can get the win then retiring is not a bad option, very few people retire at the top of their sport and being able to walk away as a champion is one of dreams of many athletes, so it would not be a bad way to go, however to keep fighting professionally is not a bad option either, because as a champion Donaire should be able to earn even more money, especially if he targets other champions as well.

We are talking about opportunities here, so it's most likely that Donaire will not retire, as there are certainly more opportunities to come if he wins this fight and becomes a champion again. In his division, there are not many dominant fighters, or I should say there are no fighters that are too good for Donaire.

I like to believe that Donaire will continue his journey in boxing. Age is just a number, and winning is important. I'm sure he will take on challengers once he holds that belt again.

I think that's one of his goals to achieved here, to become another bantamweight world champion. Yes, it's not a bad option to retire if he wins this one, however, I'm not seeing him doing it. Donaire could be one of those legendary boxers that what to push their body  as long as they can.

We can't compare him to the likes of let's say Amir Khan, who really quit because he doesn't have the fire anymore. Donaire is different if we see how his career progresses. He still loves the challenges, and if he wins here, it will just push him mentally to fight again and defend that belt.

It's going to be a whole lot of speculations regarding Donaire's retirement or not. But one thing is for sure, it's inevitable, no one has defeated Father time, specially in a sports as brutal as boxing.

So let's just enjoy this fight, it will be his chance again as everyone said, another great opportunity to add to his already cemented legacy. And so if he wins he could be in the top 5 or top 3 best bantamweight in boxing history.

I'm leaning on the side that Nonito Donaire will still keep on fighting even after he is going to be declared as the winner of this fight, just an if for now of course.

I don't think that he will just give up his dreams and passion just like that because he still manage to be a champion at the age of 40. I think that is not their plan as they maintained their position at 118 despite the chance that he could've shrink at 115 just like what he mentioned after his loss against Inoue. But coincidently, the latter also announced weeks after that he will vacate his belts and that's where Donaire changed his mind because there's no one at 118 right now who poses as a threat to him.

When it comes to experience, I would say that Donaire would definitely dominate the ring, age might caught up to him, but, he would still find a way to show Santiago that he definitely deserved that title. But, if Donaire would be defeated, there is a higher chance that that would be his last battle, I think.

If Donaire would not retire after he is defeated, I think that it would have a hard time getting the title back as his.

Yes, that scenario is very much possible, but if this is going to be a close one, and Donaire losses it, then maybe we can a rematch. But if the fight is not even close and Donaire getting into the canvass and didn't win in the judges scorecard or getting knockout again, it's time for him to retire.

Because if he didn't then it might take some time for him to bounce (if there is no rematch), and by that time, he will be 40+ years old. And no way he can still fight as he might be just the stepping stone for this young fighters and we don't want to see that happen to Donaire.

retiring had been called for how many times in this thread yet Donaire team itself had not mentioned about this for long so I think let us not tackle this because it is far from the topic.

it is not about the title actually , for me this is how a true boxer do , to fight as long as they can (belt/title is just a bonus) so no matter or how long it would take? this boxer will fight till his knee stopped him from doing such.

I am one of those that wanted Donaire to hang it up over the years. There is nothing to prove in this division anyways. It could be financial that Donaire continued his career despite being past his prime. If Donaire wins, I doubt he will retire as his dream of becoming a 5 division world champion is still doable provided he can make the weight.

Boxing is one of my favorite sports but I am not really into black-and-white fight replays although I did watch a lot before. But Donaire could be a top 3 IMO. I always hear the name Eder Jofre as the GOAT of this division. I also ranked Donaire higher than Inoue in this division despite the latter becoming the only 4-belt undisputed. It's because Inoue had trouble against an old Donaire which means he would've been stopped if it was a prime Donaire that hurt him. Donaire also beat Cucholito Montiel whom I believe is better than all fighters Inoue beat at 118, except Donaire of course.

But if it's the latter where Donaire was defeated without a doubt, I bet that his wife, his personal manager would force him to retire even if Donaire still wanted to fight.

I don't expect a close fight on this one, and if Donaire loses, I don't think he will win the rematch, just like what happened against Inoue. Donaire is getting older, but he wants to prove that he can still win a championship. This is his first and only chance. If he loses, he may announce his retirement and enjoy life after boxing.

Has the schedule for this fight been announced yet? I think everyone is excited to witness a championship fight, especially since we have Donaire to support. He may be old, but the competition is not too strong in this division since Inoue moved up.

Here's the comparison of the two boxers, 40 years old vs 27 years old, huge age gap.

Given that the fight's outcome was close and Donaire was defeated, they should make the rematch on this very same year as every time goes

That's the big reason already for Donaire to retire if:

- the fight went close in favor of Santiago
- the fight went landslide in favor of Santiago

No need for rematch but rather hang the gloves. Santiago is not even on the contender list but was just given a chance for a title shot. Again, as I previously said, if Donaire can't keep up with Santiago, there's no way he can keep up now with those top-ranked boxers at 118.

Here's the comparison of the two boxers, 40 years old vs 27 years old, huge age gap.

https://box.live/fights/donaire-vs-santiago/

Statistically wise, Donaire has all the advantages over Santiago.

Some of these are height advantage, reach advantage, better KO percentage, much faster, much quicker, having a strong punch, good at counter-attack, versatile, agile, better footwork, and what else, much good looking, just kidding.

Santiago should not be a problem for a 40-year-old Donaire since Moloney, the supposed original match is even considered much tougher than Santiago.
