I was helping some my friends get the miners tuned in the pool, and I just noticed "Kano" and "ckolivas" in the pool stats.
Since joining the pool last Dec, it never cross my mind to check.
Kano with 3.97THs and ck with 3.38THs .... I wonder what miner HW are they using? Avalons? Test miners?
Me: Avalon A6 since last Dec - it was 2 until I blew a board on one of them a couple of weeks ago and haven't got around to running it as a half A6 yet -- I've created a dk.kano.is node, in EU, like the de.kano.is node. Consider it a test replacement for de.kano.is but I'll run both for probably at least a couple of weeks to see how they compare in reliability. It is, however, another ~20ms further away from the main pool node in Vegas If you wish to try it, just replace 'de.kano.is' with 'dk.kano.is' Since they are both relatively close, you could make one the primary and the 2nd one your first backup. Anyway, the point is of course to replace the de node, since linode isn't reliable enough, and we'll see how dk compares to de. What does those 20ms longer away from main server means in practice ? Yeah basically as Phil was saying, it's another 20ms longer in the risk of an orphan race. 20ms is nothing really though, since a block is on average around every 600s and adding another 20ms is basically not much of an issue due to our fast block propagation times. The DE node network down times and mtr errors I see, are what I'm trying to reduce, so adding only another 20ms seems like an acceptable trade off if it does indeed increase 'EU' reliability. We'll see how that fares over the next few weeks. Also, yes it is with the provider you suggested, but I had to get them to change things around to a different configuration, since their current standard setup is lacking at the hardware level, which they will hopefully upgrade soon.

Block by dsppage with 124THs! That would be his 5th Kano Block! To add to that, same S7 as the block on Saturday it found. 3 blocks in 3 days with 120th. Unbelievable 893B share also! congrats dsppage.... this SS7H is a winner..... you should put it to work at solo.ckpool.org - maybe 25 real coins for you if 3rd time lucky!

Well it would have to be 4th time lucky, it found a block on 12/31, so thats 3 for this miner. Can it find a 4th?

Had to do the same with my hosting provider...I run a private mail server (no, not for HRC ) and due to legit traffic had to reconfigure their hw to accommodate what they weren't expecting from a little tropical island in the Pacific...

The pool is fine the way it is. Paying a premium to the person who finds a block to dissuade block withholding is essentially paying a bribe - like paying "the mob" "insurance money" to make sure nothing bad happens to your store (no offense - I appreciate that you're offering ideas). Kano does multiple checks and statistics to stay on top of this - I trust his skills and efforts. Now, how about another block? I need some green Just like you get paid for valid shares (which prove you did some work), paying the person who finds the block is the exact same thing same thing (but much more valid). You can call it paying the mob (however, I am not sure how that is simular), I call it rewarding behavior that you want. Isn't that how the world works? I am not sure how rewarding good behavior is like paying the mob, you must know some really nice mobsters Anyways, I never said to change this pool (I even explicitly said not to change this pool, but it would be a cool second option). The problem with checks and stats is you need large numbers for that to work. If one guy mines and has been paid say 50 BTC, but hasn't found a block, how statistically significant is that? That should naturally happen 1/4 of the time, it isn't statistically significant until you pay out hundreds of BTC and only later could you realize there is a problem. Like I said, I don't want to change this pool, but it could be a good hybrid between solo and pooled mining. Personally, something like a 80/20 options is more appealing to me than the current system or solo mining. I realize others might not be in the same situation. All I am trying to do is find the system that is least likely to be attacked, while retaining the advantages of pooled mining. In the past, this pool has had great luck, I would like for it to be in the best possible position it can be in.

On PPLNS you already lose when you withhold. The bigger your hash rate, the more you will lose.
The simple issue is the question: Why would someone withhold?
... block ...

... and to say a little more of my post above that got interrupted by a block Making them lose a bit more wont really make a difference to anyone withholding. Paying everyone fairly is way more important. ... in my book 'fairly' means based on your work done vs the rest of the pool. I expend effort and time to track miner problems, and in my opinion that is what's best. -- The real issue is actually chickens. I ate chicken for dinner just before we found that last block. More chicken sacrifices required -- Edit: oh and I know who the new top miner is, so as I guessed before, it is all hardware and no they wont ever be withholding.
