Now 50 cents. But the xmr/usd volume on polo is huge now. double that for litecoin.

I could be totally off, but it seems like someone is controlling the USD price of Monero.

It's not just XMR. So many alts are in the general neighborhood of -40% over the past 30 days which translates to constant USD price, and they have tracked BTC as it has rallied. People trading these alts seem to believe that they shouldn't participate in BTC's fiat price gains at this stage. Maybe it will need BTC's higher prices to be sustained and not turn out to be a short-lived bubble.

The main exception as a subset seems to be the 'BTC-E alts' (LTC, NMC, PPC) which are down less (so up in fiat terms)

I think the fact that counterparty, nxt, monero and namecoin have all gone unavailable on shapeshift since the bitcoin price has skyrocketed is a good indication of an increase in price once the dust settles a little

Also unavailable are Gemz, Swarm, BitCrystals, Ripple, bitshares, and Stellar
so whatever

They were all unavailable before this current rise in price.  The others are indicative of a significant increase in trade volume

Nah. If btc is going up, xmr price in btc will go down. But, at the same time, xmr price and volume in usd is considerably going up. I guess that this is because of new crypto users, trying to buy some "afortable" crypto currencies with a potential of  growh.

Monero USD is doing well because BTC is rallying
https://www.coingecko.com/en/price_charts/monero/usd

But when we look in terms of BTC, it is not so pleasant hmmm

If you think holding up is losing 50% of its value against btc , which lets face it, is how most people bought into XMR and how most people will likely cash out then I'm confused.

imo holding a $ value is scant compensation while missing out on double gains. (inb4 everyone says that double gains is nothing when XMR is going to do 100x)

Sure it's an oppurtunity to buy more cheap but if there's anything this btc rally has shown is that alts in general are starting to become less and less relevant.

There are so few people now holding XMR and in particular the ones holding the very large bags that aren't underwater right now.

I've gotten the impression it's a common belief that when BTC rally subsides the alts will bounce up hard as people will start looking other means to increase their wealth.

Common belief yeah but past performance is no indicator etc etc.

Look at LTC, that's held its value.

Also, when will BTC rally subside?

$10k? That would make XMR 0.0000x ? I wouldn't like to be holding it down there and cheering about $ value conservation.

If you see value in BTC terms that may be so. But the double gains you speak of are a short term phenomenon. Play the long game.

Sure but while btc rallies if its so obvious alts slump until the end of the rally why would you hold them when you can by two or three times more of the alt later, before these mythical 100x+ gains.

Dont forget the long game for most alts is having a high probability of failure.

I can see your point, but wouldn't dare to sell my alt-stash now to get into BTC... it's way too parabolic again, parabola always end in tears... If I buy BTC now, sure, it might double, but will I have the courage to sell at the top, or will I be to greedy? Will I wait till everybody wants to leave and the whole house collapses again to the USD300's...

Just like Bitcoin before, I'm in Monero for the long game, I can see the great underlying value, although it's still very speculative... But I won't part from my monero's now, to buy into a new parabolic BTC-bubble...

best regards
