...

I don't support ASICs on cryptonight nor arbitrary changes to this or that algorithm with no useful properties of its own but intended to give temporary advantage to GPU miners for some limited period after a switch.

Isn't that all of the modifications to cryptonight so far in a nutshell?

So far, yes it is.

@smooth. What is your position on the proposal?

I'm neutral and I will support either continuing to tag along with Monero's anti-ASIC strategy or ASIC-friendly and low-overhead algorithm such as SHA-3.

However, in your own personal position, what would be the best way forward for Aeon's growth as a secure and usable cryptocoin to compete in acceptance and payments versus bigger coins like litecoin?

I reckon, personally, we might have stayed in the no Asics strategy long enough.

Yes and no. Monero's stated policy is to tweak the algorithm to break existing ASICs and deter new new ones, which would fit within what I said, in doing little other than creating a temporary advantage. I don't think that's a good approach for AEON in part because the frequent forks are a burden on limited developer resources, more likely to result in a screwup due to limited resources, fewer eyeballs on the code, etc.

The first tweak (variant 1) did only that, and did not even attempt to improve the ASIC-resistance in any fundamental way. The second and third (third being CN-R) tweaks actually attempt to improve ASIC-resistance to some degree and by some accounts (not really confirmed nor confirmable) have reduced the ASIC advantage, though not enough. RandomX attempt to reduce the advantage drastically and reduce the need for frequent forking. I do not know if it would or will be successful.

@smooth. I reckon Monero's stated policy is not a practical one. The threat of Monero's policy to tweak the mining algorithm did not stop new Asics from being produced or from the miners tweaking their Asics to work on the tweaked algorithm.

I reckon it might never end. How can a cryptocoin grow if it was not stable in that side of its development?

I reckon you missed the whole idea of stoffu's argument in his proposal. This is what he said and you should post this in your state of Aeon article.

There is no such thing as ASIC resistant PoW.

Whether someone creates an ASIC or not is not determined by how technologically difficult it is to do so, but how economically sensible it is to do so; i.e., when a coin gets more adopted and the price rises, ASICs will appear no matter what.

@estenity. That is why stoffu made his proposal. However, there are some people in the Aeon community who are clearly making it appear the problem is entirely something else.

The writers of State of Aeon might be trying to avoid the real issue hehehe. Read what they wrote, these are not stoffu's reasons. I shake my head at this.

Allow Aeon to stand out from the rest of the CN community by being the first Cryptonight Light coin to use SHA3.

Allow Aeon to move away from its close following of Monero to give itself a unique existence.

Allow a test base for CN protocols on SHA3 for possible future integration of other CN projects.

Possibly increased interest of developers in the Aeon project.

Allow for possible value increase due to increased notoriety of the project.

The project seems one of a kind and i think can show tremendous growth in future. Looking at the previous works of the company and the current clients, i have to say that the team of the project is very hardworking and dedicated

FYI, the real issue is ASICS not being embraced because they have shown time and time again to not be fair on the network with those unable to obtain them. If you do not believe that any of the above comments are fair judgement for a possible outcome of a change to SHA3, maybe you missed the real issue the project currently faces.

There is no Asic resistant mining algorithm is the issue. It has always been the issue and stoffu is bringing this issue into broader discussion with his proposal to embrace Asics. However, it appears you are ignorant of this issue or try to make it appear that stoffu is only arguing for it for shallower reasons.

However, are the Asics that keep coming back on whatever algorithm Aeon changes to easily obtained by the miners? Do you think it will stop after another hard fork?
