Back to 1M$ market cap, what's going on Storj?

How close is Storj to being ready to host decentralised storage-related applications?
http://blog.storj.io/post/118706366258/driveshare-test-group-b-plan

Appreciate the heads up, as I'm new to Storj forum. Realise you're going into a lot of unchartered new territory, so estimating can be difficult, but how long roughly do you think it is before Storj is ready, at least alpha or beta wise, to support decentralised applications?

We are approaching our Test Group B Beta in about 2 months. We believe that Test Group C will last less than expected as most of the requirements to go live will be tested starting in Group B.
But giving out an estimate is really hard, things may go wrong during Group B or even C and we may have to go back to the drawing board for some of the components.
So even a rough estimate is hard to give seen the delicate nature of software development where an issue could delay deadlines extensively.
Nevertheless the team is committed and hard at work to get to the launch as soon as we possibly can.

... lol give me a break..

Hey, no offense Smiley I'm only trying to get different points of view here after reading this from sia-thread
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1060294.msg11477225#msg11477225

I prefer solid objective knowledge but I guess it will allways be somewhat biased no matter who you ask.

My main concern is that their check for files is not deep enough and too long. Data from Test Group A should support this claim.

Their algorithms are good, but simply don't scale. Merkle based proofs are simply too much overhead. I expect files to be lost at some point, from any malicious attacker.

Will be keeping my eye on the network. There is definitely things we can learn from Sia.

New to this thread. I didn't buy in the "sale" but I have 10k Storj and some diskspace. Can anyone say when I can get going? I seem to remember hearing that beta could be open to holders of min. 10k Storj?  Smiley Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere.  Smiley

Thanks for the info.  Smiley If I buy a B address with 10000 Storj, do I ever get them back? Sorry if it's a dumb question but the info reads as if I buy and then depend on rewards after that and possibly not hold or get back the 10k Storj at any stage  Undecided

If you buy them, they are yours, you do need to spend them.  Wink

So if I use 10k Storj to get a Beta address, am I buying the address and "spending" my Storj or am I pledging the 10k Storj just for the duration of beta stage at which point I get them back?  Cheesy

Yes...  you are "spending" your 10k SJCX.

The point is to get them back...  and then some...  through your participation in the Test Group B!   Wink

Can't help you with the actual reward rates though...  the figures are not available yet.

Paying 10K SJCX to participate in the beta ? Are you being sarcastic ?

I just carefully read the blog post and now I have new questions..

If i'm buying a test group B address with 10K does it count as a balance in the farming address?
Quote
Rewards are directly proportional to the SJCX balance held in farming address.

If I buy an address with 10K and I only have 500GB space for farming, while others "contribute" 1TB after changing the scale, will I get a lower reward ?

Tell me where I can buy the mining address and where I can download the Drive Share software. I have looked but can't find the information I need. I have my Storj on CP and I'm ready to give it a go.  Cheesy

Sia has been under development for longer than Storj. Conceptually I've been working on it since about July 2013. Coding started in December 2013, but we had to throw the whole project away about 3 times before we understood what we were doing. We did a crowd fund in May 2014, which also predates Storj's crowd fund. Then we went under the radar for 12 months while we worked away at the codebase. Had to throw everything away again in October, but we've finally got something that's going to work up to something between 50k and 1m users. That's good enough for us to keep the current project, but we'll have to keep improving on it as we approach that 1m mark. I'm not really sure where the next optimizations are going to be, but as super3 keeps saying you basically have to move as much as possible off-chain. Blockchains simply don't scale. Even Bitcoin is going to give up past ~50 million users.

We'll figure something out when the time comes. We've got a lot of ambition and 1 million users is a good starting place. That would fund a lot of R&D at the very least.
