I'm a Monero holder but I've been reading about HD wallets lately and I'm wondering why tech like CryptoNote is necessary when HD wallets change the address every time they send or receive.
Even though it's new addresses you can still use taint analysis to trace back through change addresses to make connections to a user Random address from the recent transactions box: https://blockchain.info/taint/1Mub9qZnaNxFSkF3FB612C8CdHC3qWWMW7The goal is to avoid the ability to do that from my understanding Thanks, is there an example of how taint analysis works within the context of BTC change addresses?

I don't believe HD wallets are relevant to the privacy problem with Bitcoin. Even with simple wallets combining inputs from multiple addresses proves that a single person owned all the addresses included. Whatever marketing gimmick and fancy new wallet system they come up, it probably won't matter in the future if its not totally useless already. The blockchain is a public and permanent record of everyones transactions. Besides the fact that one would have to be 100% anonymous for each and every transaction, 100% of the time to remain untraceable, this means no space for any mistake in the past or in the far outreaching future for one using Bitcoin. If some agency wants to they will eventually connect the dots from enough public and private databases. Bitcoin was not made to be private, it is a nightmare waiting to happen. "But I'm smart and I never make mistakes--I'm even smarter than the future. No blockchain analysis ever gonna catch up with me"

Speaking of which--why isn't there a Monero $10,000 party listed? As ludicrous as it sounds, that's where we are heading. 10, 100 and 1000 USD parties. Even Bitcoin is not at 10K.

Anyone who has the skills to leave no trace of his crypto usage, can either:
a) not accomplish anything since no trace may be left; b) not stay under the radar due to he is so skilled that he's certainly on the list already.
Try another frontier. Such as questioning the legitimacy of the whole charade. Bruce Fenton said he went on offensive when a cop was trying to fill his ticket quota with him, making the cop admit that he's on the morally losing side, but needs to get his family fed. In this case, at the expense of another family of 6.

I agree with this concept. How much privacy do HD wallets really provide?

Every bitcoin wallet does use a new address for each transaction by default...however the user can override that by reusing a receiving address for multiple payments for example. HD wallet solves the problem of having to keep making backups of your wallet.dat, as there are only 100 addresses in your keypool until you need to make more. (at least in Bitcoin Core, I'm not very familiar with other wallets)

Can those addresses/transactions be linked to each other by examining the blockchain?

It is only a matter of time before they will accept XMR for the payment of tickets https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=955358.0

Anyone who believes he can keep perfect best-practices in security 100% of the time with bitcoin is deluding themselves. Using Monero will be part of best-practices.

Every bitcoin wallet does use a new address for each transaction by default.
Can those addresses/transactions be linked to each other by examining the blockchain? Yes. Let's say you have 10 BTC on an address and you make a payment of 1 BTC to someone. In the transaction, 1 BTC goes to the recipient address, while the remaining 9 BTC (minus any tx fee) goes to a new change address in your bitcoin wallet. It is easy for anyone to then trace what you do with your BTC and see how much you have, even if they don't necessarily know what it is being spent on.

lol guys - the forum is not that bad, this thread is much worse now, its too condensed and we are in unfriendly territory, I would lock this thread and suggest any further Monero topics to be discussed in the official forum only.
No, following those other coins and moving out of Bitcointalk would be the worst decision one can possibly make. I propose having a easy, sleek, and simple "official" website layout on Monero.cc that shows all relevant things then and there, like fundraising for (x),(x),(x), a basic overview of Monero's features and similarity to actual cash(Fungibility is a big +1), and a non custom forum similar to this one. Basically, that would be temporary, until actual guides and etc are added on. I found it's best to give the public something temporary and shiny to look at and use, until the perfected product comes out.

Until Monero gets really popular you really should avoid things like this... or you can always use a Bitcoin mixer and get in the same room as drug dealers and scammers. While things of that nature are usually looked down upon by contemporary society(Let's face it, everyone has watched porn at least once), it still and would help tremendously, after all it's just porn. The goal is to be as good as, if not the decentralized, innovative superior to traditional fiat cash, and that means the currency would and should get used for a multitude of reasons.

So, I believe we just need to collaborate to get some stuff done as a community, outside of the Core Devs. They are busy. What do we want to do?
Are we on slack? If not lets make one and start a brainstorming session. The topic should be development funds Edit - we are on slack - monerofoundation.slack.com Pm me your email for invites, i think there should not be a problem about privacy for a public foundation All I want is a way to pay for cam girls without my wife potentially finding out--is that too much to ask? Very soon you will be able to instantly pay anyone that accepts BTC using XMR. Your wife will never know, even if she is a blockchain forensic expert. I can't reveal the service but I've tried it and it works very well.
