I have the 860watt version of this PSU in my computer, it's "probably the best psu ever" according to anandtech: http://www.anandtech.com/show/5464/seasonic-platinum-series-860w

Since I need to have my computer on to mine I will use the computers power supply to power the bASIC's of course, but I would need really long molex power cables (want to have boards around 1.5meter from computer), any ideas where they sell meter long of those or I need to make them myself?

I don't know that (you could really easly do that yourself, just be sure you take great cables).

A sidenote: tension decreases with the distances of the wire. So if you have a 10 meter long wire and you start at 12V, you might arrive at 11V at the other side. I would be sure that i did it right before risking to damage Xk$ of mining device.

finding one will be a miracle, it is intended to be an internal connector. You should be able to get the connectors pretty easily since they have been standard in industrial and computer equipment for 40+ years.

Tension=voltage?

Resistance increases as you go to a smaller wire (higher gauge) as well, so be sure to keep those lines nice and fat since they will be carrying 100W DC.

Tension is another word for voltage. Over a meter the resistance shouldn't be a huge issue. Even with 18 gauge wire you'll only have 0.21V of drop with 10A of current.

If you have a soldering iron or station, just take a cable with both ends, cut it in half, and solder a length of 14 gauge between them.

Yeah, I read somewhere that the limit on IDE cables is 43cm or something. Ill just pick the best cables and measure the cable voltage drop before I try it. For my needs I only need 1-1.5meter cable.

EDIT: Thanks for info MrTeal, my brother is an electrician of some type so he's knowledge will help.

Resistance increases as you go to a smaller wire (higher gauge) as well, so be sure to keep those lines nice and fat since they will be carrying 100W DC.

100W at 12V makes for a load current of 8.333A.

If you use 18 AWG copper wire, on a 1 meter run, you would see a resistive loss of about 0.349V from the wire (that counts the loss from both the positive and negative wires, 2 meters of wire total to make a complete circuit).  A 2 meter run would be double the loss, etc.

The connectors may also introduce some loss.

Edit: If you're using 4-pin molex, and both of the negative wires are connected at both ends, the loss from the negative side would be cut in half, from using 2 wires instead of 1.  So 0.262V for a 1 meter run.

I base my numbers on this data: http://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm

I would hope the bASIC units have nice on-board regulators that can deal with a bit of variation in the input voltage.

These high end seasonics have modular plugs and a single rail -12v.  Buy a smallish spool of "lamp wire" that's 16 awg and some barrel connectors at your DIY shop of choice.  Order a 10 pack or whatever needed of barrel connectors with wiring from digikey for super cheap.  Cut the <= 18 awg sides short to reduce loss and clamp it all together.  Benefit of using all of the available -12v w/o use and added cost of any adapters.

The office is setup for manufacturing firmware loading, testing, and shipping his asics products. Hard to assemble load, test, and ship products if you dont have space and equipment.

Corrected your statement with strikethroughs and italics.  Here are the excerpts from cablepair's post:

Yes we are going to get hit by Hurricane Sandy, they are telling us it will hit here later tonight - mostly high winds, downed power lines - outages and some flooding, nothing too serious. It wont cause any kinds of delays with bASIC - they are designed in CA, and assembled in OR, so do not worry about that.

things are just so hectic right now and I need to be able to focus on the logistics and planning required to get 800+ boards loaded, tested and shipped

A buddy of mine informed me that dc adapters aren't standardized, etc etc, so they could potentially mess up the bASIC.

Cablepair, will you be including an appropriately matched dc adapter? If not, can you provide a link to purchase one which is guaranteed to work appropriately with the bASIC?

yes dc adapters come in all shapes and sizes - the barrel jack connector we are using is about the most common size available - as far as I know you just need 12v but I will make sure the engineers give me exact specs of the ideal adapter - but when in doubt use molex.

If you run out of molex connectors on your PSU you can always use the sata to molex adapter we sell on our website.

The one thing to watch out for is that not every power supply is center positive. Center negative is rare, but you have to watch for it if you're just grabbing one off the shelf. Some companies use it as a cheap way to force people to buy their branded wall adapters.

What's the input voltage range of the onboard regulator? Could we use a standard 19V laptop supply in place of 12V?

Thanks for your reply. I'd use molex but I'm going to try to host the bASIC on an RPI, so I won't have a PSU nearby.
My friend was referring to "wrong polarity / wrong voltage / wrong whatever else" as being a potential danger, rather than the actual physical connector shape/size.
