While we are waiting for 0.9, there are 2 new betas available. Always treat betas with caution (not recommended to use for funds, just testing) and make sure to upgrade once the official binaries are released!

Windows 32-bit from hyc, the guy from LMDB (https://github.com/hyc):

Quote
<hyc> for anyone who wants it, my unofficial build for win32 http://highlandsun.com/hyc/monero.win32.v0-9-beta.zip
<hyc> built from current master
<hyc> sha1sum a1dc27be4e21450207db80d9859a0556355c83cd

Windows 64-bit from fluffypony:

Quote

Again, make sure to upgrade once 0.9 is released!

P.S. Both links were posted in #monero @ freenode.

Every time a block is mined, a certain amount of BTC (called the subsidy) is created out of thin air and given to the miner. The subsidy halves every four years and will reach 0 in about 130 years.

There is a problem with this build (called Beta 3). Beta 2 (build November 01) loads block chain at C:\Users\<user-name>\AppData\Roaming\bitmonero. Beta 3 loads block chain at C:\ProgramData\bitmonero

i don't expect squat (re price) with then new release unless their are those that "invest" based on "performance" of a core team.

i mean, really, besides the ability of the network to perform its primary function, there is the ability of the network to perform that function in a secure fashion. 0.9 will allow many more nodes to come online... we've all witnessed newcomers to the scene be like "yo i downloaded this thing on the website and wtf". So 0,9 will make that whole situation somewhat better.

but as was eluded to in that fast talkin bitcoin podcast, its all about network security. And our hashrate just doesn't cut it yet. What cuts it? I have no idea. As a supporter, you can do many things:

1. run a solo node and mine on it
2. build up massive mining infrastructure
3. keep the price high

the current evolution of crypto allows #3 to work in some extent to address the overarching problem - lack of net hash. If monero was worth 10$ at current emission, what would the net hash be? so many cloud services would be burned keeping it up. But thats not what we want. We want a natural net hash. We want organic. Home grown. A real network of contributors. A real network of miners with dedicated rigs.

Yes it has been posited that we're just not there yet to justify high net hash..... but when? when the emission curve is bollux?

#1 is a very easy thing to do. Any believer in Monero should absolutely start solo mining today to support the network regardless of profitability. If your profitabilty calculations (based on your equipment and electricity costs) tell you it is more "efficient to just buy on the exchange then buy on the exchange AND mine Monero. It is the right thing to do and essential to network security

I'd add that even if profitability of mining works out that it is cheaper to buy, for the specific case of just running one solo mining node, the difference is going to be very, very small in absolute terms. No one is suggesting to go out and build a farm at significant expense if the profitability isn't there, but solo mining on one computer is a small price to pay to help support the network and the coin.

OK OK OK  As they say, you are either part of the problem or part of the solution. Smiley

I have started my node again and am solo mining.  Instead of using both cores I am now mining with only one.  The second core doesn't increase the HR by 100% but only 30% and using one core enables me to do anything else I want with my supercomputer while getting 25 H/s.  Grin  When using the standalone miner on a pool the second core gives me a 50% increase.

I'll go out on a limb and speculate that 0.9 will not be released this year.

That is perfect. Or even part time (just mine when you aren't using the computer). Every little bit helps. Also, ask your friends to do the same.

Crosspost:

    Hydrogen Helix
    https://github.com/monero-project/bitmonero/releases/tag/v0.9.0

    Overview
Too much to describe. Represents a major release in Monero's history, over a year-and-a-half in the making.

    Some highlights
    - moved from in-RAM database to a backend-agnostic blockchain database
    - created an LMDB blockchainDB implementation (with the help of Howard Chu, the creator of LMDB)
    - created a BerkeleyDB blockchainDB implementation
    - created an OS-agnostic raw blockchain format
    - built tools to convert between blockchain implementations, as well as import and export them
    - added ARM support
    - brought back 32-bit support (WIP)
    - added QoS (bandwidth control)
    - added OpenAlias support
    - fixed all (previously broken) unit tests and core tests
    - implemented daemonize for proper backgrounding of the Monero daemon
    - drastically increased sync speed
    - included block headers in the source
    - designed and implemented a stealth payment ID scheme
    - designed and implemented a unified address+payment ID scheme
    - implemented a hard fork mechanism
    - changed the block time to 2 minutes
    - implemented the MRL-0001 and MRL-0004 recommendations
    - added tons of simplewallet / rpcwallet / daemon commands
    - added a dust handler to simplewallet
    - created a multilanguage mechanism, implemented in simplewallet
    - bug fixes, bug fixes, bug fixes
    - completely overhauled the CMake (with the help of Kitware, the creators of CMake)
    - added a bad peer auto-banning mechanism
    - refactored a ton of code, added a ton of comments
    - added a core crypto implementation based on SUPERCOP ref10
    - switched to a triangular distribution for output selection
    - added multiple new mnemonic wordlists, including Russian and Italian
    - created a "trusted daemon" system for remote daemon use[/li][/list]

In total this represents 922 commits worth of work by 9 contributors. This will probably be the biggest release in Monero's history, everything from here on out can be done as faster point releases.

    Updating: Blockchain Conversion
It is highly recommended that you delete the contents of your Monero working directory and sync from scratch. This directory can be found in ~/.bitmonero on Linux and OS X, and on Windows in \Users\username\AppData\Roaming\bitmonero or \ProgramData\bitmonero.

Syncing from scratch is EXTREMELY fast in this version, pretty much at bittorrent speeds, and will leave you with a fully verified blockchain.

Alternatively: if you want to grab the bootstrap (NOTE: there is a new bootstrap format!) off the website then you can get it at https://downloads.getmonero.org/blockchain.raw - once downloaded you can import it with blockchain_import --input-file /path/to/your/download.raw. If you're particularly brave you can pass the --verify 0 flag to skip verification during import.

If you REALLY want to convert your old blockchain: you can either use the blockchain_converter tool, or you can use blockchain_export to create a blockchain.raw, followed by blockchain_import to import it into the new LMDB format.

Year 2016 will be the year of truth in my calculations.
Monero should start rising this year since the emission is now getting to such ridiculous lows. If it will not start rising finally this year, probably it will never do so (at least chances get slimmer).

Personally I am not buying right now. I have plenty of coins waiting if 2016 will bring us anything exciting pricewise.
So far the price chart of Monero has been pretty depressing (going down from 0.004 in 2014 to 0.001'sh late 2015).

Kind of controversial: if there are developments done, the price should rise, not fall. But, the only fundamental that plays in crypto is the equilibrium of the intermation of supply and demand curves.
There need to be more demand than supply (= emission + sales from early adopters) so that the price can rise.

It just show that release date had not come out.  Price was decreasing last months altho sort beta 0.9 release was long time out. None out of core team knew and expected it will happen today.
Price of Monero decreased from 0.0015 to 0.001 BTC in  2015. I doubt at end of 2016 will be only as high as it was in beginning of 2015 but much higher. Most possibly Monero will be coin that will gain most in 2016 out of top20 by capitalizations coins.

Hydrogen Helix is real start of Monero. Monero ended qualifications and set ready on start of crypto race.

Wow, nice! This is nice starting out my new year reading about the release! When I get home Ill be sure to start setting up the new rig set up. This is definitely going to be an exciting year for monero I believe, but not anything astronomical. I mean technically were still in the 2010/2011 phase in terms of Bitcoin, and believe we will see a similar pattern on adoption now that we have made everything official with helix.

Yes I agree. Monero at this point is very much like Bitcoin in late 2010 / early 2011. Helix is laying the foundation for a lot more exciting things with Monero.

Concerned that blockchain bloat will lead to centralization? Storing less than 4 GB of data once required the budget of a superpower and a warehouse full of punched cards. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/87/IBM_card_storage.NARA.jpg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punched_card

As predicted, XMR is now rising, with an upside breakout from the downward trendline.  Thanks to our hero Monero developers who were busy writing code during the holidays and released version 0.9.0 while everyone was asleep/drunk on New Year's Cheesy
