What happens when hard drives become ultra cheap in the future? Say there's a 4TB hard drive available for $50 in a few years. Will this hurt the price of SJCX over time?

More than hurting the price of Storj it will allow more people to be sharing their free HD space Wink

What about external drives? I have a few terabyte externals that I would love to use if its possible. I have my data up in two different places right now, but Storj seems really handy by being encrypted.

I was about to invest on Storj back in august, the concept looked totally cool for me, but then I totally forgot about it.
Missed a huge chance, good luck with your project!

i dont think you  missed it just yet.  provide a node in the network when it goes live and earn some coin.  and tell people who run document storage businesses about this as cheaper and better alternative to using a data center. Smiley

I don't think SJCX will be hurt if hard drive costs cheaper. SJCX reflects the value of Storj system - the decentralized cloud storage system, if Storj has 10k, 100k users(most of them share hard drive space), the price of SJCX won't be hurt but will be very expensive(0.001+ or even higher). At that time, we will spend less money/SJCX to pay more hard drive space.

The other similar case is bitcoin ASIC miner. (I am not sure this example is a decent argument or not) Does cheaper miners hurt BTC price? I remember in 2012, when there were no ASIC miners, btc was super cheap. In 2013-2014, lots of ASIC miners were shipped, many ppl worried about BTC price would go down. But btc had a huge price move from 60-200 USD to highest 1200 USD.

I don't see why not, but bare (internal) drives do tend to be cheaper.

People use Dropbox and the like for a reason, they want certain to be available even in the event of a computer crash or hard drive failure.  Cloud storage like Storj also allows retrieval from any devices which is really where computing is going.  If I work on a presentation on my laptop I may want to present it from my iPhone with my micro projector for the iPhone.   I think the fact that people will have more drive space, just means that they will have more files that they want to protect files.

Cheaper hard drive space does mean cheaper Storj drive space because more people will put space online through farming.  That is what the network wants.  The money that can be mad will undoubtedly be driven by market forces.  In the beginning there will likely be more drive space than consumption.  As it catches on that will change.  I think over time there will be one or more decentralized storage options and there will be an open market for the consumer.  that is good no matter how you look at it.

agreed. the increasing efficiency of our storage devices can only be mean growth for Storj.

There's no reason why they wouldn't work. But the transfer rates would be considerably slower, even on USB3.

When my family bought its first computer it had a 2 GB hdd at the time I couldn't fathom filling up 2 gigs of space, yes hard drives will get cheaper but data requirements also increase.

There is not too late for investors and users of storj network. The project is yet in their beta phase, but even after the release, there is so much to be done
with this open source platform.
Its future possibilities are limitless and far greater than our imagination!

I think security and cost are the key factors for small companies or startup to consider Storj a better alternative than anything else on the market right now.  So Storj should pay more attention to target this market.

For general users, free space on dropbox, google drive, one drive and etc. are probably more than enough.  For big companies, they generally use their own SAN or etc, and big corporate are slower to change their plan or adopt this new technology, even it is much better technology.

I think adoption of storj will come naturally in both the consumer and the corporate markets. Consumers are getting more and more concerned with protecting the privacy of their data, and are being reminded of the real price they pay for the "free" storage they are getting from dropbox etc. every time there is another breach of a corporate database.

Big companies´number one concern should also be the security of their databases, so they are likely to move away from centralized insecure storage services and into decentralized encrypted cloud storage as offered by Storj. The expected lower price point of Storj vs their present storage providers should also be a significant economic incentive for them to switch.

Storj is still going up, 2 days ago the total sell orders are 1.22 million SJCX, now is only 1.06 million SJCX. Most of 160k SJCX were active bought, it shows the strong buy will in the market. Yesterday big buy orders were filled, whales are full now, huge pump will happen in early 2015 Grin

I have a feeling that a lot of speculators will be let down after hoarding lots of Storj. After Test Group C, people who held Storj will be ready to take some profits and flood the market with cheap coins. This will actually benefit the second wave of early adopters as cheap coins roll in to write out early contracts for real users. But - I wouldn't gamble on the rate of SJCX climbing much higher until the product has been trialed by fire.

I think there's a bit of a self-regulating mechanism here - Storj is  a utility with a measurable value. For example, I would gladly pay $1 for 10 GB of redundant network storage for 1 year. When the Storj exchange goes live, I think the price of SJCX will tend toward the unit cost of the service provided. This isn't a bad thing at all - it could be beneficial for the value of Storj to be linked to a value that can be estimated with relative ease.

It is pretty hard to predict what will happen to the price of the coin (SJCX) after launch. We all tend to price the GB/year plans, it has been compared to Dropbox costs, Amazon costs, and so on. The truth is, there is a market out there, and price is driven, as always, by supply and demand. However, the implementation details are very important, too. For a solution with a nice GUI, that is easy to use, people will be willing to pay a decent price. If it is going to be hard for them to figure out how it all works.. then not so much.

I feel that Dropbox is popular not only because it fills a need (for online storage), but also because it is also easy to use, and it looks good.

How to setup hdd farming vith multiple hdds?
Should hdd be in raid mode, or single hdds?
If raid, would a server with storage arrays of hdds be the best way to go?
Interested in seting up rigs with as many hdds as possible.
Thnx in advance  Cool
raid drives aren't necessary for Storj as multiple copies of file chunks are stored (redundant).  bandwidth is your limiting factor, not read/write speed.
for controller, I've been testing this: http://www.provantage.com/highpoint-technologies-rocketraid2760a~7HPTI03W.htm
got about 87TB setup, testing and ready to go

Holy cripey...that is pretty hardcore.  I'm afraid I am probably only going to be able to use a 1TB external hard drive hooked up to my desktop.  It seems I am pretty outmatched...which is kind of fine.  I would like some more Storj but I am also more than satisfied with being apart of the tech...

On a side note, it is fun to read those kinds of posts...
